Game Format and Rules

In the first half of the game, contestants have to collect four keys

Game Format
Each show a team of five friends visit the Fort with the aim of winning Boyard's gold. The gold falls into a dome situated in the Treasure Room, from which the team collects as much as they can in two minutes. However, there are several things standing in their way: firstly, the Treasure Room is guarded by tigers; secondly, the Treasure Room doors needs four keys before it will open; and thirdly, for the gold to be released, a code word has to be spelt out on the giant letter grid situated on the treasure room floor. The team has forty minutes to overcome these obstacles, which starts on the first strike of the gong.

The team gains keys by playing games in the cells of the Fort, and by answering riddles set by the Professor up in the Watch Tower. These are known as Key Games. Each game must be completed in a set time. Once they have enough keys, the tigers may be caged and the Treasure Room door opens for two minutes. However, before the door opens, the team need to play the second half of the programme.

Collecting the Gold

After gaining the four keys, the team places them in the locks above the Treasure Room door, and sets out to discover the code word. This is done by playing daunting challenges in which they receive clues if they are successful, and by answering more riddles. These clues all make common phrases with the same word (the code word). After the second gong the treasure room door opens and the team has to spell out the code word correctly on the word grid by standing on the correct letters (cannonballs can be used if there aren't enough people). If the word is correct, then Boyard's gold is released. They then collect as much as they can and run back and forth from a pot outside the treasure room where they deposit their gold. After the two minutes is up, the door begins to close and the team must escape before the tigers are released.

What happens when the team run out of time in the games?
In the key games, the team member must be out of the Fort cell before time runs out. If they are still in the room, they are taken away as prisoners and are locked in the cages situated in the centre of the Fort. They are released for the second half of the game. In the clue games when time is up the game is over, and the clue word usually sets on fire, however there are no lock-ins or penalties.

The Fort Jail

What happens if the team don't have enough keys?
If the team need another key, then outside the treasure room one contender has to climb down a hole, L'Oubliette, in which they are locked in. At the bottom they find a key which they pass up to their team. They are then locked in until they very end of the show.

What happens if the team don't have enough clues/are not sure about the code word?
Once the gong has gone for a second time there is the chance to gain four more clues. This is done by contenders placing their hands inside the tiger's heads by the treasure room door inside which can they find a clue. Their hands however are trapped inside so that they cannot enter the treasure room.

What happens if the team don't guess the correct code word?
If the code word is incorrect, the treasure room door begins to shut and the tigers are released. However to make up for their dissapointment, Boyard presents the team with a small bag of gold (series one) or a single gold coin (series two).
