Round Robin #2: the title-less story

7:45am

Anne Shirley, rolled over and looked at her clock radio. 7:45
"Oh my gosh!! Diana, my alarm didn't go off!!" Anne jumped out of bed and hurried around the room. Her and her best friend, Diana Barry shared the apartment. They decided to rent an apartment near the school their second year. It was much cheaper than living on campus.
"Mmmfffmm," Diana said as she rolled over and went back to sleep.
"Oh!!" Anne whispered. "Where did I put that skirt?" She threw some shirts out of the way.
How did her room get so messy so quickly, she looked over at Diana. That's how, she thought to herself and smiled.
"Here it is!" She yelled.
"Anne!!" Diana said as she threw a pillow at her best friend, "I don't have to get up yet!!"
"Sorry, Diana, I didn't mean to yell," Anne said after she got the pillow out of her face.
Diana laughed, "hurry up and get dressed or you'll be late."
Anne got dressed as fast as she could, grabbed the keys to her car and ran out the door. She looked at her watch. 7:59. Her class started at 8:30. Anne could hear her stomach growling. She had time to stop off at Tim Horton's and grab a cinnamon raisin bagel and a large peach drink.

Anne turned into her usual parking lot. Her first class was in the building right across the street, she would have plenty of time. She drove toward her favourite parking spot. She sharply turned the corner and her peach drink spilled all over the passenger side. "Oh sh-" She turned her head to see the mess on the seat and floor. *CRASH* Anne jolted forward.
"Oh no!!" She cried. The front of her silver escort was wrapped around the front corner of a deep green explorer. The driver jumped out of his car. Anne heart skipped a beat. The driver was a tall, dark curly haired guy, with a well defined body and beautiful brown eyes.
Anne opened her door, and got out, her long auburn hair draped over her shoulders. She didn't have time to find her hair elastic, to throw it in a ponytail.
"Look what you did!" The handsome stranger yelled.
"Me?!?!" Anne retorded. "You should have looked where you were going!" Anne knew that she was the one who hadn't been looking, but who was he to yell her like that?!"
"I was looking where I was going, and if you weren't swerving all over the place maybe this wouldn't have happened!"
"Thanks a lot," Anne said ignoring his last comment, "now Im going to be late for class!!"
A crowd started to form, all wanting to see what happened.
"Look," the stranger replied in the cutest Canadian accent. Anne was finding it hard to stay mad at him. "This arguing isnt getting us anywhere," he extended he hand. "Im Gilbert Blythe."
"Anne Shirley." Anne grabbed his hand. His grip was so strong and yet gentle, and his skin was so smooth... "Anne?" Gilbert repeated, he was talking to her. She snapped out of her daydream.
"Yes?" She mumbled.
"If it was okay with you, I was going to suggest we walk down to campus police to report the accident?"

Liz23
"....Of course," continued Gilbert, "if you have to get to class I can do it and catch up with you later."
"That's all right," said Anne with a toss of her head. "I want to make sure that BOTH sides of the story are told."
Gilbert shrugged. "Fine with me," he said. He was intrigued by this stubborn redhead.
Fortunately, a university policeman pulled up right at that moment. "Ah..." he said. "I see we have a little fender bender. Why don't we get these cars out of everyone's way and then we can have a little chat."
Gilbert and Anne got into their respective cars and moved them into parking spaces. Anne braced herself. She did NOT need another ticket and increased car insurance. Maybe the officer would take pity on her. When she got out of her car, Gilbert was already talking to the officer. Anne thought again how very, very attractive he was. As she approached the officer, she heard Gilbert saying, "Yes, I really wasn't looking or paying attention. That's why I hit her."
"Well," said the officer, "it looked to me from what I saw that she pulled in front of you as she turned the corner."
Both looked up as she approached holding her license, registration, and insurance card. "Thank you," said the officer.
"I suggest you two copy down each other's information." Gilbert chuckled to himself. What a great way to get this girl's phone number without having to ask for it!
In a few minutes everything was taken care of and the officer departed. Anne looked again at the front of her car and sighed. She looked inside and saw her peach drink all over the passenger seat, AND her English textbook and notebook. What a day this was turning out to be. She took some Kleenex and tried to mop it up best she could. She checked her watch. 8:50. Her first class was a wash. Now she had time to kill before her 10:30 class. She didn't feel like going home, so she thought she'd find a phone to call in her insurance claim, and then she'd stop in the computer lab and check her email.
Suddenly she sensed someone standing behind her. "Anne," said Gilbert softly. Anne turned.
Gilbert was holding a roll of paper towels. "I keep these in my explorer." Anne looked at him blankly. "For your mess."
"Thank you very much, Mr. Blythe, but you've done enough for one day. If you'll excuse me, I must go now." Gilbert looked at his feet. "Anne, I thought maybe you'd like to get something to eat with me. I have some time before my next class and I thought maybe you'd like to talk."
"No thank you, Mr. Blythe. I really must go." Anne collected her mess as best she could and walked off, leaving Gilbert watching after her curiously.

Feeling tired and anxious from that morning's events, Anne decided to go back to the apartment for a while and try to calm down before her next class.
She entered her bedroom and collapsed on the bed. "What a morning!" She said, to herself as she pulled the covers up to her chin. Her head rested on the soft pillow. The room was very dark and not a sound was to be heard from outside or the neighboring apartments. In less than 10 minutes, Anne was asleep.
Anne rolled over and stretched, then snuggled back down into the covers wanting to continue her dream. She had dreamed about a mysterious, handsome admirer, but she could not see his face. She had awoken just as he was about to turn around. Anne suddenly jumped up and looked at the clock, 2:30!! How could she have slept so long? She had missed a whole day of classes. Oversleeping twice in one day, getting into a wreck in the parking lot!! Am I just becoming incredibly irresponsible? Anne thought to herself.
She climbed out of bed and stumbled awkwardly to the door, still pretty groggy. "Diana! Diana, are you here? You will not believe what I have done!" Anne said as she walked down the hall.
"Oh, Anne, you're up! Are you okay, I was worried! You never miss class." Diana said walking towards her. Anne looked quite a fright! Her clothes were wrinkled and her hair jutted out every which way. Before Anne could answer, a young man stood from where he sat on the couch and turned around to face her.
"Hello Anne," he said with a smile. It was the person she had hit this morning. "I am sorry to disturb you at home. I got your address from the student access directory on the University's website." Gilbert paused and couldn't help but smile at the almost sleepwalking figure before him.
At this point, Anne became aware of how she looked and dashed into the bedroom after a quick, "Excuse me for a moment please."
Diana followed, "Anne! I am just dying to know what is going on! Who is this Gilbert Blythe fellow? What happened?"
Anne fiercely tugged at her hair with a brush while briefly going over the morning's events to Diana. "Why didn't you wake me when he got here?" Anne asked Diana, trying not to sound upset.
"I was afraid that you were not feeling well. Oh, he is handsome." Diana said dreamily. Anne threw the brush down and rolled her eyes at her roommate, but smiled to herself as she walked back out to her guest. He is handsome, Anne thought to herself.
Anne walked into the room and saw Gilbert bent over, looking at photos of Anne and her family. "I'm so sorry about that Mr. Blythe!" Anne said.
"Oh, that's certainly all right!" He said cheerfully. "I thought it might be easier for us deal with the details of the accident privately, without having to contact our insurance companies, or have it go on our driving records. So, how about I take my car in to the mechanic tomorrow and call you with the estimate?" Gilbert said smiling, thinking he was doing an awfully generous thing for this girl.
"Give me the estimate! You ran into me, Mr. Blythe!" Anne said irratedly.
She new very well that he had not made the mistake, but she was so tired and confused, she didn't know what she was saying. Gilbert stood motionless, not knowing what to say next.

Averil
Anne closed her eyes. She knew the accident was not Gilbert's fault but she did not want to admit her horrible failure. She knew that had she been paying attention, she would have seen his Explorer and would have never hit it.
However, she rationalized with the velocity of thought, he musnt have been paying attention to me either or he wouldnt have hit me. He did admit to the officer that he wasnt paying attention. Why did he do that?
In fact, Anne couldnt have been more right and wrong at the same time. Gilbert Blythe WASNT paying attention to Annes car. He was paying attention to her beautiful flowing red hair and the expressive eyes that were so distracted by something else in the car.
So, it wasnt exactly a lie when he admitted fault to the police officer. And he wasnt exactly destroyed at the fact that a bump on his fender allowed him to meet the owner of that hair and those eyes. But right now she was aggravating him more than anything. Why was she blaming him after all he had done for her?
"You did admit to the police officer that YOU were at fault, MISter Blythe," Anne finally vocalized.
"I did that to help you MISS Shirley, Gilbert fumed back. He inhaled deeply. "Come on Anne," he pleaded, "Cant we talk about this calmly and rationally and figure out what happened and how we are going to deal with it.
Anne reconsidered for a moment, but then in the next thought a horrible realization entered her brain. "Not now, Im LATE," she said with an exaggerated gasp. "AGAIN!" She glanced at her watch in hopes that the time would change, but it only made matters worse. She grabbed for her peachy mushy books, car keys, and leaped out the door.
"Work," answered the confused but amused Diana before Gilbert could ask the question.
"May I ask where that is?" The handsome visitor meekly asked.
"The front desk of the Montgomery," replied Diana, referring to the university library.
"Thanks Diana," Gil said. He was glad someone in this house was sane and sensible. "Well, I hope I see you around," Gilbert left the apartment a little glumly. How did he end up on the bad side of this Anne Shirley after all he had done for her? More importantly, how could he get on her good side? How could he get to know this odd girl better? This would take some serious effort on his side.
Suddenly, a thin blonde woman thundered toward him. "Gilbert Blythe!" she snarled. "Where have you been?"
"Josie, I..." Gilbert began.

Valancy
"Ive been waiting for you for hours Gilbert Blythe! whined Josie without waiting for Gilberts response. "Didnt you remember that we were meeting for lunch at the Plum Puff Cafe to go over our art history presentation?"
"Oh sorry Josie. I was in an accident this morning and have been..." Gilbert began.
"An accident? What happened?" Josie questioned.
"Just a fortunate...er I mean...unfortunate little bump," slipped Gilbert.
"Well, youre fine now I can see. We better get working on the project. We have to make our presentation on the Group of Seven in two weeks! How will we ever finish it in time? Gilbert, we REALLY need to get started tonight!"
Gilbert took a deep breath. Why had he ever agreed to be Josies partner for the project. He had a deep-seated suspicion that he was going to do the whole thing himself.
"What research have you done Gilbert? I havent found a SINGLE thing yet," Josie sighed.
"Have you checked the National Gallery webpage Josie? They are some good links," suggested Gilbert.
"Oh, yeah, of course," Josie said a little too quickly.
"Maybe we should head to the library," Gilbert suggested.
Josie and Gilbert entered the Montgomery and headed off to the art history section.
Meanwhile Anne was busy collecting the stacks of books left by the copy machines on a library cart. Of course her spirit was far outside the library as she daydreamed of being Joan of Arc with gleaming eyes.
Gilbert arrived at the copiers staring with interest at Tom Thomsons Jack Pine rather than watching where he was going.
"Beautiful," he said lightly under his breath as he bumped into the re-shelving cart knocking two books to the floor.
Anne turned around with a start. "What did you say?"

Avonleadotnet
Anne and Gilbert stared at each other.
"I said 'beautiful'," Gilbert said with a lopsided smile.
"Mr. Blythe, if you think you can compliment me into admitting that I was at fault this morning, you are sorely mistaken," Anne huffed. "In fact, I think that you--" Anne cut off her sentence when she saw Gilbert hold up the art book and point to the picture that had held his fascination.
"Don't you think it's beautiful? Do you like art? I'm working on a great project for my art history class and I--" Gilbert was cut off, too.
"Mr. Blythe, I really have no time to discuss frivolities with you. I must get back to my job," Anne quickly said, and turned away so that he wouldn't be able to see the crimson flush of her cheeks. Great, now he thinks that I think that he said I was beautiful, Anne thought to herself.
"Haven't you made the copies YET, Gilbert? This old library is so boring," a beliegerent Josie said as she walked over to the copier where Anne and Gilbert stood. She looked Anne over from head to toe with snobby disapproval. Anne gave her a haughty glance and busied herself with opening a box of toner.
"Not yet, Josie. I want to get some copies of Titian's work for another project. Red hair is very becoming, don't you think?" Gilbert smiled and looked from Josie to Anne.
"Well, I certainly don't have any use for it. I feel very fortunate that I was born a natural blonde. Blondes have more fun...except when they're stuck in libraries." Josie smirked.
A lanky boy who had been standing next to the book drop-off box overheard them.
"Natural?!" he hooted. "Josie, everyone knows you're a bottle blonde, so give it up already."
"Charlie Sloane, I wasn't talking to you." Josie sniffed, before turning her attention back to Gilbert. She was very displeased to see that he was watching Anne as she added the new toner cartridge to the copy machine. He handed Anne a tissue to wipe off her hands, which she refused, reaching instead for her own lace hankie.
"Come on, Gilbert, we can get those copies later. Let's go talk a while," Josie pulled him away by the arm. Gilbert, feeling helpless and awkward about what to say to Anne, let Josie drag him away.
Anne felt tremendous relief that Gilbert and his snotty friend had left. She didn't care to waste her precious time on a guy who would hang around the likes of that flirty bimbo, even if he did have melting chocolate eyes. She was glad it was time for her 10 minute break, and she rushed over to the computer to check her e-mail. There was a message from Diana, which was rare because Diana didn't much care for e-mail. She always said she was computer illiterate and had never quite gotten over the embarassment caused in a high school computer class, when the teacher had told everyone to close Windows, and she had rushed over to the windows and closed them soundly.
"Not another virus alert," Anne groaned as she clicked the envelope icon.
But what Diana had to write about was much more exciting.

princessjess_17
Dear Anne,

Well, first of all I hope that you receive this soon after I write this, but more importantly that I have sent it right. I won't regail you with my ovious and embarrassing computer illiteracy, I'll save my energy for the piano. Well, of course you are asking yourself why on earth I would bother to email you but I had to contact you right away, and knew that you'd be on the computer at the library.
Oh Anne I am so excited I can barely write!!!. Fred Wright has asked me to dinner tonight and the Plum Puff Cafe. Who is Fred Wright you may ask?.
Well this afternoon, after you left for work, I went across to the music conservatorium and put in a few hours practice on the gorgeous white grand piano they have. Just as I got up and collected my music, this strange, rather shy, guy appeared from the other side of the room. I realised then that he must have been sitting there listening to me play the whole time. I didn't know how to react at first, then he said.
"I didn't mean to scare you. Please, it's that your music was so um..nice..um lovely."
"You really think so?" I blurted out.
"Oh yes..um..hi I'm Fred, Fred Wright."
I replied with my name and then he inquired if I was free tonight, and I said that I was. Then I remembered our plans to see a movie and he suggested whether we could all go out and he would bring a friend.I remarked that this was all a little to sudden but he seemed very persistant. I finally agreed for us to meet him and his friend tonight at the Plum Pluf Cafe. Oh I hope you dont mind if they come along as well Anne, I'm sure Fred's friend is just every bit as nice as Fred.
Anyway, I'll see you back at the room later on, email me if there is a problem.

Your bossom friend,
Diana.

Anne didn't have time to make of it all, because at that moment the head libarian called her name. "Anne, can I see you for a minute?"
"Yes, Ms Stacey."

annekind
Anne asked as she closed her email. "Anne, I just received a call Ruby Gillis, apparently she has a case of the flu and will be unable to work tonight. I was wondering if perhaps you could fill in for her?" Ms. Stacey asked in her cheerful voice. Any other time Anne would have done anything for Ms. Stacy, but tonight she was interested in meeting Diana's date.
"I'm sorry Ms. Stacey, but I've just been informed that I have a date tonight!"
Ms. Stacey gave Anne a warm and curious smile, "I suppose with that young man I saw you chatting with a few moments ago, he is very handsome, Anne." Anne felt her face begin to get hot and she was certain that it now matched her hair.
"Absolutely not!!", Anne protested. I would rather die than go out with that....that....EEEEWWWW...HE MAKES ME SO MAD!"
Ms. Stacey's eyes widened with surprise, "Anne Shirley, what could that young man have possibly done to make you so upset? And please, watch your tone in here."
Anne sighed, "I'm sorry Ms. Stacey, I know I shouldn't have raised my voice. He just infuriates me. It's really a long story."
Anne makes an attempt to change the subject, "I'm really sorry I can't stay... any other time I would, you know that, Ms. Stacey." Ms. Stacey smiled and patted Anne on the shoulder, "I know that Anne. Before you leave I want you to remember one thing...'Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it'."
As Anne begins to gather her things and get back to work she hears Ms. Stacey calling out, "Jane...Jane Andrews? May I have a word with you?" Anne smiles as she gets back to her carts. Anne's thoughts are now on her evening out...
"Maybe tonight is what I need to take my mind off of today's events", she mumbles to herself as she starts shevling some books.

Sunburst
"What he canceled?!" exclaimed Anne.
"Yeah! I didnt have time to e-mail you. He said his friend was too busy with schoolwork to join us. Maybe he doesnt like me?"
"Well did he asked to reschedule."
"Yeah. He said hell call." They both looked at each other and smiled.
Anne then grab Diana by the arm, "Well Ms. Barry I think you owe me movie."
"Yeah, I feel like watching some men blown up to smithereens."

***

The next evening:
"Anne, cheer up!" shouted Diana from the bathroom. Anne was perched on the fire escape outside their apartment and didnt hear her. Clutching her Romeo and Juliet book, Anne let out a sigh and look longingly at the rumbling street below.
"Oh Romeo, Romeo. Where for art thou Romeo." She heard Diana approaching and turned to the window. Anne made her way inside toward their big white couch.
"Oh Diana! You, Ruby and Jane should go without me. I wont be much company since I am in the depths of despair!" cried Anne as she place her hand over her forehead and proceeded to faint, landing backward onto the soft cushions." "Oh no! Youre not leaving me with Jane and Ruby. You know how they are when theyre together. Im just surprise they havent killed each other yet." Anne started to giggle for their friends, Ruby and Jane are clearly the "Odd Couple". Always bickering wherever they go yet still remain roommates.
The truth of the matter was that despite their differences, they wouldnt room with anyone except each other. They were bosom pals at heart like her and Diana even though neither of them would be the first to admit it.
"Beside were going to the Beatnik Revival Cafe. If youre talking about wallowing in misery that place is heaven for manic-depressants," grinned Diana. Anne smiled up at her.
"Alright Diana. You know it has always been dream of mine to act in Romeo and Juliette at the Stratford's Festival. Me as the starry eyed Juliette." Anne let out a groan and covered her face with a pillow.
"But no where in my dream did I ever imagine myself auditioning in front of a Mr. Phillips. The only drama teacher... no. The only teacher that ever hated me. You should see him at the drama club meetings Diana. He struts around like a vain peacock after the announcement that he would be in charge of the production of Romeo and Juliette. Auditions are coming up soon."
"Anne. Your the greatest actress I know."
"Im the only actress you know." Anne smiled, "I just have a strong feeling that Mr. Phillips going to pick Prissy Andrews. Everyone in class knows hes completely infatuated with her."
"Didnt you tell me that Roy Gardner is a shoe in for Romeo. I think Mr. Phillips wouldnt enjoy watching his drama queen kissing a hansom and rich fellow like Roy. It he picks her, Mr. Phillips probably going to edit out all the steamy scenes or play Romeo himself." They both laughed and Anne got up and hug her friend.
"Thanks. Now give me five minutes to get ready."
Soon they found themselves sitting in their usual table at the Beatnik Revival Cafe with Ruby and Jane, who were already bickering with each other. Anne smiled at Diana who rolled her eyes and smiled back at her.
Anne then straighten her black tank over her black boot-legged slacks and adjusted her glittery white lace shawl, which was wrapped around her waist like a skirt. She then settled back in her wooden chair, slowly breathing in the espresso filled air and listening to the numerous broken conversations in the room that melded together in one incoherent and passionate beat. Anne and Diana had discovered the little cafe last year and were avid patrons ever since. They befriended the owner Alicee Lason who dropped out of college to run the cafe after her father Grand Monsieur Lason past away. Alicee always said with praise. "He was a real cool cat. He always bee-bop, and skid-a-skag his way all through life."
"I swear Ruby I cant believe your actually wore that get up." sigh Jane over Rubys black cat suit with a matching beret and scarf.
"Oh Jane. Just because a certain somebody doesnt have a body of a dancer should be jealous of someone who does."
"Me jealous of you Ruby. Please! You look like a deranged mime."
"Puh-lease Jane, I can practically see your jealousy glimmering off your double mocha latte," responded Ruby taking a sip of her espresso.
"Come on you guys. Its open mike night. Do you guys want to get kicked out again for disturbing the performers like last time?" exclaimed Diana.
"Yeah Jane. Just because of you I never got to read my poem."
"Im sure the world was better off without it." snickered Jane.
"Good grief! Can you guys give it a break or should we leave right now," declared Anne. Ruby quickly stuck her tongue out at Jane, but then the two promise to be good.
"Well anyway! So Anne, what are you planning to recite tonight? One of your tragic-romantic poems." asked Ruby gleefully. "Im planning to recite The Highway Man tonight. The most classic, tragically and romantic poem ever written. I want to make my audience cry!" responded Anne as she places her hand over her heart. They all broke out into laughter not noticing the new patrons coming in.
"Moody, wherever did you find this place?" laughed Gilbert as Moody, Fred and Josie took their seats two table behind Annes table.
"Charlie recommended it to me. He said it is a great place to get a good laugh at some crazy drama students!"
"Well theres not much to say about its interior design. Its just absolutely dreadful," said Josie as she twisted her face in disgust.
"I kind of like it. It has this free spirit quality about it," responded Gilbert.
"Oh, did I said dreadful. I mean delightful...I just didnt give it enough time to sink in but yes I do see the free spirit quality about it," chirped Josie as she hugged Gilberts arm. Fred and Moody looked at each other and rolled their eyes. They knew Josie was in love with Gilbert, who was just too kind to reject her. Instead Gilbert felt by referring to her as a sister every single chance he get that somehow shell get the message.
Gilbert pulled away, "Josie, I always said that you could be my sister. We think exactly the same. I swear one of these days we should go in for a DNA test." Josie stared blankly at Gilbert.
"Oh that so sweet Gilbert!" Josie smiled and rest her head on his arm.
Gilbert began to wonder if this method was working at all. Then someone dimmed the light as Alicee took the stage. "Okay quiet people! Our next open mike performer is Ruby Gillis. This her debut so lets give her a warm Beatnik welcome." Everyone snapped their fingers.
Standing in front of a bearded bongo drummer and long-haired bass player, Ruby did a ballerina twirl and then lifted her arms in a wide v-shape as the musicians accompany her in a quick tempo and paused as Ruby bellowed from the top of her lungs.
"Hello world here I am! With my heart full of joy!"
"Oh brother," whispered Jane burying her face in her hands. Anne and Diana shush her and listen to the rest of Rubys poem. Then the room exploded with finger snaps as the jubilant Ruby descended from the stage to the table, where she was greeted with praises from Anne, Diana and even Jane.
Gilbert was following Ruby and spotted Anne. His heart lifted and he quickly turned to Josie. "Hey Josie can you order me a cup of coffee?" When she happily went away, Gilbert grabbed Moody next to him and said, "Thats her. Thats the girl!"
Fred turned and looked. He spotted Diana and cried, "Gilbert! How do you know her? I saw her first!" He pushed up his gold rimmed spectacles.
"What?! What you mean Fred? Anne?" exclaimed Gilbert.
"Whos Anne? What?! Um...never mind." Freds cheeks redden. He quickly looked down into his cup of coffee.
Moody grabbed Fred into a headlock, "Oh! Looks like someone got himself a girlfriend. Freds in love. Whose the lucky lady?"
"I dont know what your talking about," mumbled Fred.
"We're all best pals here. Come on man spill! Tell us about the girl you love." Moody made kissing noises as Fred struggled in the headlock. As they playfully wrestled, Gilbert was going to asked Fred to explain, but Josie came back with his coffee. Alicee took the stage again.
"Thank you Ruby. Now I have a treat for you guys tonight for our very own Miss Anne Shirley have decided to grace us with her presence. So lets hear it for Ms. Anne Shirley," announced Alicee with a smile.
Gilbert stare at Anne so intensely when she took the stage that even Josie couldnt help but notice it. Josie crossed her arm and thought to herself, "I really hate this Anne Shirley." Gilbert continue to watch Anne as she pushed her long reddish-auburn hair over her shoulder and smiled at the audience.
"Thank you, I decided to recite The Highway Man tonight and I hope you enjoy it." Anne cued the musician and began to recite The Highway Man in a bold and passionate voice that ended with an explosion of applause and cheers. Even Gilbert stood up cheering, "Encore, encore!" Never before had anything moved him so much in his entire life.
Overwhelmed and buzzed by the response, Anne didnt notice Gilbert. Instead she quickly headed down the stage and promise her friends that shell return quickly after she grab a drink. She headed for counter order a raspberry cordial to calm her excitement.
Gilbert watch her as she stood alone at the counter. He had to talk to her, but not with Josie around. He needed to distract her somehow. Josie was busy drinking her cappuccino that Gilbert took the opportunity to quickly whispered to Moody, who was still harassing poor Fred with noogies.
"Hey Moody! Can you quickly distract Josie while I talk to Anne." Moody release the red face Fred.
"Alright just keep talking to her." As Gilbert started small talk with Josie. Moody pretended to drop his spoon. "Opps, I dropped my spoon," he said mechanically and went down to pick it up.
Instead he grab Josies bag, which was under her chair and stole her compact mirror. Fred smooth out his light brown hair and started to clean his glasses to prevent himself from laughing. Moody proceeded back up to his chair and looked at Josie while she talk to Gilbert. He motion for her attention by pointing at his nose and rubbing it. He started to mouthed words at her saying, "Theres something in your nose."
Josie looked shock and embarrass but try to remain calm. "Excuse me Gilbert," she slyly covered her nose as she picked up her bag and searched for her compact mirror.
Discovering it was missing, Josie kept her hand over her nose and excused herself from the table and quickly fled to the powder room. Gilbert and Fred then watch Moody in his green #26 football jersey shirt followed Josie. And before they knew it, Moody was pulling at the ladies restroom door and locking Josie temporarily inside the bathroom. He turned his head to Gilbert and gave him a quick thumbs up.
"This is not good. Josie going to go ballistic," mummbled Fred. Gilbert grinned and smooth out his white t-shirt and cargo pants. "Shell be okay. Now if you'll excuse me, theres a certain red head I need to talk to." declared Gilbert. He then proceeded slowly towards Anne.

Forever_Anne
Gilbert cleared his throat. "Hello Anne."
Anne spun around at the sound of her name. "Gilbert, hello, how are you?" Anne replied. She felt her stomach knot up, and the heat rise in her face. Gilbert was looking especially handsome tonight. She wondered why she was angry with him in the first place.
"You read beautifully tonight, I've never heard anything read with such passion."
"Thank you Gilbert," Anne blushed.
Just then there was a loud shriek coming from the bathroom. Josie.
Moody had already made it back to his seat and was chatting away with Fred. Alicee heard the screaming and rushed to the bathroom. Realizing it was locked she opened it to a fuming Josie.
Josie stormed back to the table, her face red as fire. "Josie, what happened?" Moody asked innocently. Fred coughed to hide his laughter.
"Someone locked the door on me!! You idiot!" She flopped in her chair, trying to hide her embarrassment.

"Isn't that your girlfriend?" Anne asked, remembering the annoying blonde from the library.
"Who, Josie?" Gilbert laughed. "She's not my girlfriend! She's just a friend, sort of." Gilbert smiled.
"Anne, I was wondering if..." Gilbert paused, "if we could forget about this whole accident thing, and just be friends. I understand that you spilled your drink so you weren't paying atten-"
Anne cut him off. "Are you saying it's all my fault?!"
"Anne, it doesn't matter who was at fault-"
"Gilbert Blythe, I don't want to discuss this anymore." Anne grabbed her purse, went back to her table, got her friends and stormed out the door.

***

The next morning, Anne woke up to the phone ringing. Her first class wasn't until noon, so she slept in. Diana answered the phone and started jabbering away. Anne got up and went to the bathroom.
When she came out Diana flew to her. "Anne!! That was Fred!! He wants to reshedule the date and was wondering if we were busy this Friday night!" Diana replied excitedly. "I know you don't have classes Friday, but I wasn't sure if you were working," Diana said.
"Yes, I am working, but only till 5," Anne replied, smiling at her friend.
"So then you'll come with us? Fred said he talked to his friend and he's free that night too."
"Yes, of course I'll come Diana," Anne smiled. "I know how much this means to you."
Diana gave Anne a big hug, "thank you!" She exclaimed. "I'll call Fred back right now!"

Friday night, 6:45 p.m.
Anne was sitting on her couch watching TV while listening to an endless stream of conversation from Diana, who was in her room getting ready. If Anne heard her say "Almost ready," one more time she was going to scream.
Finally, she was ready to go. Diana and Fred had planned to meet at the Plum Puff Caf at 7 pm.
So, said Anne as they climbed into Dianas blue Focus, did Fred tell you anything about his friend?
Nothing, replied Diana. I just met Fred myself, remember? Im sure hes very nice.
Anne sighed, remembering another nice blind date Diana had set her up with last year. She glanced sideways at Diana, who was checking her hair and makeup in the mirror at every stoplight. Diana had already fallen hard having just met Fred.
They parked outside the Caf and entered. It was a popular date restaurant for university students. Diana peeked around the hostess to see if Fred and his friend were there. She spotted them. Anne, there they are.
The two girls walked towards the table for four. Anne saw a studious looking guy with glasses, who she assumed to be Fred from the way Diana described him. She could only see the back of the friends head.
Suddenly Fred spotted them and jumped up. Diana! Good to see you!
As he jumped up, his friend turned around. Anne looked confusedly at him for a brief moment until recognition dawned on her. The friend knew immediately who she was, however.
Gilbert Blythe stood up. Anne Shirley, he said smiling, how good to see you again.
Mr. Blythe... hello, Anne blushed, much to her surprise and confusion. She looked from Gilbert to Fred to Diana. Fred was looking at Diana and ignoring Gilbert and Anne. Diana gave her a congratulatory look before turning her attention to Fred.
Obviously Diana hadnt been paying attention when Anne had stomped around the apartment complaining about that idiot Gilbert Blythe who hit my car.
Suddenly, Fred remembered his manners. This is my friend Gilbert Blythe, he said to Anne unnecessarily. And this is...?
Anne Shirley, supplemented Diana. But I think they actually know each other already.
Oh, great! said Fred before proceeding to ask Diana about herself.
Anne had yet to sit down. Gilbert pulled out the chair for her. Why, why, why was she here with this maddeningly handsome Gilbert Blythe? And why was her face burning and her stomach knotting up?
Gilbert, for his part, couldnt have been more delighted. He had also learned his lesson more than once and decided not to even bring up the accident at all. Both of them had filed with the insurance companies and things were proceeding smoothly. But why couldnt he think of a thing to say to this girl... this girl who wasnt like any girl he had ever met?
So how long have you worked at the library? he said inanely.
Anne had hidden her face behind her menu. She was intently studying the entrees. She didnt answer.
Um... Anne? he said again.
Im sorry, what? she replied. She didnt look up, not wanting to be drawn in again by those deep brown eyes that always looked at her so intently.
I was just wondering how long you had worked at the library.
Oh, since I started school here. Its my work study, she mumbled in reply.
Fortunately, they were both saved by the arrival of the waitress and their drinks. Unfortunately, as she was setting down Dianas Diet Coke, her hand slipped and the drink ended up in Dianas lap.
Diana jumped up. Too late. Coke was all over her white blouse and capri pants. The waitress was very apologetic and told them their meal would be complimentary.
Diana tried to sop up the mess with the napkins. Oh... Im going to have to go home and change. I cant stay in these clothes.
Anne started to get up to go with her, but Fred nervously said, Can I come with you and help you Diana?
Id like that, said Diana, giving Anne a wink and a look that said, I hope things go better for you.
Before Anne could say anything, Fred and a very wet Diana were out the door and Anne was left sitting alone with Gilbert Blythe.

Forever_Anne
Anne cleared her throat nervously and began sipping her apple juice.
Gilbert could feel his palms beginging to sweat. Now was his chance to start on the right foot. He wasn't going to mention the car accident to the stubbornly beautiful redhead.
"So, um Anne, how are you classes so far this semester?" Gilbert asked trying to break the silence.
"Oh they're alright I guess, it's going to be a lot of work though. How about you? What classes are you taking?"
"So far its going pretty good, but I think your right it's going to be a challenging semester. Well, I'm taking 6 classes, instead of the required 5 so I can fast track and hopefully get into medical school a year early. I'm taking Art History, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology and for fun Social Psychology.
"Is you Human Anatomy with Dr. Taylor?" Anne asked.
"Yes, how did you know?" Gilbert questioned.
"I have him too! Monday and Wednesday at 10:30am?"
"Yes, that's right," Gilbert smiled, "Wow, now I'll have a friend in that class, that is if you'll sit by me..."
Anne smiled, "Sure...hey, I think I'm taking Social Psyc. too, haha, who's the professor?"
"Dr. Towson, I have it after Anatomy."
"I think I'm in there too...how come I havent' seen you in there yet?"
"Well, last Wednesday was the first day of classes and I hadn't come down yet. I live in Ontario. Monday I don't think you came to class, because of..." Gilberts voice trailed off, not wanting to mention the accident.
Just then the waitress came with their food. She gave Anne and Gilbert theirs and placed Diana's and Fred's at their seats.
"Well, I'm also taking Old English Lit., Creative Writing and Nineteenth Century Fiction," Anne replied ignoring the accident implication. She was, to her surprize, enjoying her time with this handsom Gilbert Blythe, and she didn't want the accident to mess it up.
"Anne," Gilbert stammered, dipping a fry into the pile of ketchup he just poured.
"Yes?"
"Would you care to go out to a movie after dinner?"
"I would love too," she smiled, and dug into her food.
Gilbert grinned and went back to his meal.

Anne and Gil had a delightful chat as they drove to the movie theater, Anne almost hated to go in and see the movie, that meant the conversation must stop.
After stopping for popcorn, they settled into their seats just as the previews began. The movie showing was "The Legend of Bagger Vance." Anne had been wanting to see it, but all she could really thinking about during the film was how Matt Damon wasn't half as attractive as Gilbert--dark hair is so much more stylish. Anne had a very hard time keeping up with the story line, she felt every move Gil made. When he shifted in his seat, reached for popcorn, laughed...being so close to him gave her a wonderful feeling, a feeling that she could not quite understand. As the movie ended, they slowly rose from their seats and exited the theater.
"Ah, it is such a lovely night, isn't is?" Anne sighed.
"It certainly is," Gil said with a twinkle in his eyes at the sight of the beautiful red head's statement as she breathed in the sweet night air.
"Would you like to take a walk?" The pair walked along in the moonlight, and were lost in conversation before they knew it. As they reached Anne's apartment, Gil softly said, "I had a wonderful time tonight," and he leaned close and held her in a close, friendly embrace.
"So did I," Anne said as her heart began to beat faster, her words were muffled against his shirt. They said their goodnights and Anne hurried into her building.
Anne retreated to her bedroom, darting past Fred and Diana curled up on the couch watching a movie, and peered out her window just in time to catch a glimpse of Gil walking away.
As his figure vanished, she closed her eyes and collapsed on her bed with a sigh.

Valancy
The next morning Anne woke with a start. Im late... AGAIN! she said as she rolled out of her bed with an echoing thud. Ouch.
Anne? came Dianas muffled voice from her pillow. What on earth are you doing?
Im late again Diana. AGAIN?! Can you believe it? Hey, why arent you in class Di? Its already 9:30, Anne said with a frown.
Anne. Im not up because its Saturday. Diana pulled her covers over her nose to hide her grinning face as Anne groaned on the floor, hiding her face with her hands. Finally, unable to contain herself, Diana burst into laughter, soon to be joined by Anne.
Diana, will I ever improve? Anne said still giggling. I thought youd be a good influence on me, but Im just hopeless, arent I?
Pretty much Anne, Diana said with a sarcastic smile as she slid off her bed and threw her arms around her best friend.
Anne, thanks so much for coming with me last night. I had such a lovely time, Diana said with a sigh.
Does that mean your evening went well? Anne asked with a sly smile.
Silence ensued. Di? Anne questioned with an added poke.
Huh? started Diana. I just asked you how your evening went? Anne repeated.
Just wonderfully, Diana said with a second sigh. Fred is just perfect. He even asked me if I would consider seeing him again! Can you believe it? I cant believe he had any doubt in the world about it, Diana completed in one breath.
A few moments of silence passed as Diana stared into space with her arms clasped around her knees. Anne, how was your night? It wasnt too awful, was it? Diana asked as she realized she was doing all the talking in a strangely unusual scenario.
It wasnt bad at all Diana. In fact, Gilbert Blythe and I got along very well, Anne said shortly.
Anne reflected, though she had always told Diana her deepest feelings, secrets and imaginings, she wanted to keep the way she felt about Gilbert Blythe for herself. She replayed the directness when he looked in her eyes, his slightly sarcastic humor, and his casual embrace over and over again in her mind. Why was Gilbert Blythe still running around in her head, she pondered silently? Anne reflected on the fact that she had convinced herself she was in love before, and her expectations had been shattered. Maybe Gilbert Blythe was cut from the same cloth she thought cynically as the scenes replayed once more. Puzzled, Annes forehead furrowed as she rested her head on her knees.
Hey Anne? It wasnt all that bad was it? Im so sorry I made you go if you had such a bad time, Diana apologized as she watched Annes face changing.
Oh, Diana, I didnt have a bad time. I rather enjoyed myself, Anne said cheerily as she stood up, pulling Diana with her. Lets get some breakfast and call Ruby and Jane, and see if theyd like to go shopping with us today. How does that sound for an adventure?
Sure Anne, said Diana trying not to sound crestfallen. Anne must have had an awful time, Diana thought to herself sadly.

"Smoking or non-smoking?" The waitress asked Diana, who was leading the group into the Golden Griddle.
"Non-smoking," Diana replied, " and there's four of us".
"Five!" A voice behind them hollered. The four of them turned around, to find Josie Pye standing there, grinning wearing a low cut shirt that looked 2 sizes too small, and jeans that looked as if they were painted on.
"Okay, five it is," the waitress smiled and turned to lead them to there table.
"So how's it going guys?" Josie asking cheerfully.
"Good," they all replied in a dull unison. Anne turned her head to Diana and rolled her eyes. Diana giggled.
"I'm great," Josie continued, ignoring the obvious lack of enthusiasm. "I'm suppose to be meeting Gil, across the street at The Plum Pluff Cafe to work on our art history project, but I got here a bit early. Luckly, I saw you guys here, eh?" Josie said.
"We're lucky alright," Anne said under her breath.
"Oh, I'm so excited about this class, I mean it's SO interesting, oh do you guys like my new shirt? I hope Gil likes it, it's his favourite colour you know, ya and we work so well together, it was like fate I tell ya that we got put together--"
"Josie, you picked your partners, and you picked Gil," Ruby interupted. Ruby and Jane had been in a few classes with Josie, and neiter of them could stand her for more than an hour or two.
"Yeah, well I knew he wanted to be my partner. Oh and the other day, my father bought me a new car, because my other one was getting all icky. Then again what do you expect after 5 years!" Josie laughed.
"So Anne," Diana chimed in, "tell us about your date last night with Gilbert."
"Oh yeah," Jane agreed.
Anne blushed, "Oh it was nothing really, we just went out to dinner, and a movie, The Legend of Bagger Vance". Anne saw Josie, shift uncomfortably in her chair.
"Oh look, there's Gil!" Josie jumped up out of her chair, ran out the door and jumped into Gil's arms.
"Darn," Diana said sarcastically, "I wanted her to stay for breakfast."
The four of them laughed, as the waitress came to take their orders.

After breakfast, the group headed to the White Oaks Mall. Anne kept thinking about that vindictive Josie, how dare she jump into Gil's arms like that. Who does she think she is, claiming Gil like that, as if he were some object, some prize. Gil like her and she knew it, and she wasn't about to let some snotty free loafer like Josie Pye get in their way.
"What do you think, Anne?" Diana's voice invaded Anne's thoughts.
"What?" Anne asked.
"The blouse, what do you think about it?" Diana asked holding a pale blue blouse up to her chest.
"Nice, I like it," Anne replied, pushing all thoughts of Josie Pye and Gilbert Blythe out of her head... for now.

"That was a lot of shopping," Diana said, collapsing onto the nearest chair. She slipped off her shoes and tossed them to the side.
Anne took all her shopping bags and brought them into her room. She had bought a lot of stuff, mostly clothes, she needed them, and it had been awhile since she last went shopping.
She put her purchases away and grabbed the book off her nightstand. It was the lastest John Grishm novel, and it was just getting interesting.
*Ring, ring* Anne reached over to the nightstand and picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"May I please speak to Anne?" The voice said.
"Gilbert, hi!" Anne recognized the soft lilt in his voice instantly. She could feel the butterflies starting to flutter in her stomach.
"Hello Anne," Gil said nervously, "how are you?"
"I'm good," she smiled to herself, "how are you?"
"Oh I'm okay, I'd be even better if you would go with me to see The Sound of Music, with me tomorrow night. It's a musical benefit put by the Canadian Cancer Society to raise money."
"Oh yes, I wanted to see that. I would love to go with you."
"Really? Great!" Gil exclaimed. "I'll pick you up around 6:30 tomorrow night okay?"
"Sure, see you then," Anne replied.
"Okay, bye Anne."
"Bye." Anne hung up the phone and smiled.

At 6:00 p.m. that Friday, Anne, was standing at her closet door, looking in with despair.
What am I going to do? she asked the air. She was alone in the apartment, Diana having gone home for the weekend. Annes anxiety about the evening was overwhelming. This, after all, was the first real date Gilbert had asked her for, and she wanted it to be perfect. There was just something about him that made Anne determined to know him better.
Finally, she was dressed, simply, in a khaki skirt and sweater. As she was touching up her makeup, there was a knock on the door. Anne took a deep breath before she answered the door. Why, why, why was her stomach doing such flip-flops?
Gilbert stood outside nervously running his fingers through his hair. When Anne opened the door, their eyes locked. It was several seconds before either remembered to speak.
Hi, they both said at the same time. They both laughed.
Come on in, said Anne. Let me just grab my purse and Ill be ready.
All right, said Gilbert. The play is just over at the Hamilton Theater so we dont have far to drive." Then, after a pause, Would you rather walk? We have time.
Anne looked thoughtfully at Gilbert. Yes, she replied. Id like that.
The September evening was warm, and Anne and Gilbert walked slowly over the short distance to the Hamilton Theater. They got so caught up in the walk and each other that once they got to the theater, they had to hurry to find their seats. The curtain lifted on the Austrian Alps, and suddenly, the hills were alive with the sound of music. It was one of Annes favorite plays, but she couldnt completely concentrate on the show; her mind kept wandering to the person on her left.
Maria and Captain Von Trapp sang the song Something Good, and the plaintive melody tugged at Annes heart. She glanced sideways at Gilbert, and blushed to discover he was looking at her. He slid his hand over to hers and left it there for the rest of the show.
When the house lights came up after the curtain call, Anne and Gilbert both stood up, shaking themselves out of a daze. Gilbert had let go of Annes hand, but she could still feel the warm pressure on her own. The butterflies were back in her stomach. They navigated through the crowd and were soon outside. Gilbert looked at his watch.
Would you like to go get something to eat, or a cup of coffee, or... he trailed off.
Well, said Anne, Im not that hungry, and every place will probably be crowded. Id rather just walk and talk. Besides, she thought, she rather liked having Gilbert all to herself.
Gilbert smiled. All right, he replied. They walked in the general direction of Annes apartment. They never seemed to get tired of talking.
After a brief lull in the conversation, Gilbert said, Anne, theres something I want to ask you. Ane nodded. Im in the University Pre-Med Society, and on October 13, we are having our Fall Formal. Id love it if youd go with me.
Anne smiled. Id really like that, Gilbert. That sounds terrific.
Gilbert said nothing. He reached for Annes hand. They walked contentedly on. When they reached Annes building, Anne looked Gilbert in the eyes and said, I had a wonderful time. I absolutely cannot wait until your Formal.
Gilbert again said nothing. Suddenly Anne realized they were moving closer to each other. Her body seemed to be moving on its own volition. Their lips met, and a thousand explosions went off in Annes body. Gilberts hands were on her waist pulling her close, her hands were in his hair. The kiss was long and intense. When they pulled apart, reluctantly, their faces remained centimeters from each other, eyes locked on each other.
Gilbert kissed her again, quickly. I have to go, he murmured, but I will see you again soon. Very soon.
With that, he was gone. Anne watched him get into his Explorer and drive away, for once in her life speechless. She was deliriously happy, but she couldnt quite squelch the one nagging though in the back of her head: Is this too good to be true?

Elizabeth & Forever_Anne
Anne was late again. She really had to get out of this habit. This time, fortunately, she didn't get into an accident in the parking lot. She had parked her rental car safely in the lot. Her escort wouldn't be ready for a few more days. She grabbed her bookbag and sprinted to class.
She turned her head to shoved her keys into her bag, when her body jolted to a stop and she fell to the ground.
"Anne!?" The familiar voice said, "I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Are you okay?" It was Gilbert.
"Oh! Wow, ha, yes I'm fine," Anne said, recovering from the shock. "I wasn't looking either."
"Anne, I know your in a hurry, but I would like to see you later if I can," Gilbert replied. "Are you free for lunch?"
"Lunch would be great," Anne answered.
"Okay, my class is done at 11:20, where do you want to meet?"
"How about under the trees across from the front doors of the Student Center?"
"Perfect, see you then." Gilbert flashed one of his brilliant smiles and was off. Anne stood there a moment smiling to herself.
"Eek! I'm late!" She ran to her class.

***

Anne sat in her English lit class staring at her blank pages. She hadn't taken a single note. This was very uncharacteristic of Anne. The only thing on her page was the date, Tuesday, September 20. September 16, our first date Anne smiled to herself.
Anne heard the shuffling of books, she looked around. Class was over, everyone was leaving. She threw her books in her bag and hurried to meet Gil.
Anne found a spot underneath a big oak tree, and sat down on the soft, lush green grass. As she unpacked her lunch, she wondered if perhaps she should wait for Gil? His class finished at 11:20, she was 10 minutes early because her class was let out at 10 after.

Gilbert's professor had kept the class longer, than 11:20. He was rambling on that he lost track of time. Gil wished he would hurry up, he didn't want to keep Anne waiting. He wanted to tell her what a wonderful time he had on Friday. He wished he hadn't rushed off like he did, but his feelings seemed so overwhelming. He had never felt that way about anyone. It was all new and confusing.
Finally the professor ended the lecture and Gil rushed out of the room, he hurried across campus to meet Anne.
"Gil!" A voice called from behind him. He turned to see Josie running toward him.
"Oh great," he mummbled.
"Gil, wait up!" Josie cried, catching up to him. "Where are you going?"
"I'm having lunch with Anne, and I'm already late." Gil replied hastily.
"Gilbert Blythe we have a history project due in a WEEK!! This isn't the time to go frolicking around. We have to get moving!" Josie cried. Josie had other motives for keeping Gilbert from his lunch date, and right now this presentation was her best weapon.
Josie grabbed Gil's arm and started pulling him in the direction of the library.
"-but Josie, I-"
Josie stopped, "Gilbert Blythe! Do you want to flunk out of school? Listen, you may have the luxury of repeating classes, but I for sure don't want to be here longer than I have to! So Come on, we don't have that much time. When we are done our presentation, you can go have lunch with whoever you want!" I'll just have to make sure that it's me, Josie grinned to herself.

Anne's stomach started to grumble. "I'm sure a little bite wouldn't hurt," she said aloud. A little bite ended up being her whole sandwich, her canned juice, her peach and her mini bag of skittles.
Anne looked at her watch, it was already 12noon. What's keeping Gilbert? She thought to herself. She started to worry. Then she started to get mad. "Well, if he thinks I'm going to wait all-"
"Anne!" It was Diana.
"Oh Diana, hi," Anne said.
"Anne, what are you doing out here?" Diana asked.
"Oh well, I, uh, it's a beautiful day Diana. I thought I would sit her and drink in the fresh air, and listen to the birds singing." Anne didn't want to tell Diana that she had been stood up, she didn't even want to admit it to herself.
"Would you mind if I joined you for a bit?" Diana asked. "My class doesn't start until 1."
"I would enjoy the company," Anne smiled.

Forever_Anne
After her class Anne walked home. Her car was still in the shop. It was suppose to be done yesterday. She hoped to have it back soon.
"Diana?" Anne called. "Are you here?"
No answer. She must have had to work. Or she went out with Fred. Anne was kind of glad though. She wanted some time alone. She was so furious at Gilbert for standing her up, and she didn't want to tell Diana about it. It was too embarrassing.
Anne shrieked and threw her books. Who does he think he is anyhow? she thought. Suddenly there was a knock at the door.
"Diana, did you forget your keys-"
It was Gilbert.
Anne could feel the anger rising again. "Can I help you MISter Blythe?"
"Anne, I came to tell you I'm sorry."
"Mr. Blythe if you think that I'm going to wait around for you, you got another think coming!" Anne fumed. "Is this a habit of yours?" she continued, "to lead girls on then stand them up?!"
"Anne it wasn't like that at all," Gil pleaded.
