My Ode to childhood

Remember when you worried about forest fires?
"Help take a bite out of crime."
"Never climb trees near overhead lines."

Climbing trees.
Trampolines.
I liked worrying about that.

My spelling bee contest worries.
When everyone had art class and music class.
When it was civilized to finger paint and paint by number.

Everyone had their square of linoleum for break-dancing.
I couldn't wait to go see "Empire Strikes Back." I couldn't wait for recess.
Pigtails. "We want a pitcher, not a belly-itcher!"
Fun Day when I was the best high jumper in my class.
"Eine Menie Mineie Moe." Jump rope. Jungle gym.
Bed time story. Color in the lines.
When I had seat work, not homework.
We got gold stars for good grades.
We had classroom hamsters.
Lice was our only fear.
Lunch-boxes. Snoopy.
Rubik's cube.
Opposite Day.
Jello.

I miss it.
