MOVIN' ROUND - CONTEMPORARY INDIGENOUS ART OF THE CENTRAL WEST

My Mob Movin’ Round by Georgina Moran - oil on canvas, 2005 This important exhibition is the first ever survey of contemporary Aboriginal art from the Central West of NSW. Indigenous Curator Jody Chester was commissioned by Orange Regional Gallery to put together a show by significant Aboriginal artists associated with the region. Most are Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi people. All live or have spent time in the area. Many have reputations well beyond it. THE SHIRLEY HANNAN NATIONAL PORTRAIT PRIZE

With a major prize of $12,000 on offer, more than 100 entries have been received from across Australia for the 2005 Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award which focuses on realistic depiction of a living person. Thirty four finalists have been selected for the exhibition which will be opened by outgoing Director of Albury Regional Gallery, Audray Banfield. Stolen on tour by the Sydney Theatre CoSTOLEN ON TOUR FROM THE SYDNEY THEATRE CO

Sydney Theatre Company Education presents Jane Harrison's award-winning and moving Stolen, directed by Wayne Blair. First produced in 1998 and widely performed across Australia, Stolen is the story of five young Aboriginal children forcibly removed from their families. FEHVA - 48 HOURS OF VISUAL ARTS
1 - 3 July, Byron Bay

Three days of celebration, contemplation and debate on the nature and potential of art practice for the visual arts community and its audience. Regional, national and international guest speakers including Heri Dono, celebrated Indonesian multi-media artist, Agung Rai, director of the ARMA Museum of Art Ubud, Bali and Elizabeth Ann Macgregor Director, Museum of Contemporary Art. The program includes panel discussions and interviews; a Great Debate; workshops with artists-in-residence Lindy Lee, Janet Laurence and Judy Watson; on-screen presentations and artist interviews and an Art Auction featuring local artists on 2 July. The Postcard Show has become one of Grafton Regional Gallery's signature exhibitions. Held every 2 years, it is a major fundraising event for the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award. Dozens of small works by local and national artists are offered for sale by silent auction, with reserve prices of only $20. The artists have generously donated their work to support the gallery. FEDERAL BUDGET NEWS FOR REGIONAL ARTS
Highlights for Regional Arts from the recent 2004-2005 Federal Budget include:
An increase in the Regional Arts Fund of $5.4m, over four years, including funds for the continuation of the Creative Volunteering - No Limits regional volunteer training program. (Total commitment of $16.1m for four years).
An increase of $2m per annum to the national performing arts touring program, Playing Australia. (Total commitment of $5.8m for 2005-2006)
$1.9m for the Visions of Australian touring exhibitions program in 2005-2006.
$1.5m for the Festivals Australia program in 2005-2006 with an additional $500,000 to be provided in the 2005-2006 Budget to extend the program to support artists' residencies in regional areas.
$250,000 for the Contemporary Music Touring Program in 2005-2006.
An increase of $500,000 for the construction of the Slim Dustry Heritage Centre in Kempsey. (Total commitment of $1.5m)
Ongoing support for The Bundanon Trust's "living arts centre" near Nowra of $1m per annum.
$240,000 to Collections Australia Network (formerly Australian Museums & Galleries On-line)
$800,000 over four years from 2005-2006 for the Community Heritage Grants Program.
$500,000 for the National Gallery of Australia's Travelling Exhibitions program.
$6.9m over three years from 2005-2006 to the Australian Film Commission's Screen Culture Initiative which includes the Big Screen regional touring film festival.
$54.4m over three years to continue the ABC's Regional and Local Programming initiative.

Meg LarkinMEG LARKIN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF REGIONAL ARTS AUSTRALIA
The Chair of Regional Arts NSW, Meg Larkin, has been elected President of Regonal Arts Australia (RAA) for a term of one year commencing on 9 May 2005. RAA is the peak national agency for the development of the arts across regional Australia. Its members are the major regional arts agencies operating in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. $1.9M ARTS ACCESS PROGRAM TRAVELS TO SOUTH EAST NSW

Arts Access is a 3 year, $1.9m strategy to enhance the valuing of the arts in schools by providing access to quality arts experiences for students and teachers. Funded by the NSW Ministry for the Arts and conducted in partnership with the Dept of Education, in 2005 the program is focussing on the South East. In May, 34 talented Aboriginal students participated in an intensive performing arts camp with professional artists in Tuross Head (near Moruya). In June and August tours of performances by professional companies will come to Nowra, Moruya, Wollongong, Bega, Cooma and Goulburn, with subsidised tickets and travel assistance for students. The Sydney Theatre Company will present Stolen (see above) and Legs on the Wall will present Four on the Floor. Arts Access will also be providing work placements for three high school teachers in professional arts venues later in the year. RAA NATIONAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM KICKS OFF IN GUNNEDAH
Regional Arts Australia launched its 2005 national community consultation program with a public meeting in Gunnedah on 16 May. The program will involve a series of 12 meetings around the country in a diversity of Australian regional communities - large and small, coastal and land-bound, rural and remote - over the next two months. Community members are invited to discuss the role of the arts in building happier and healthier regional and rural communities and to help create a vision for the future of the cultural landscape in regional Australia. The results will be used to develop a three year plan for the nation's peak regional arts agency, Regional Arts Australia. [More]

"How are we going? Directions for the arts in The Creative Age"CRACK MINDS TO CRUNCH CREATVITY | CULTURE CONUNDRUMS
All over the world, the arts are making a case for their social importance and economic value in this new-post-industrial,information-driven,global-marketplace-age. But does the evidence support the claims? And which policies and what infrastructure will support cultural development in this “Creative Age”? These and other questions are to be addressed by stellar line-up of speakers now confirmed at “How are we going?”, a one day forum at the Byron Bay Writers Festival on 4 August. Featuring an array of great Australian and international thinkers, with many more still to be confirmed, the Forum promises a stimulating and entertaining day of discussion and debate on some vital topics for the arts and cultural development in Australia. NSW REGIONAL ARTS FUND 2006 - MORE FUNDS, MORE ACCESSIBLE
Applications for the Regional Arts Fund in NSW are now open, with opportunities for regional communities to access funds for arts and cultural projects starting in 2006. This year the Fund is even more accessible with a special new category - Emerging Projeccts - aimed at applicants who have either never applied or who have previously been unsuccessful. The new category is the result of an announcement of an increase in the Fund by the Minister for the Arts & Sport last year to target areas that have not previously accessed the Fund, particularly remote, isolated, disadvantaged and Indigenous communities. Unlike the other categories - New Initiatives, Partnerships and Residencies & Mentorships - applicants for the Emerging Projects category do not have to submit a full proposal. VAN - ARTISTS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE - STARTS UP IN THE NORTH
1 July, Byron Bay
Arts Northern Rivers will launch the Visual Arts Network (VAN) - a major new professional development program for local artists - at FEHVA (Forty Eight Hours of Visual Arts - see above) on 1 July in Byron Bay. The first VAN initiative will be a session at FEHVA where three curators will discuss how they go about exhibition programming and the curatorial process. They are:

Russell Storer, from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and
Julie Ewington, Head of Australian Art at Queensland Art Gallery.

MACKAY THE VENUE FOR 2006 RAA NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Regional Arts Australia has announced its fifth national conference - The Pacific Edge - will be held on the Queensland coast in Mackay from 14 to 17 September 2006. Over 750 delegates are expected to attend the event, making it the largest regional arts conference in Australia. The Pacific Edge will explore the artistic and cultural connections between Australia and the Pacific region and will consider current themes affecting regional communities including the great Australia cultural traditions associated with the reef, the ocean and the beach. CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN RURAL & REMOTE AREAS - NEW INTERNATIONAL NETWORK SEEKS EXAMPLES OF WORK
Regional Arts NSW is a founding member of new international network of groups with an interest in the sustainable development of creative/cultural industries in rural and remote regions, with other members from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and Cornwall in the UK, and Montana and New England in the USA. The network aims to identify best practice models, partnerships and strategies that work to support development in regional, rural and remote areas, starting with any research, existing strategies and best practice projects or programs. We would welcome any assistance you could provide.

Portrait of  Young Woman, 1873, John William LindtAUSTRALIAN ABORIGINALS - JOHN WILLIAM LINDT COLLECTION
Until 3 July, Grafton

37 photographs of Aboriginal people by John William Lindt presented to the Grafton Regional Gallery last year by Sam and Janet Cullen. The gift was given in the spirit of community, in recognition of the importance of these photographs being returned to their keeping place - the Clarence Valley. The Gallery stands on the traditional custodial land of the many people in the photographs. The beautiful portraits, though posed, convey a unique insight into the lives of Aboriginal peoples in the Grafton area in the 1800s. John William Lindt took great care in portraying his subjects from childhood, maturity and old age, and clearly tried to show Aborigines as they lived before European contact. ARTSCAPE: THE NATURE OF SCULPTURE

2005 IAN POTTER MUSIC COMMISSIONS
A biennial national program conducted by the Trustees of The Ian Potter Cultural Trust to support the composition of new Australian music. Performance of the new work is an essential feature of each Commission. For the first time in 2005, the Commissions will award an Ian Potter Fellowship under each of two categories: 1. Fellowship for an Established Composer - An award of up to $80,000 for the creation of a substantial body, or portfolio, of work over two years and 2.

WRITE NOW! NATIONAL YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS' COMPETITION
Writers aged between 18 and 30 are invited to submit a short play to Write Now! for the chance to have their work transformed from a script to a full production with the support of some of Australia's finest advisors and playwrights. Ten finalists receive workshops and play readings, with the three winning plays going on for further development with industry professionals, culminating in the anticipated Top Shorts season in December at The Old Fitzroy Hotel Theatre, Woolloomooloo (Sydney). CITY OF PERTH ART PRIZE
A new biennial prize to be launched in November 2005. Professional and emerging practitioners are invited to enter contemporary two-dimensional works in any media. THE RANAMOK GLASS PRIZE 2005
Arguably one of the best-kept secrets on the international contemporary glass scene, this $10,000 prize is now in its ninth year.
