PRESIDENT'S REPORT

This report will be as President's and acting Magazine Editor
Our Editor, Mike has a lot on his hands at the moment, so, as I told him when he took the job on, if he ever needed a spell, just call me, so here I am.

The magazine has not the "finesse" that it has had, as I do not have access to the equipment that Mike has.
Please feel free to dig up some info. - if you ever think there is not much in it, please help us.

By the time you read this we will have been bowling.
We have a run to Ashburton coming up, and if you have the time, come along to something different.
Also Garey is arranging a weekend's boating, plenty of activities coming up, so we'll see you there.

Not much longer to get your seatshirt order in.
PLEASE DON'T JUST WISH THAT YOU HAD DONE IT!

John Hull
PRESIDENT

Sydney Convention 2000

I have just received a letter from Pete & Wendy Bugeja in NSW telling me, among other things, how great the Aussie Rugby team is - well we shall see..

One other important issue they asked me to raise was the importance of getting your registration fee across the ditch if you are planning to attend their Convention next Easter.

They tell me that plans are well under way, and that they are getting a good response for perticipation in what will be an exciting Convention.

If you haven't considered going to Sydney, give it some thought.
There are 4, maybe 5 couples from our club going over - it's going to be great - give me a call if you want more information.

OOPS!!

A magnificent turnout of motor vehicles taking students to the Mountainview High School Ball on 22 October, at the Chateau.
But alas, Gavin Ladbrook's convertible stalled right where John Hull was waiting for his son to go in. We have photo evidence of John, in good clothes, under the bonnet.

Member's Cars

Eric Scott's MkIII Zodiac
(Big Red)

This car was bought new by a farmer in Geraldine, and although they owned a big farm, it virtually sat outside the house for the whole 12 years that they owned it.
It was then sold to another man in the same town, who only had it for a short time.
From him it went to a builder in Geraldine, who used it as a hack to tow tow his tandem trailer. He owned the car for 9 years.
This was the person from whom I bought the car in April 1986.

After owning the car for about 30 months, and thoroughly enjoying driving it, we decided that we should restore it the way we wanted it.
I appraoched Richard Findlay about the body and paintwork, and he said, "OK", so that took care of that side of things.
The motor was lifted out at 124,000 miles and was sent to Auto Engineers in Timaru for a complete overhaul.
The seats and door panels etc. were sent to Radfords in Ashburton for total restoration back to new condition.
We were lucky enough to find and buy a brand new hood lining from Ernie Sprague.

Most of the standard engine fittings were chromed, including the rocker cover, air cleaner, engine mounts, brake booster and pipes, generator, heater and oil filter cover etc.
All of the chrome work was sent to Timaru Chrome Platers for complete restoration.
A stainless steel mirror was fitted under the bonnet, and gold and silver shields and badges that record the cars history of trophies and rallies since restoration were fitted to the inner front guards.
Finally, after about 3 months hard work we took possession of our pride & joy. The only other things we changed were the standardwheels, which were replaced with 14" 12 slot Mags, which really do justice to the rest of the appearance!
Big Red's first public appearance was at the Winchester Swap Meet in 1989, and since then we have travelled from Nelson to Gore, and to most of the big classic car shows around the South Island.
Some of the best results with our car have been at the Christchurch "All Ford Day" where it has won the cup for "Best English Assembled", 3 years out of 4.
The car was also judged "Car of Convention", "Best modified MkIII", and runner up "People's Choice" at the International Convention in Christchurch 1991.
Since then Big Red has collected numerous prizes and trophies wherever it has gone, the latest being "Best Modified MkIII" at our International Convention this year, which was the largest gathering of Zephyrs in the Southern Hemisphere (149 cars)
So that all means that the workmanship that went into our car was the very best that money could buy - thanks guys!
All Big Red does these days is cruise around, and sometimes enjoy our local club outings.
