Houses of Men
The race of Men awoke with the Rising of the Sun in the West, and eventually crossed from the East lands over the Blue Mountains into Beleriand. Here, they were met by the Elves and so named "Adan/Edain" ("Father-of-Man" in Sindarin) or "Atan/Atani" in Quenya, a name given in friendship to these "Second Born."
There are three houses of the Edain. They are, in order of their arrival to Beleriand:
The House of Beor: The First House, descendants of Beor the Old, who inhabited Dorthonion in the northern reaches of Beleriand until they were driven out of their land after the Dagor Bragollach.
The House of Haleth: The Second House, descendants of Haldad's daughter Haleth, who, circa 370 F.A., led her people (the Haladin) from East Beleriand to dwell in the Forest of Brethil, west of Doriath. The Haladin were given the land to settle upon, by the grace of Thingol of Doriath, with the stipulation that they should diligently guard the Crossings of Teiglin.
The House of Hador: The Third House, they were the descendants of Hador Lorindol, and inhabit lands of Dor-Lomin south of Hithlum, between the mountain ranges of Ered Wethrin and Ered Lomin.
All three houses are recognized as friends of the Eldar (Elves) and most have close contact with their neighboring Elven cultures. The Haladin are unique in their ties to both Nargothrond and Doriath; both cultures being in very close proximity to the forest of Brethil. And while the forest of Doriath borders Brethil, the Haladin in fact have greater interaction with those of Nargothrond, as Doriath is surrounded by the magical 'Girdle of Melian' that protects the forest from intruders or those uninvited into the realm of Thingol. However, occasional contact between the Elves of Doriath and the Haladin occurs when scouts and patrols meet in the forests surrounding--such areas as the Brithiach and Dimbar.
