THE ROYAL MARINE UNIFORM, c. 1944
"BEST" BATTLEDRESS:  RM VARDY, 46 (RM) COMMANDO, AWARDS CEREMONY, NORMANDY, FRANCE, 1944. Receiving the Military Medal (M.M.) from General Montgomery, RM Vardy is wearing the 1940 "economy" battledress jacket with the red on blue shoulder insignia "tapes" on his right sleeve.  The battledress jacket is worn secured at the neck.  The green beret is worn in "period style" --pulled far right, without being tucked behind the cap badge.    A British WWII P-37 khaki web belt (blancoed green) is worn at the waist.  [ Photograph courtesy Immperial War Museum #7931.  All Rights Reserved. ]
CPL ALAN JONES, 47 RM COMMANDO, 1944. A very interesting photograph showing a RM Commando wearing a shirt and tie with his Denison smock a very unusual combination.  It is possible this uniform may have been a "semi-walking out" uniform worn by 47 Commando when its supply LCI was sunk at Normandy, which carried its battledress, webbing, weapons and extra ammunition.  Once again, in this photograph, the correct wear of the beret (specifically for reenactors) is shown:  the beret is worn   "period", pulled far right, covering the right ear (or most of it).  [ Photograph courtesy Royal Marine Commando Association.  All Rights Reserved. ]
