Old House #1
Location: Near Petitcodiac, NB
Structure type: 2-storie house
Condition: 1/5
Date Visited: July 31, 2008
This poor old house has obviously been neglected for a very long time, and is now far beyond what could be considered a repairable state. The center portion has completely collapsed, and the sections still standing are all leaning inwards. My guess is that someone forcibly removed a metal chimney at some point, leaving a hole in the roof through which the elements could wage their attack.
The view from the West side. Note the small bird at the left tip of the roof.
                    The old water pump.
The front door, or at least where it used to be.
I first discovered this house back in 2001 (more on that later), when it was still possible to enter at least part of the downstairs. By the time these pictures were taken, I could only step inside the front door - any further passage was simply too dangerous, if not impossible.
An old-fashioned water pump can be seen nearby, as well as the ruins of a barn. Surprisingly, the power line is still connected to the house, though it obviously isn't live anymore.
Below are some pictures showing what the house looked like in 2001 - most are still frames from a videotape, so the quality isn't very good. But it shows how dramatically the house has changed over the last seven years.
                    It's a bit of a fixer-upper.....
Somewhere inside, though I forget just where.
The corner of the old barn, but note the big old house in the background. This was also abandoned, but since it still looked pretty good I didn't think it was worth photographing. But I should have - because somebody burned it down in 2004. The houses infamous recent history may have had something to do with it. The last occupant had kept more than 50 cats in the house, and by the time she and the cats were removed, the house was uninhabitable.
The arsonist was never caught, but I suspect it may have been someone local, who knew what was inside and was perhaps worried about the health hazard it posed..
I was relieved to find the other old house still standing, but at the same time sorry I didn't get some better pictures of this one.
You've heard of low-flow toilets? Here's a no-flow toilet.
The old barn, in 2001. The small building attached at the right is an outhouse.
The house as it appeared in October 2001, from a 35mm photo. I wish I had more good pictures like this.
