Kay Brightley has kindly provided this extract from the inaugural speech of Nelson Mandela, one of the great leaders of our time, as President of the Republic of South Africa in May 1994.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be talented and fabulous ? Actually who are you not to be ? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn?t serve the world. There?s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won?t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It?s not just in some of us; it?s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Church Flowers

Feb 3rd and 10th Mrs J. Bateman

Feb 17th to Mar 24th - Lent No flowers

Jo Spash

Sunday Club

We meet in the Village Hall on Sunday 3rd February at 11.00 am for activities based around the Bible story of Daniel in the lions? den.

Janet Davies and Elin Tattersall

Altar Guild

The next meeting will be in the Church on Wednesday 27th February at 2.30 pm when we will have our usual monthly clean up.

Could I ask once again that people leave flowers to be removed by those who arranged them, as containers sometimes get misplaced.

Vida Sutton

Grumbolds Ash Group

We all enjoyed our trip to the museum in Stratford Park, Stroud. The setting is just right as the building was a previous Clothier?s House built in 1600. Four of us were so intrigued we were almost left behind.

Our next outing is a trip to the Rococo Gardens in Painswick and it will take place on Friday 22nd February when we hope that the usual wonderful display of snowdrops will be in full bloom. Everyone to meet up at the Village Hall at 10.30 am.

Mrs Vera Hill (nee Palfrey)

Mrs Hill has written to thank all of those in the village who sent her cards and photographs in celebration of her 100th birthday on 3rd January. Rosemary has also circulated a copy of a letter which she wrote to her mother, Mrs Ethel Broomfield. Some further little bits of history emerged: the lettering on the Lych gate was carved by Mr Richings, and the church organ which was on the gallery used to be played by the school master Walter Bowden. If we have any budding local historians there is a gold mine here !

Village Hall news

Members of the Village Hall Management Committee have received many very positive comments from parents of children who attended the Christmas Party. The committee wishes to extend its thanks to Janet Davies and those other parishioners who gave so much of their time to make this successful.

The Village Hall Management Committee will be hosting a Quiz Night on Saturday 23rd February. The Hall will be open from 7.00 pm with the Quiz commencing at 7.30 pm. The format will be the same as last year, with teams of four paying an entry fee of £5. Teams should register their entries in advance with Ben Bennett. Late applications will be considered on the night should there be spare un-booked tables. Please bring along food and drink as required. There will be a Raffle and donations of prizes would be much appreciated.

Rural Rats

Residents of Kingscote will be well aware that brown rats frequent the village, scavenging for food and looking for cosy spots to build their nests. Whilst the local authority is committed to eliminating rats from domestic properties, they cannot achieve a permanent solution without our cooperation.

Rats like food on the ground, fresh water nearby and warm dry burrows. Compost bins are a great attraction, as are bird feeding stands and pet food stores.

Food for domestic pets should not be left outside for long periods, and one needs to think about the security of ?cat flaps? as rats are bold and intelligent creatures.

Infestation should be reported to the Cotswold District Council pest control department Tel: 01285 643 643, who have given advice on this statement. Domestic properties will be dealt with free of charge.

Church Fabric Restoration Fund Status

We began the year 2002 with a total of £32,772 in the Fabric Fund and the expectation of up to £3,900 in Gift Aid to come. Appeal 2001 raised £16,872, and we have subsequently received £4000 from the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, £3,500 from the Diocesan Board of Finance, and £570 from the Warneford Charitable Trust. We are extremely grateful for all of these generous contributions.

We have recently applied to the CDC and we are preparing an application for a Landfill Tax Credit grant. We still need to find some £20,000 which presents a big challenge but we are hopeful that we will be in a position to start work at the end of this Summer.

Mobile Police Station visit

Trade for Life

We are all aware of the wonderful bargains in the shops and mail order catalogues which result from the exploitation of third world labour. The Diocese is running a Lent appeal together with Christian Aid in order to make a political impact to achieve fairer wages for these poor people. Details are available by the church door, and the appeal commences on Ash Wednesday 13th February.

The Coronation Jubilee

This year sees the celebration of 50 years reign by Queen Elizabeth II. Whatever the press write about the royal family, no one can question the dedication which the Queen has shown to her national duties. We need to be thinking about how we as a village celebrate the event, and it is hoped that the various local groups are generating some ideas.
