I would like to thank club members for my re-election as president. The club is
in good heart and I look forward to an exciting year. We have some new members
on the committee and we welcome them and look forward to their contribution. The Show n Shine breakfast run was a great success, with 34 members and 20 cars. We started with breakfast at Zanzibars where a presentation was made to Peter Hunter, last years club captain, of the trophy for the most valuable club member. This trophy was kindly made by Phil Rooke and it was voted on at the AGM. The trophy is to recognise attendances at meetings, runs and work done on behalf of the club. Well done Peter! Breakfast was followed by a short run to Brian and Pim Kentons new home on Kellands Hill - the property has magnificent views oveer the Canterbury Plains to the Alps. Here we were warmly welcomed with coffee and we had the opportunity to view Brians collection of vehicles including a Mk III Zodiac previously owned by Brians father. Thanks Brian for the opportunity to visit and for your hospitality. It was a convoy run from Kellands Hill to Geraldine where the cars were lined up for judging. Members enjoyed a picnic lunch there. It was pleasing to see the Zephyrs out for this event. I had some very favourable comments from the public who saw the cars on the run - in particular Bob Dukes Mk II station wagon, three Mk I and two Mk II convertibles, Mk II Ute, Mk III Zodiac station wagon plus all the Is, IIs and IIIs, but no Mk IVs this year. I have had it brought to my attention that the Alexandra Blossom Festival, which we attend in September, is not being held during our Anniversary Weekend, but will be held a week later on 28 September. This may affect some members planning. Our annual Night Rally organised by Gavin Ladbrook will be held on Saturday 29 June, leaving from Countdown Carpark at 7pm. Happy Zephyring Bob Stevens President. |

Another AGM behind us, most positions on the executive filled, and as we go to print
all positions are now filled. Thanks to Bob Duke for filling the position left vacant on the committee. I know elsewhere in this mag that there is a mention of the Show n Shine. Great to see such a good turnout as well as some surprises in the results. It is very interesting using different judges all from a car background - the way they interpret things differently. The two judges only recognised one of the cars and who owned it, so their decisions were unbiased. This year we will be ringing some of you to remind you of upcoming events. It will be quite busy as already we have most months activities under way. I will be asking our ladies for ideas so we can incorporate something on our runs for your enjoyment so get your thinking caps on - you will be asked. Keep warm John Hull Club Captain |

A very good turnout of members met at Zanzibars for Sunday breakfast - a great start
to the day, if somewhat early considering the Crusaders/Highlanders semi-final
the night before! Gold and blue balloons were hastily ripped off the letterbox on the way out the gate and thrust to the floor of the car. Perhaps next year...? However, a leisurely breakfast with pleasant company goes a long way to restoring the equilibrium. After breakfast a convoy of cars descended on Pim and Brian Kenton at their home on Kellands Hill where we admired the views, the house and the car collection which includes a Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Daimler, Jaguar and BMW motorcycle. Pim did a brave job showing us around her home and providing the hordes with tea and coffee - no mean feat with one electric jug! We thank them for their hospitality. Twenty cars travelled to Geraldine for the Show n Shine. We parked in a great spot in Kennedy Park with easy access across the bridge to the village centre. Members picnicked, shopped at a small street market, window shopped and discussed their cars and everyone elses while two members of the Tornado Rod & Custom Club performed the judging. Results were: Mk I, Ken Copeland; Mk II, Wayne Phillips; Mk III, Brian Kenton; Club car, Phil Rooke; the Mk IV and most improved car categories were not contested. |

Reg Stokes' Mk II consul |
On a cold day in April - a Thursday - I was told about a Mark II Consul owned by
Peter Hansen of Tyreland so, after a lot of negotiation (approximately two weeks)
I managed to buy it off Peter. Finding out about the car I learnt that his auntie, Miss B. Bee of Kingsdown, owned the car from new. The little old lady only took the car out on a Thursday to go into town to get her groceries, then returned it to the shed. Peter assured me that the mileage was genuine and the car had been stored for 29 years at Peter's work place. Anyway, it came with a set of new tyres and a new battery and the only thing I hated about the car was the salmon-fawn colour it was painted - the original Ford colours. So that is about the only real expense I have had with my car - painting it, which my nephew helped me with, and I have dressed it up with different items, eg Christmas tree lights and so forth. I am very proud of my Mark II because this car is the way I want it, and I believe it looks good. At one of the Zephyr meetings, sitting at the cosy bar afterwards and talking in general about my car, I mentioned that I was puzzled about the offside passenger door which wouldn't meet properly. I found out that the old lady, on one wet occasion, had left the door open so that the next Thursday when she drove out of the garage she hit the end of it with the door. A poor attempt had been made at fixing it and I learnt that one of the members, Mr Peter Hunter, had actually witnessed this happening because he was working at the farm at the time, shearing sheep, and he also confirmed that the mileage is accurate. In researching the history of my car I found, on close inspection, that the body is stamped 4.00pm 21/2/62 and I wonder if this could mean that maybe it was the last Mark II Consul produced in New Zealand, especially considering the fact I have owned other Consuls and have never seen anything stamped on them before. The other thing I have discovered is that the old lady must have used the car on the farm with the odd hay bale because when I first cleaned it I found a nest of mice in the back seat! The car's mileage is only 15,000 which has to be one of the lowest mileage cars around and, of course, if you're ever needing parts for Mark II or Mark I Consuls, come and see me because I have a shed full of them. You Zephyr boys - keep driving your Zephyrs, and I'll keep driving the Connie! |

Two guys, Roger and Ken, were down on their luck and hanging out for a cold drink
or three. After checking their pockets and finding only 50 cents, Roger came up with a brilliant strategy. "I'll take the 50 cents and show you how we can drink all day for free!" Quickly, he went into a butcher's shop and bought a single sausage, which he stuck in Ken's fly. They then went to a nearby hotel. "Two beers," said Roger to the bartender. They downed them as fast as they could and the bartender waited for the money. All of a sudden, Roger got down on his knees and began sucking the sausage hanging out of Ken's fly. "Get out of my pub, you filthy poofters ," the bartender screamed and booted them out the door. They did this all day, visiting about 16 pubs. "I just can't do this any more," Ken complained. "My knees are getting sore from kneeling down on the floor so much." "It's all right for you", Roger replied. "I lost the sausage after the third pub." |
