Matt: In January 1999 we all went down to Union Pines to check out an NWA MId-Atlantic show. That was the first time I laid eyes on Amy Dumas. She had a match against a girl named Strawberry Fields and it was brutal, just a complete train wreck. But it was obvious to me that this girl was trying hard -- she was athletic and daring, jumping off the ropes, doing things that you didn't typically see girls do. She was also really attractive, with this stange and powerful charisma that just shined through.
Amy had been dating this guy Beau Beau, who was in a punk band called Avail, out of Richmond, Virginia. They had a very on-and-off relationship, with him going on tour all the time. The next time I saw her was a few weeks later at another NWA Mid-Atlantic show, this time in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. NWA Mid-Atlantic was a shady little operation, run by this guy Slim, who owned a nuch of strip clubs and was part owner of this club in Charlotte, Club 2000.
Some people ended up going back there, and Amy and I hung out awhile. The next thing I knew, we were sitting in my Cougar, making out. We went back to Slim's house and hung out in his Jacuzzi. We actually dared each other to get naked, but that was all we did at first.
We did end up spending the night together, and that morning she talked about how she had this boyfriend that she was getting ready to leave. "I don't typically do stuff like this," she said. She was feeling very awkward about it, but I told her it was totally cool, it was a fun night, no problem.
I gave her my number and told her to call me and I'd help her out with her wrestling career.
After that she said, "I'd love to train with you guys, if you don't mind." She was living in Richmond, Virginina, but would drive down to Cameron every weekend. We'd go over to a friend's trailer and fool around, but neither of us saw it as anything serious.
What was important was that Amy had truly fallen in love with wrestling. It was obvious that she'd finally found the thing she wanted to do with her life.
