RAISED BED GARDENING
Raised Bed Gardening. If you haven't tried one of these, you need to. Raised beds are easy to make, they take up very little room, (generally 4' x 8' ) and are extremely rewarding. They are easy to maintain and easy to harvest. Raised beds can and will produce enormous amounts of vegetables. You can start planting earlier in the spring because the soil temperature in the bed is warmer than the ground temperature. And if you use a frame like the one in the picture below, you can drape some clear plastic over it in the early spring and use it like a greenhouse and start your garden vegetables even earlier than normal. Which means that you can have the earliest tomatoes in the neighborhood. Which I always like to do. It's fun to tell people in late May that I am eating fresh home grown tomatoes. Watch the expression on their faces. Most have just planted tomatoes by mid May. If you want a very rewarding and fun hobby, try raised bed gardening.
Things I like about raised bed gardening. 1) Easy to maintain. 2) Easy to harvest. 3) Easier to protect against criters: deer, rabbits, mice, crows, coons, groundhogs, etc... 4) You can get the soil in great shape. 5) Easier to water. ( Raised beds are usually closer to your house.* 6) Produce superior vegetables. 7) Tomatoes have less problems. ( Water can drain better) That means less bottom end rot and other fungus related problems. 8) Can start your plants earlier. Soil is warmer, which is the key to getting your plants really growing. 9) Can use as a greenhouse. 10) You can put it in the most ideal place in the yard for sun and accessability. These are just a few of the things I like about raised bed gardening. I like this one so much that I will be building more next year. I'm sure once you've tried one you will like it.
