How I Feel About Being a Writer

No matter what the profession, everyone, at least in one point in their lives, must write. Businessmen must write reports for their supervisors, lawyers must write reports on cases they’ve just solved, and even mathematicians must write reports on their progress or discovery they’ve made in the mathematical field. As students, we learn, throughout school, how to write, and how to improve our writing skills. This is done in preparation for our future.

Right from the beginning, I must be honest with you. I do not, and cannot, consider myself a writer. For starters, I lack the qualities required to be a good writer. My definition of a good writer is someone who is not lazy, always has an abundance of ideas and inspirations, is able to efficiently express what he or she is trying to say, and is able to arrange and develop the theme or idea of the writing effectively. In addition, a good writer is always in a ready posture to write and is able to concentrate without any distractions. Myself, on the other hand, can be said to posses almost all of the exact opposite of these qualities. Of all the essays, papers, and research papers that have come with being in high school, I believe the better of my written works would be the English class essays (at least, when compared to other writing). However, the kind of writing that was most difficult for me was the biology research paper. I remember it being the most difficult, because virtually half of the research paper contained scientific terms, which were certainly not in everyday language. The strengths of my writing, I do not yet know, though I hope to find them by the end of this course. My weaknesses are, as I mentioned in the beginning, that I lack the traits of a good writer, writing, undoubtedly an important aspect of English, is one which I could not say I favor. Nonetheless, I do love to read, and I would really like to become a good writer. I took this course, because by being here, I hope to improve my writing skills and to come to enjoy writing. I also hope to learn how to write fast, or at least as fast as other people. One of my weaknesses, which I have not mentioned, is that when we write essays in class either as class work or a test, I take too long and usually end up not finishing it. I think that some of the causes for my slow speed include my wasting too much time thinking about what to write. Mastering the skill of quickly organizing and developing ideas could perhaps help me overcome my slowness. Another negative side to my writing skill is that sometimes, I run out of the things to say. This, in effect, causes slow writing as well. Though other people could also have the same problems, it is my opinion that I get one too many writer’s blocks.

Writing is a process required in many parts of life, in forms of letters, essays, reports, or papers. And it is because of this that I wish to improve my skills as a writer. I hope that when I read this essay towards the end of the course, I will be able to talk about how my writing skills have become more advanced and how much I like to write.
