PRESIDENT'S REPORT

If you thought about it too much, it's quite scary how quickly time goes - so let's not go there..
Over the next few weeks it's probably the quietest time of the year as far as Club events go, nevertheless, we are all sure to be very busy elsewhere.
The magazine this month, and probably for the next few issues will be a combined effort - thanks very much for the offers of help. Mike has put all the mag together, and others have supplied articles. We appreciate the help, this is what the Club is all about.
I will not go on, but may you all have a great and happy Christmas, and a very prosperous year 2000.
Why not make a resolution that you can make sure works into the new millennium.

All the very best,
John, Glenis & Boys

Kermit
Photo Ray Gomm

Ray Gomm from the UK has recently joined the club, and is the proud owner of Kermit, his Canterbury green (naturally) MkI Consul - the only one in the club in road going order at present I think.

Ray writes: "We've had Kermit since mid '98 and bought her (him) more or less in the condition you see it above. During the remainder of '98 we showed at 8 events and received a lot of acclaim. Over the 98/99 Winter I fitted a new clutch and did a full bottom end rebuild / overhaul including all new bearings and seals, followed by a Top End Recondition. I fitted a genuine 50s Ekco valve radio and changed the radio aerial from the visor mounting to a more traditional wing mounted position. As we travel reasonable distances to shows, I've also fitted a Water Temperature Gauge and an Oil Pressure Gauge in a chrome (to match my speedo fascia) auxiliary pod below the ash-tray"

Ray is an active member of the UK based Fivestars MkI club, and is webmaster of their very good website
Welcome to the club Ray - we hope to see you and Anita on some of our future club runs!

MC.

GODFREY'S GOSSIP

DOUG USSHER has made a proud appearance in the latest issue (December) of the New Zealand Classic Car magazine with a 'My Classic & I' report on the thirty-fifth anniversary of his Mark III Zephyr. BARRY GODDARD wrote the article.

I hear that ROSS DOWNING has moved to Frankton, near Queenstown, where he, fortunately, missed out on the recent floods and landslip. We are still waiting to see the Mark I convertible, which should be finally be completed soon.

BOB STEVENS says you should be very careful what you leave around the place when you have a garage sale - at his recent garage sale one of the buyers asked if BOB's boat, parked in the driveway, was for sale. Well, NO it was not - but, after some discussion a test ride was arranged and the boat too, was sold. BOB has since purchased another one.

DAVE HARKNESS has recently moved and wanted to build a garage to store his cars etc. I am told that the Timaru District Council questioned the size of the building - who would really want a warehouse in their backyard??

Believe it or not - PHIL ROOKE has acquired another Zephyr! I dare not even mention what it is, but it did come with a ute load and trailer load of extra bits and pieces. PHIL reckons he has come to the end of his purchasing - UNTIL !!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW MILLENNIUM TO YOU ALL.

Regards,

Godfrey

FIVE STAR DAY!

Quite a few weeks of planning could not have gone better for Geoff Taylor, who, with his side kick Bill Ridder arranged a bus trip through the Five Star Feed Block east of Ashburton. 18 Zephyrs met at Ashford Village, making the most of the beautiful day, including an elderly American gentleman who was a real petrol head. It was not too long before he produced photos of his cars which included MGs, Studebakers, Rolls Royce, Franklin, Ford Thunderbird, etc., a total of 18 vehicles all on the road and in use.

Back to the Tinwald Domain for some, others off to town for dinner. It was very pleasant sitting in the domain enjoying a picnic lunch.
Then it was off to the Ashburton branch of the V.C.C. where we left our cars in the caring hands of Lilley, while 42 of us boarded our bus and set off to the Feed Lot.
Jamie, Geoff Taylor's son-in-law, who is the buyer for the Five Star Beef guided us through the Feed Lot explaining what the cattle go through from arriving to leaving, how they are feed, through to how many days they are fattened etc.
Destined for the very lucrative Japanese Market the cattle are given the best of treatment so as when the meat is vacuum packed and sent off to Japan. They expect every cut to look the same. Most of us did not know what we were in for and found it very interesting indeed.

Back at the Vintage Car Club, we picked up our cars and drove a couple of hundred metres down the road to the local Hot Rod Club, where we looked over their cars and enjoyed their hospitality. While we were away, the Hot Rod Club looked over our cars and they picked out the best stock and the best modified Zephyr. Rookie's Ute took the best modified and Ron Thompson's got the best stock.

A very relaxing end to a great full on day, just about too hot at times.
A very special thanks to Geoff Taylor and his son-in-law for letting us go through Five Star, it was different and enjoyable.

Tonail MkIII
Photo John Hull

A few months ago on Sunday night TV there was a documentary on an exception Kiwi, who amongst other things hosted his own motivation business.
The fact that this chap had no legs and was still able to achieve so many things was an inspiration to many.
He also had great taste when it came to race cars - the photo above was taken at Levels Raceway in the 1997/98 season at a Pre 65 North/South Challenge.
If you can't make out the wording on the banner across the top of the windscreen it reads: "TONAILS"....

MkI  MkI

Dave Harkness recently dumped two MkIs that were surplus to requirements - but as the picture shows - one man's junk is another man's treasure.
Anyone wanting cheap MkI parts now knows who to contact!

Points to Ponder

The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end to end, some idiot would be stupid enough to try and pass them.

Just remember...if the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

If you think you're having a bad day...........

A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen, shaking frantically with what looked like a wire running from his wallet towards the electric kettle.
Thinking quickly, and intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood that was by the back door, breaking his arm in two places.
Up till that moment he had been happily listening to his Walkman........
