There is yet another element to this story that, surprisingly, has yet to be addressed: What part does Jeff Hardy play in the Matt/Lita love story? It's an element that has gone largely ignored, but one that could ignite the situation beyond repair. For as superhuman as he sometimes seems in the ring, Jeff is still very much human. Spending so much time with a woman as beautiful as Lita would cloud the judgment of just about any red-blooded American male.
It's happened before. In fact, longtime fans will recall how the elite supergroup of Hulk Hogan and "Macho Man" Randy Savage -- known as the Mega-Powers -- was shredded by the presence of a woman. They started off in late 1987 as sports entertainment's dream team, its two most popular Superstars joined together to dominate seemingly for years to come. Savage was the Federation Champion, and Hogan was the Federation's biggst star. But then there was the lovely Miss Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was Savage's manager, and it was suspected by many that he was hopelessly in love with the woman as well, despite his macho demeanor. Before long, friciton arose over Elizabeth's attention. Hogan took her on as his manager as well, and Savage's jealousy began to smolder. It was during a February 1988 match against Big Bossman and Akeem that mattes came to a head. Liz was accidentally injured at ringside, and the Hulkster escorted her back to the locker room, seemingly abandoning the Macho Man. Savage was furious, and jumped Hogan backstage, igniting a bitter war. The Mega-Powers were no more.
If an alliance as formidable as the one between Hogan and Savage could be obliterated by such a seemingly petty issue, certainly no one is immune. Should Jeff Hardy be secretly harboring feelings for Lita, the days of the eXtreme Team may be numbered.
