INDONESIA for Archive
Background
· Indonesia is one of the archipelago countries. It has
more than 13.000 islands and more than 40 % of the area are waters.
The biggest islands are Borneo, Papua, Celebes and Sumatra.
· It is also located near the equator line. So we like to call
ourselves “pearl of the horizon”. And because of this location we only
have tropical seasons, dry and rainy season with the temperature normally
30 – 32 Celsius degrees.
· Being archipelago country means having many dialects as well.
We can say there are more than 300 dialects existing and used in Indonesia
until now. But fortunately we can also communicate to each other in our
national language, Bahasa Indonesia.
· At the moment the population living in Indonesia is more than
200 millions of people. Most of the population live in Java and among them,
15 millions live in Jakarta, the capital city.
Church Situation
· There are more than 300 synods registered at the Council of
Churches in Indonesia until now. Most of the churches are formed by their
ethnicity and their traditions shaped by the missionaries coming from Netherlands
and Germany.
· Although there are many churches and denominations are existing
in Indonesia, the awareness of being united as a church has been an issue
among the church leaders all this time. For this an ecumenical date is
set to celebrate the union of churches in Indonesia by exchanging the liturgy
and also the clergy among churches.
· There are more than 100 seminaries growing in Indonesia. Yet
only less than 20 of the seminaries carry out the ecumenical issues and
subjects. Most of the seminaries were founded by evangelical churches to
provide their needs in evangelizations.
Jakarta Theological Seminary
· This is the oldest seminary in Indonesia still existing. It
was founded on 1934 to provide the needs of local pastors and to prepare
the independence of local churches which at the time were really depending
to the Netherlanders.
· Until now there are more than 1000 graduates have been produced
from the seminary. Many of them have become leaders in churches and
other theological institutions as well as leading theologians in the country.
· The library itself was set up in 1934 and until now it has
more than 56.000 volumes of books with more than 33.000 titles of books.
There are more than 100 titles journals still subscribed. Now the collections
are also extended to multi media collections such as cassettes, CD and
VCD, DVD and VHS. The library is also making clippings and collecting the
papers of the courses and seminars held in the seminary.
· Yet, being 70 years old, the seminary has not set up an archive
center. The center which have been set up are centers for Christian Education
which become the center to help the Christian teachers and Sunday school
teachers of the churches in Jakarta to design their program. Beside that
there is also center for liturgy which keeps all kind of collections including
musical instruments to develop the liturgical studies.
· At the moment a proposal has been made to set up an archive
center of the churches in Indonesia. This project will be lead by the church
historian in the seminary, helped by the librarian and other volunteers.
Duta Wacana Christian University
The Duta Wacana United Theological College was founded as a union and
ecumenical college in 1962 to cover to the needs of the Indonesian Churches.
The college or seminary was supported by 12 synodes of churches in Indonesia
with the seeds of books about 5000 voloumes.
The need forexpending mission on education with a broader seculer faculties
was taken into consideration and in 1985 the Duta Wacana UTC was develop
and founded to became a Christian University. At present the formerDuta
Wacana United Theological College has became Faculty of Theology in side
by side with other four faculties. Namely Faculties of Economics, Biology,
Architecture, and Computer Science.
The Duta Wacana UTC/Christian University is located and set in the
‘heart” of Sultanate City of Yogyakarta with various access to surrounding
the vold state University of Gajah Mada, the State Institute of Islamic
Studies, the State Institude of Arts and Music, and hundred other private
colleges.
Duta Wacana UTC/Christian University is an ideal and suited Christian higher institution for study, research, and encountering with other living faiths and ideologies on mutual basic of dialogue. The University offers cources leading to BSc., BComp., B.Arch, BD, M.Th. and D.Th. formal degrees.
The Library
The library is housed in a two studies building to accommodate two
floors of stacks of materials. It includes a computer section, online catalogue
(OPAC), CD-ROM and Internet sections, spacious reading rooms, a serial
section, a reference section and a rare collections section.
Staff: The library is managed by a qualified staff of 10 peoples, including
a theological librarian and an Information Technician Expert, circulatation
desk staff in charge, technical services staff, and students assistants.
Holdings: The Library has a hodings of over 32.000 books for theological
studies and numbering to 16.000 books for those secular fields of studies.
The Library subscribes to about 132 titles of periodicals, 12 local, national
and regional news papers, and stores about 1225 microfiches on the World
Religious Movement of the Primal Societies, 1200 M.Div/BD thesis, 90 M.Th.
theses, and 20 Doctoral Dissertations. Materials on Mission reports and
minutes, and proceedings from the 19th. Century of the Dutch missionary
agencies such as “ Mededelingen” and “Macedonier” are preseaved for historical
researchers znd the laity. The holdings are classified and catalogued according
to the Dewey Decimal Classification (21st.ed.), and able to be accessed
through internet by visiting at Duta Wacana Website://www.ukdw.ac.id.
University Archives Center.
The need for establishing the University archive corner (centre) in
terms of material holdings, documentation, facilities, and also staff is
real. The university archive corner (centre) should include annual catalogues
or prospectus, programs of events such as commencements (graduations),
open days, concerts, and the like, student publications such as news sheets
(newsletters), faculty publications, histories of the seminary and the
university, newspaper clippings, and many other items, they also include
manuscript records. The records books of student organizations are interesting
historically. The official records of the various seminary/university offices
form an important part of the history of the seminary/university, they
include the register of students year by year,minutes of Governing, Board
and staff meetings, trustees reports and other official reports, correspondence
of all kinds, photos, and buildings and other plans for development, university/theological
archivist-librarian should be responsible to keep safely copies of materials
that are meant for public inspection and use.
Theological Seminary of Eastern Indonesia,
Makassar

The Theological Seminary of Eastern Indonesia in Makassar was launched
on 18 September 1948 at a temporary location in Soe, Timor. After years
of preparation it moved to Makassar in 1951. The seminary was run by trustees
set up by Majelis Kristen , (Christian Council of Churches and Mission
Boards in Eastern Indonesia) an ecumenical institution which was the predecessor
of and pioneer for the Indonesian Communion of Churches. The Christian
Council was motivated by ecumenical commitment to make visible the unity
of the churches in common worship, witness and service in Indonesia.
The seminary is supported by 19 main line Protestant churches in Eastern
Indonesia but the students come from the churches in the Western region
as well. There are 506 registered students 2001-2002 academic year (329
female, 177 male). More than 1.500 alumni work as pastors, teacher
and leaders of the churches throughout the country.
Study Programs
Following the development of our national levels of education, the
seminary began with program of a middle level college to train pastors
for the churches. The first degree theological program was opened in 1970.
It is accredited by Indonesian Department of Education and by ATESEA. A
Christian education program to train religious teachers for basic and secondary
schools was opened in 1980 as a join program with the Protestant section
of the Government Religious Affairs Department. In 1997 a post graduate
theological study was opened, with a focus on socio-historical context
as one of 10 seminaries under PERSETIA post-graduate coordination. The
seminary is also a participating school for ATESEA’s graduate theological
program (Master of Theology) and recently serves as office of the Eastern
Indonesia Area.
Facilities
The seminary campus is located in the southern part of the city of
Makassar one of the main cities in Eastern Indonesia. The campus buildings
(on 22,468 m² grounds) consist of 7 class rooms, chapel, a building
for post graduate study, 2 dormitories (for 200 students), library, office,
meeting room and 9 houses for staff.

For the last 3 years the Library has been equipped with automation
facilities and internet connections (http://svl.petra.ac.id) and
member of Indonesia Christian University Virtual Library/InCU-VL (http://incuvl.petra.ac.id)
Library holdings: Books: 20.967 volumes, 15.354 titles (text
books, reference, Indonesian, Asiana collection), magazine and journal
collection (148 titles), newspapers, thesis collection, downloaded internet
files collection, CD and VCD collection and Archive.
Christian University of Indonesia Tomohon Library
It is in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, that is eastern part of Indonesia
close by Philipine. It was founded on October 7, 1963 at that time was
belongs to the Theological Seminary . Since 1990’s the library has change
to be central library of university who has 7 Faculties departments.
The library has 1800 members (student, academic and administration
staff) with 13.800 titles of books, 25.000 volumes of books and 198 journals.
Theological Faculty is the biggest department in the university who has
90 % of the content of the library. The university is belongs to the Evangelical
Church in Minahasa or Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa (GMIM).
National Archive
· The national archive also keeps some of the archives from church
history. The archives are about church history in Indonesia during the
colonization of VOC, a trade company from Netherlands which existed before
the 16th century. Beside that there are also collections from the church
history during the colonization of the Netherlands government.
· Since the national archive is the continuation of the government
archive during the Netherlands’ colonization, the collections from the
church history kept in national archive are only collections which have
the connection with the state church at that time.
· Some of the local churches have their archive but they are
not really putting it into their concerns as archive management is not
the primary concern for Indonesian people (to make it generally said).
· The proceedings and minutes of churches and Council of Churches
in Indonesia are usually kept in the library and acknowledged as books’
collection in the library.
