Another car show has been and gone - thank you to everyone.
The next all-out Club effort is the manning and womanning of the
carpark.
Peter Hunter has offered to organise the roster, so please offer to do as much as you can, and make his job
easier.
We voted to do the two weeks, so please support the Club, this is too good a money-maker to miss out on, and the more work we put in, the more we get out of
it.
This being the last magazine until February, may you all have a safe and wonderful Christmas and New Year - all the best from Glenis and
myself.

The news is all really good. Registrations have passed the magic "One Hundred" - they now stand at 103, and we know of many more still to come in. The official closing date was 30 November, but we will be accepting late registrations.
Those who have registered will be receiving notification shortly of their individual costs of attendance, which will be pretty much the same as the last International two years ago. We are also planning to provide a lot for your money, so you will all be impressed and proud of the programme and events.
The committee are now finalising things like the food, the entertainment, which will be special, the "goodies" bag, the runs, the judges, and the dozens of other things required to "make it all happen".
We are also looking at other merchandise that can be sold as part of the Convention, including very good quality polo shirts imprinted with the Convention logo, lapel or hat badges and special name badges that, we feel, will be treasured after the event.
It's all coming together with just four months to go. We will need everyone's help over the Easter weekend next year and hope you will all make yourselves available when needed.
I trust you all, together with your families and friends have a great Christmas and look forward to April 1 1999.
Cheers

International Zephyr/Zodiac Convention, Timaru, New Zealand
The Car Show at Alpine Energy Stadium hosted 148 vehicles from Dunedin to Christchurch. We were lucky with the weather, and had most of the exhibitors on site by the opening time of 10.00am. Most of our regulars attended, and there were quite a few new displays.
A number of people have suggested that to get more exhibitors attending, we should have changed the date to avoid clashing with other events, but with the previous 4 shows being on the same day, any change would probably have posed more of a problem. With so many things happening these days, it is almost impossible to avoid clashing with other events.
A very good cross-section of vehicles were displayed, and we received many good comments from entrants and spectators alike.
An average crowd attended, with people coming and going all day, and many remarked on the reasonable entrance cost.
We were a bit disappointed with the Clubs that did not reply to either of our letters asking that they consider attending, and it appears that some did not pass the information on the their members. However, there were a number of cars on display from some clubs, brought by individual members, without it being an official Club outing.
It was good to see the Zephyrs from Christchurch come down for the day, and their attendance was much appreciated. The prize for the best display went to the Renault Club, with a large number of vehicles, and an equally large model of the Eiffel Tower. The "people's choice" prize went to a very surprised and thrilled Barry Lovegrove for his Mini.

Thank you very much to everyone that helped and took part in our Club display, we had a lot of positive comments on how
strong our Club is.
Thanks also to all those that assisted us.
John Hull.
Eight Z Cars and a rather large Mk 5 took part in the run to the Opuha dam. Good weather and plenty of things to see and do made for a pleasant day out.
Boy! Where does one start this month with all the "goings on". Probably the BIGGEST is a good place..... GAREY HANIFIN has recently traded his Mark 2 Utility on a BIGGGG 1959 Chevrolet with FINNNNS and does it look something! You will all have to make a point of having a good look. It's great too that the Utility's new owner is joining the club.
Other changes include BOB STEVENS selling his Mark 3 Zodiac and ALAN PARKE selling the Mark 2 Convertible project to PHIL ROOKE. Rumour has it too that JOHN and GLENIS HULL have sold their Mark 2, with the new owner also joining the club.
Congratulations to the club whose membership is now well over 50 for the very first time. That is quite a milestone and bodes well for the 1999 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION which is now less than four months away. Our members have a grand total of nearly 100 vehicles between them - there are, of course, a few who have more than just a couple.
Did you see the front page of The Herald on Saturday 14 November - with STICK (Don Campbell) and WAYNE PHILLIPS showing off their metal, and it was not their Zephyr metal!! but it certainly was a contrast in size.
GEOFF TAYLOR has his Mark 3 Zodiac away at the painters getting a new coat of jam and, I am told there are another two Mark 3 Zodiacs almost ready to see the road again after restoration projects.
Had a look at our web site lately? It is well worth making the effort to see what is there - some great photos with more yet to be added. The number of "hits" (people who have accessed the site) is growing steadily all the time. If you cannot remember the site address try searching for "New Zealand", "Timaru", "Zephyr" (include the quotation marks)
You know you're getting older when - The gleam in your eyes now is from the sun hitting your bifocals or - you join the gym, but don't bother going....

With the Convention coming up next Easter, I guess that others like myself have an incentive to get on with that restoration project that seems to take up a lot of spare time.
Two years ago the MkIII Zodiac was advertised in this magazine, and after a 40km drive to Methven I found one complete Zodiac in tidy original condition, apart from a repaint, with 135,000 miles on the clock. It was first registered on 27th October 1965 through Hutchinson Motors Ltd, Christchurch, and has had three previous owners in the Canterbury region.
The elderly gentleman I was negotiating with assured me that the car had never been raced or rallied, so with this assurance I purchased the vehicle and cruised back to Hinds at a sedate speed of 65mph. The previous owner had unfortunately repainted the car in a bright orange H**d*n Monaro colour with a Wagner spray gun, and Zodiac looked more like a Hippie machine than a Zodiac, as bright orange doesn't suit these cars. The masking had been poorly done, and a lot of paint was in places it is not supposed to be, including wiring, windows and rubber etc. As the paint was so thick it places it had cracked and split, it was decided that the only way to restore it was to strip the body back to bare metal and start again.
This had now been done, and the car is currently in the paint shop awaiting it's new paint job.
I could always remember, some years ago a MkIII Zodiac that was in Ashburton and owned by a Mr Elder. This car was painted in a dark maroon colour and this would be the colour I would paint one if I was ever lucky even to purchase the right vehicle.
After doing some research, I discovered this colour was called Black Cherry, and Mr Elder's car had been painted on request after he had seen an English assembled Zodiac in the same colour that had come into NZ on overseas funds. Some hardened Zephyr Zodiac enthusiasts claim Black Cherry is not an original Zephyr/Zodiac colour, however, as I wanted to paint my car in an original colour, I had to do some serious research into the colours of the time to prove a point and give some peace of mind.
The research that I have done has paid off for me, and I have included a copy of all the colours and paint trim identification code letters from the MkI to the MkIV - including my Black Cherry! Although it was a Zephyr colour, it could be applied to the Zodiac on request. It is also interesting to note that metallic paint was available from 1962.
So, if you have a problem with the coice of an original colour for your Z car, refer to the charts I have enclosed. You will find Colour Services in Christchurch very helpful with colour matches and batch matching.
Well, I guess it's time to move on from this subject and set to polishing some more chrome and scrubbing the seats in readiness for the refit.
Bill Ridder from the Hinds Mobil garage is currently restoring a MkII Zephyr that he has owned for 30 years, and another MkIII Zodiac has arrived in the district for restoration.
Hope to catch up with you all soon,
Cheers,
Geoff Taylor

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip.
After a good meal and a bottle of wine they lay down for the night, and went to sleep.
Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.
"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."
Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."
"What does that tell you?"
Watson pondered for a minute, and thought he saw a chance to impress his astute colleague......
"Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.
Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo.
Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three.
Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant.
Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.
What does it tell you Holmes?"
Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke.....
"Watson you dickhead - some bastard has stolen our tent."
The Missing Dollar
Three men went to a motel and were given a room for $30.00, so each stumped up
$10.00.
Then the man at the desk realised the room cost only $25.00 so he sent the bellhop along with $5.00 change.
The bellhop couldn't figure out how to split the $5.00 between three so he gave each one $1.00 and kept the other $2.00.
That left the three each paying $9.00 for a total of $27.00.
The bellhop's $2.00 makes $29.00.
Where is the other dollar?
Sure glad our club finances are better managed than this!!!!
