| 9/22/02 What's the price of popularity??? I've often questioned the price of popularity and the misery that comes with it. I often question my own judgement and decisions I've made, but I wonder how "the popular" see themselves in all of this. In a world full of greedy and selfish people, how do you choose those with whom to have friendships? I've watched people with popularity hounded by the masses of leeches, deceived by acquiantances and used by those that just want something from them. It seems that with popularity comes a flock of disengenuous people. People that want to "see" and "know" you just come out of the woodwork. But that isn't usually the intension. It seems most are driven by the image that they can be popular if they are known as someone who knows you or is often seen with you. How to distinguish your true friends from the crowd is a real challenge. In the crowded confusion of calls and requests, I am approached by my friends with the expectation of nothing, honesty, and true discretion. Those people I can and do trust. I could give them anything, yet they ask for nothing. I ask them everything because I know I will get the truth and not hear anything otherwise. I can open myself up to them and learn in confidence. These are the people in the crowd that I truly "know" and that know me. These are the one's that I thrive to keep close. These are the one's that I hold dear. Many thanks to all my true friends in the crowd, even the popular one's... Alex |
