Companions

First of all let me say this. A companion is not anything like a warrior mages familiar. Familiar are more like pets or even slaves to a warrior mage. Companions are our friends, protectors, and on those days when all other forms of life in elanthia fail to impress you your companion will never let you down. Rangers get two companions. When you reached enough skill you will start with a raccoon. Once you've moved passed that level of skill and you are forced to release your raccoon into the wild then your next companion will be a wolf. I'll talk about each one of these in deatail in a moment.

The following is a list of commands you can give your companion. Keep in mind that when the companion is a baby chances are most of these commands are useless. You spend most of your time caring for your companion when they are this young, like feeding and petting. This however is how you learn your animal lore ranks so it's vital that you keep this up.

FIND (player)and Wait - Young and full-grown companions will find said player and wait there. This is a good instance of being able to track your wolf to lead you to that player. this is also a good way of using your companion to transfer items as the companion will actually wait to get an item in return before going back to their ranger.

GET (object) - Young an full grown companions can pick up objects and hold them. Neither will do this with a weapon.

DROP (object) - The companion drops the item.

HUNT - Young and full-grown wolves will go off to hunt.

HIDE - All companions seem to fail miserably.

UNHIDE - If your baby companion hides because it sees a critter this command will get it to come back out.

JUMP - The companion will attempt to jump into your arms, or if already in your arms, will jump down.

STOP - Signals a companion to stop following someone.

SLEEP - Signal to your companion and it wanders off to find a nice place to sleep. This is so you don't have to log off anymore to get rid of your companion.

To get a raccoon you must have the following:

  • You need to be 13th circle.

  • You must have at least 50 in hiding.

  • Wisdom, Intelligence and Discipline must add up to 36.

  • Perception and Scouting must add up to 70.

  • Make sure you have plenty of wild corn. It's easy to forage so no excuses. The go to Leth Derial and from the center of town, go southeast 7 times, then go gate, sw. Rub your wild corn, place it on the ground, then hide. Once you see a raccoon and trust me this may a while so keep hidden, type approach raccoon. It's possible that it may take a time or two. Once the raccoon trusts you, you have your companion. Congratulations! Now, get your raccoon and run because the hawks in the area will swoop down and carry that baby companion right away.

To get a raccoon you must have the following:

  • At least 35th circle

  • 15 in charisma

  • No debts on the mainland

  • No current companion.

  • 35 in animal lore.

  • *Note: I only had 31 in animal lore when i got my wolf. I'm not sure when it changed or if it was a bug.

The best way to get a wolf is the bottom of the ogre trail in the west wilds around cougars. Go to Arthedale and buy a fresh bottle of milk. Once you get to the bottom of the trail kneel and wait. A wolf pack will approach and when they smile at you stand and approach the pack. If you are ready the pack will leave a wolf cub.

The commands are pretty much the same for a wolf as a raccoon. As a baby they need to be petted and feed regularly. Once the wolf gets older you'll need to feed it something other than milk. Meat if perferably the diet. Simply kill a boar or cougar and then carve (critter) with knife You'll get a nice chunk of meat to feed your companion. Make sure you smeel the meat if you carry it around. If you sniff gingerly at it, that means it's okay otherwise you'll make your companion sick and it will die. Bessech the wind to preserve is agood for preserving the meat. This will help it last a little longer than usual.

Wolves are great for friendship, tracking, sending items to other players, and on the occasion a good laugh because at full grown they will pull a person out of hiding. Your wolf can find that dead friend that needs a drag but nobody knows where he or she is. Also do yourself a favor, roleplay with your wolf. Give your wolf a name, speak to your wolf, and if anyone threatens your wolf by all means protect your wolf.
