Winter has really struck with a vengeance with record frosts causing ice on roads in shady areas for days on end.
I suppose we will all have some story to tell about how it has affected us.
The Night Trial was postponed due to concerns over road conditions, so we decided to hold this on a later date.

I believe Ken Copeland has had a photo of his Mk4 convertible on the front page of a club magazine in England (the car looks good Ken).

I have heard that Allan Parkes' MkII Zodiac has had the paint redone on the lower half and a new rear window rubber fitted (at some expense Allan tells me).  Maybe we should show the installers the way to fit them!!!

I see Gavin Ladbrook has been busy, along with Stick Campbell working on Ruth and Stick's
camperbus getting it ready for the summer.

While driving in Timaru the other day, I came across a MkIII Zephyr convertible project (not a
club member either).   This car belongs to a panel repairer, Murray from Just Rust Repairs.  He told me what he had
changed to achieve the convertible to this stage - he has fitted 302 Cleveland V8, C4 box, Mk4 Cortina front end, struts and steering. To strengthen the body he has welded 100 x 50 mm box section steel from the front sub frame
through to the rear frame. The strengthening looked fairly substantial.  He has fitted a full roll cage in the back seat area, but tells me that it has to be removed if rear seats are installed.
The car is still at the undercoat stage but will be painted electra blue.  It will be good to see the car
finished and on the road where all Zephyrs should be DRIVEN!!

I hope the weather will be a little kinder for our next run, so please make an effort to support Peter and helpers by getting your Z cars out for these events - that is what you pay the Rego for and it keeps the oil barons in a lifestyle they are accustomed to.

Cheers.

About 1995 John Hull rang me about storing Zephyr parts from Neil Brown's garage as Neil wanted to sell his house and was living in Australia.

Neil also had a 1961 Zephyr that was for sale. We towed the Zephyr around to my place and I spent two weeks looking over it - all the parts were there on the floor to make it complete.  The car had had a new coat of paint some time ago and never been put back together.

John Hull came around with more parts to store and we had a talk about the car and price.
A deal was struck, the MkII was sold. I would put it together and have it on the road in three or four months.
Then it hit me - there are lots of 4 door MkII Zephyrs around, so what about a 2 door pillarless coupe like the factory made (I had MkI convertible window frames).

It had to be a coupe but a 1961 Facelift not a Highline. To start the ball rolling, I took the back door off, removed the centre door post and added part of an old front door to get the right size, mig welded it all together for the right look and I was sold.
Ken Copelands MkIV convertible featured on the front page of the latest UK MkIV Club magazine, and also had 2 more photos inside.

The MkIV club has members from all over the UK, and in a number of overseas countries, including Australia and NZ.
Off to see a sheet metal friend who made up the inside back panel.
It was very slow going and then he got busy and had no time at all for homers at work.  I had to find a panelbeater/sheet metal former to get the right shape for the door and back side panel.
We went to a body panel shop and they gave me a price that hit the roof!!  I then left the project for about two years.
On one club run I was talking to Colin Johnson about  panelbeaters and he had heard of a panel shop in Christchurch who worked with sheet metal and did car custom work the old way, by hand.
I rang and six months later the coupe was in Christchurch.  I went up six weeks later to have a look and all the work I had done was cut out - he said it was no good.
He then rang to say he had finished the coupe and would deliver it to Timaru.  I was very pleased with the look at first, then after looking more closely, realised it was a mess - the car went back to Christchurch.

If people had done what they said they would, the MkII would have been finished three years ago.
The coupe is in my garage awaiting final panel work and painting.  The engine bay is painted and the motor up and running - the only mechanical change is fittingg MkII original disc brakes.
I have just about all the original options for the coupe.
The car was privately imported from England and has had five owners - three never drove it, just parked it up.

It has 65,000 original miles and it was painted yellow on the outside with green and yellow seats.

When the coupe is finished, I will do an update and a thank you to all the helpers.

This Model A Ford which belongs to Finnish rally driver Juha Kankunen, is not quite what it appears to be. Theres a 250 bhp Ford  BDA under the bonnet disguised with lots of old brass bits and fake plugs.
Mated to a ZF gearbox it will pull 100km/h in first........

A man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do.

When the examination was complete, he said, "Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me."

"Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy."

"Okay," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife."

A  professor of mathematics sent a fax to his wife:

Dear Wife.  You must realise that you are now 54 years old, and I have certain  needs which you are no longer able to satisfy.
I am otherwise happy  with you as my wife, and I sincerely hope you will not be hurt or offended  to learn  that by the time you receive this, I will be at the Grand Hotel with my  18-year-old teaching assistant.
I will be  home before midnight.

When he arrived at the hotel, there was a  fax waiting for him that read as  follows:

Dear Husband: You, too, are 54 years old and by the time you receive  this, I will be at the Breakwater Hotel with the l8-year-old pool boy. Being  the brilliant mathematician that you are, you can easily appreciate  the fact that l8 goes into 54 a lot more times than 54 goes into l8.
Therefore, my dear, don't wait up.

The old bull and the young bull noticed that the farmer had left the gate
into the heifer paddock open.

"Quick quick!", said the young bull, "Let's rush down and do one!".

"No", said the old bull, "Let's walk down quietly and do the lot."
