Alexandra Blossom Festival

On Saturday 6 April they were going on a months tour with Doug and Ana. Also on Saturday Dave and Mary-Ann flew home.

Every Christmas/New Year the Zephyr towed the Zephyr caravan to Alexandra for the holidays. My aunt and uncle had the same site for 30 years, and so did some of the other regular campers, so the Zephyr was well known.
Later on a campervan was purchased, so the Zephyr didnt go to Alexandra any more.
In 1997 my uncle decided to give me the Zephyr. Over a period I stripped the car outside.
One day an older gentleman was walking past and asked what colour I would paint it. I replied red and white, and he said Why not red and silver? He went on to say that his boss in 1962 bought a Mk II painted red and silver.
According to him the Mk III was due out, and Ford had some Mk IIs painted red and silver to dispose of the last few.
I then decided on red and silver.
The car was taken to Crash Repairs, taken back to bare metal, and painted in their bake oven.
Upholstery was handled by Tom Lewis and chrome plating by Chrome Platers. The bodywork was nearly rust-free with just a few minor scrapes, so it was a good example to rebuild.
Our first long run was to Alexandra at New Year 1998 to stay with my aunt and uncle so the regular campers could see the old girl again. Since then we have replaced the cross ply tyres with white wall radials and had the engine rebuilt by Auto Engineers.
We have done several long trips in recent times including trips to Christchurch, Queenstown, Ashburton, etc. It hasnt missed a beat and always attracts attention when we stop, especially down in the Queenstown area.
Tourists like to photograph her.  The car cruises nicely at 60mph in overdrive.
The Mk II will be in our family for many years to come, as we have another generation coming up, so it will be passed on.

.We received a picnic lunch pack there. Some of us walked down to the Arts Centre for a look, and others went to the Holy Grail to watch Canterbury play rugby

It was a great place to watch with a great atmosphere. Sunday night we were back at the Garden Hotel for another yummy smorgasbord meal. This was followed by the fines session and lucky number draws where every entry won a pick of the prizes off the table. Speeches were made and many stories told.

Monday morning it was very wet, with ice thrown in for good measure. This did not worry competitors too much as nothing, other than the horn symphony, was planned.
It was a most enjoyable, easy going, laid back weekend with 56 registrations.
Thanks very much to the Christchurch club for their enthusiastic friendliness and hospitality.
Already we are looking forward to the International in Invercargill in 2003, and all going to plan for the Southern Connection 2004 on the West Coast.

By the time this magazine is read the club will have a new executive committee. I would like to thank all the members who have contributed to the running of the club for the year.
We are still endeavouring to have one club run a month, so check the upcoming events.

The next event is the Show n Shine on 19 May, 9am for breakfast at Zanzibars on the Bay Hill. This will be followed by a visit to Brian Kentons property and then a run, where the judging will take place. It would be great to see some of the cars members have tucked up in hibernation out for this event. We will need numbers please. Phone the club captain or
myself.

The run around the lakes looks like it is destined for next summer now, as the days are getting shorter. Third time lucky.
Over Easter, members attended the International Convention in Brisbane and from all accounts a great time was had.
In Christchurch, 18 members and eight cars attended the Southern Connection where we all had a very relaxed weekend. Members attended from most South Island clubs and from one North Island club. The weather was great, with runs in and around Christchurch city.
I would like to congratulate the Christchurch ZZ Club and its committee for hosting a great weekend. Well done.
The next Southern connection will be hosted by Garden City Club and will be held in Westport.

Thinking that we would be smart and beat the traffic we headed off to Christchurch on the Thursday night.
Oh, how wrong can you be?
We left Timaru at 5.30pm, and by Temuka we realised that everyone else had had the same idea.
The traffic heading south to Wanaka Air Show and the Race for the Skies hillclimb was quite unbelievable, but very well behaved.
We met up with Herb and Trish Johnstone at Templeton for tea, but spent quite a few minutes just watching the traffic, bumper to bumper, heading south out of Christchurch.
Friday morning we were able to have a nice sleep-in before the weekend got started.
The day began with 26C nor-westers. We had a very relaxing morning then headed off to the venue for registration around 2pm.
By 8.30pm everyone had registered and we were at the Nog n Natter. The weekend was opened by a good old well-spun yarn with plenty of actions. Its a shame we cant print it, but as they say, actions speak louder than words.
A few speeches and a run-down of the weekend activities followed.

Saturday morning was free time, but The Palms shopping mall was visited by many, apart from a boot sale in the car park. At 1pm we headed off to the Air Force Museum where the cars were displayed while we spent a most enjoyable couple of hours checking out this superb exhibition of Air Force memorabilia, a wonderful asset for the people of
Canterbury.
On 7pm Saturday night we had a smorgasbord dinner at the Garden Hotel (the base for the weekend).
There was no shortage of good food to suit all tastes, and great company.
The entertainment was karaoke, hosted by a mature couple and their daughter.
Not many Zephyr enthusiasts give this sort of entertainment a try, but a few did threaten to.
Sunday, another nice day, we headed to the Brighton Pier, Scarborough and Lyttelton, then back into the city to park in Cranmer Square for a public display,

The story of how we became the proud owners of a Mk II Zephyr goes back to 1974.
That year  we shifted from Queenstown to Timaru and stayed with my aunt and uncle, Kath and Ron Diack, until we bought our own home.   Uncle Ron had a cream and brown (rust) 1957 Mk II Zephyr which he used to pull his caravan.
He was very proud of this car, but it was getting past its best.
Carolyn and I bought a house in Gleniti Road where we got to know the neighbours.
One neighbour, John Shelton, had a 1962 Mk II Zephyr (fawn and brown) in really tidy order which was for sale at $800 that I was keen to show to my uncle.
He negotiated the price down to $775 and bought the car.
He always joked that I would inherit the car as it always gave him loyal service.
After our son Shaun was born in 1979 my uncle told me that he had put into his will that the car went to me, or if anything had happened to me it went to Shaun.
Zephyr-Zodiac & Consul Owners Club Queensland, Australia     Easter 2002
South Canterbury members Ken and Barbara Copeland, Ron and Mavis Thompson and Dave and Mary-Ann Harkness as well as Doug Paget (joint SC/Queensland member) made up the SC contingent for the convention.
Dave and Mary-Ann were in Brisbane early to stay with their family, Ken and I stayed at Surfers Paradise for a week beforehand and had a marvellous time, even though we left a temperature of 12C at Christchurch to arrive in Brisbane to a temperature of 37C.
Ron and Mavis arrived just before the convention and stayed at Dougs place in Lawnton.
Thursday 28 March Ken and I travelled from Brisbane by train to Lawnton where all three couples left together in convoy to go to Cleveland where the convention was being held.
Doug was entering three cars - a white Mk I convertible driven by himself, a red Mk III Zephyr driven by Ron, and a blue Mk IV Zodiac driven by Ken; all of which won prizes in their classes.
The Mk I came first and won a trophy and both the Mk III and Mk IV were second.
On arrival at Cleveland after a very pleasant trip Ron and Mavis and Doug and his partner Ana Adams settled in at the Pacific Resort Motel where the venue was being held, after which we went to the Cleveland Visitors Villa Motel (not within walking distance unless you are fit, which I am not) and one I would recommend as a great place to stay.
We both went back to the Pacific and joined the other four.
Early
Good Friday morning we were woken by strong wind and teeming rain. Not a very good omen but fortunately it did stop Friday around lunch time and stayed away for the rest of the day.
The options for Friday afternoon were a boat trip to Mudlo Island or a train trip to Brisbane City. To fill up Friday afternoon Doug, Ana, Ron, Mavis, Ken and myself were going on to go on a boat ride at Redland Bay but missed the boat, although we had a lovely drive and a good look around.
The evening session was a noggin and natter followed by a lovely supper.
Saturday 30 March dawned a lovely day and with the sun shining everyone assembled at the Pacific Motel and departed in convoy in Mk order in groups of ten, each with a leader, for a road trip to Eagle Heights, an area within Mt Tamborine.
Unfortunately even leaders can get lost and take some of the group with them, including Ron, Mavis, Dave and Mary-Ann, much to everyones amusement.
It took approximately two hours to drive to Eagle Heights and everyone found their way eventually.

SC members at Brisbane: Ken & Barbara Copeland, Dave & Mary-Ann Harkness,
Mavis & Ron Thompson, Ana Adams & Doug Paget
We all arrived back at the Eagle Heights Hotel where a lovely dinner awaited us, followed by fresh fruit salad and cream, or a steamed pudding and cream.
The club really did us proud. They even had a very good singer singing all the Elvis songs.

After taking photos we departed again for Cleveland and we were all ready when the buses picked us up to take us on a trip to Brisbane for a river cruise and spit roast dinner board the Lady Brisbane while cruising on the Brisbane River for four leisurely hours looking at the lights of Brisbane. There was also a DJ should you wish to do the light fantastic.

Sunday 31 March the sky was cloudy and threatening rain for the Show and Shine at Linear Park in Cleveland, but God must have been smiling down on us as the rain stayed away until after the event which was good for the 62 cars waiting to be judged. There were three Mk I Consuls, two Mk I convertibles, five Mk Is, six Mk II utes, one Mk 2 Consul convertible, 25 Mk IIs, 15 Mk IIIs, four Mk IVs and two Ford Granadas.
We went and had a look at the Cleveland markets which we thought would be like stalls at the swap meets but found it was very commercialised and quite expensive. We got pies and suchlike for lunch and headed back to the park.
The optional activities for the afternoon were a visit to Mt Cotton Winery and rainforest gardens or a visit to Ormiston House, an historical house in Redlands.
Everyone headed back to their motels to get ready for the dinner and presentation at the Pacific Motel at 6pm. We were picked up once again by the minibus.
After a lovely smorgasbord meal followed by dessert we all settled back for the drawing of the raffles and the presentations. After everyone had once again had settled down Mary-Ann took to the floor. There was no way she was going to miss the opportunity to get back at the leader who got them lost:

"Would Kevin Christmas be upstanding.... Kevin I need an honest answer to two questions and then I will explain
1.Is your second name Warren?
2.Is your occupation a fitter and turner?

I know I have the backing of yesterdays Mk III convoy.
1. Your second name has to be Warren because of the rabbit-like trek you took us on to reach Eagle Heights Tavern.
2.Your occupation must be a fitter and turner. You fit into this club so well - a fitter; and at the roundabouts you turn wrong ways and right ways - a turner. Thus a fitter and turner. So on behalf of the Mk III convoy accept this rabbit (large chocolate rabbit) Cousin Zeph and see where it will fit and what you can turn it into.

Doug Pagets Mk I Zephyr
Mary-Ann also went on to host an auction on behalf of a childrens hospital with engine parts mounted and varnished. There was one on each of the tables and in all the trophies brought in the grand total of $500. Well done!
All in all it was a really good night with great company.
From New Zealand there were two couples from Auckland, one couple from Central Region, Merv and Pauline Hazelton, Hamilton, but who are now living at The Mount, and of course three couples from South Canterbury.
Easter Monday most people, including us,  left before the photos were taken, mainly because of the build-up of traffic. We all went back to Lawnton and had a lovely barbecue and drinks and on Tuesday morning Ron and Mavis took us to the airport to fly home.
We were welcomed by the hotel owners and provided with morning tea by the club. Buses were provided to take those who chose up the mountain to the gallery walk and around the quaint shops and for others a bus tour around Mt Tamborine, which was very informative, interesting and lovely.
