Disarming and Lockpicking
For those hunters and huntresses that prefer gold and gems to skins or pelts then being able to disarm boxes and pick locks is an essential skill. Many creatures in Elanthia drop boxes after you've killed them. Creatures like goblins may drop chests, coffers, crates ect. In order to get the riches from these boxes you must be able to disarm the traps these creatures set to keep you out of them. My first advice to you in ALWAYS remove your armor. Gloves, leather, helmets, basically all types of armor. Not only do these items hinder your disarming ability, but if you trigger the trap then your newly bought 50 plat armor set is now ruined. Your burden and wounds also interfere with the disarming ability. So drop that bundle, see your local empath, or eat a few herbs before attempting to disarm.
To disarm first type "disarm my id" this allows you to identify what type of trap it is. You may not identify it the first couple of times. Do not try to disarm the box without identifying it. Trust me identify the box first or you'll regret it. Once you've identified the type of trap mark the box by typing, "disarm my mark" this allows you to draw a picture of the type of trap on the box in case you need to know later. Marking the box also teaches mechanical lore. Lastly, type, "disarm my careful" Keep in mind some boxes may have more than one trap so read your messaging carefully.
As a Ranger, your bonus is beneficial with disarming. Make sure you to check it and spend some time in the wild if you need to. There are spells which are also beneficial to disarming such as Senses of the Tiger and Wolf Scent. Once you've managed to avoid the trap the critter set for you on the box, you must pop the lock with a lock pick. As a novice my advice to you is start out with stout lock picks. Slims always seem to break and I've never had much luck with them. You'll break tons of lock picks when your young so just keep buying stouts from the locksmith in town. Sometimes you will even find them in boxes. As your skill grows you can purchase master lock picks from traders which make the skill easier, but are also expensive which is why I suggest using stouts until you're efficient. Again, Senses of the Tiger seem to help with this skill as well so use your magic. Lastly, do yourself a favor by double checking that you have actually disarmed the box before you try to pick the lock.
Box Traps
- Acid : As you look closely, you notice a tiny hole right next to the lock which looks to be a trap of some kind.
- Bolts : You find a series of openings on the front of the Strongbox concealing the points of several wickedly barbed crossbow bolts.
- Bouncy Box : Looking into the keyhole you see what seems to be a pin lodged against the tumblers of the lock. Connected to the pin is a small shaft that runs downward into a shadow.
- Exploding : A glistening black square, surrounded by a tight ring of fibrous cord, catches your eye.
- Cyanide : The glint of silver from the tip of a dart and a slight smell of almonds catches your attention as you go over the coffer.
- Electric : You notice two silver studs right below the keyhole which look dangerously out of place there.
- Fireball : A tiny striker is cleverly concealed under the lid, set to ignite a frighteningly large vial of naphtha.
- Fleas : Imbedded in the front of the ironwood skippet is a small glass tube of milky-white opacity. Small black dots bounce inside, though the lack of transparency makes it impossible to be certain what they are.
- Frog : While checking the strongbox with a careful eye, you notice a lumpy green rune hidden inside the box near the lock.
- Gas : You notice a vial of lime green liquid just under the box's lid. The stopper is attached so that the vial will open when the top is lifted.
- Lightning : Looking closely into the keyhole, you spy what appears to be a pulsating ball with some sort of metal lacing around it. The lacing runs to meet a coin sized piece of metal near the keyhole itself.
- Mana Stealer : While checking the coffer for traps, you notice a bronze seal over the crate's lock. The seal is covered in strange runes and a glass sphere is embedded within it.
- Mime : A tiny bronze face, Fae in appearance, grins ridiculously from its place on the wooden caddy. Some sort of fatty bladder sticks out from the edges of this miniature metallic visage.
- Naptha : Searching the wooden chest carefully, you notice a small notch beside a tiny metal lever on the front. Though it's hard to see, there also appears to be a liquid-filled bladder inside the notch.
- Poison : You notice a tiny needle with a greenish discoloration on its tip hidden next to the keyhole.
- Razor : Out of the corner of your eye, you notice a glint of razor sharp steel hidden within a suspicious looking seam on the skippet.
- Sleeper : Two sets of six pinholes on either side of the oaken coffer's lock indicate that something is awry.
- Item Stealer : Right in the center of the steel coffer's front is the painted image of a small yet amazingly pretty Elf girl. Surprisingly, as you study the trap, her embossed lips purse as if offering up a kiss.
