The program outlived Missouri Valley Conference football by a year, succumbing to red ink in 1986. Although a former WSU professor has tried to raise scholarship funds, football is unlikely to return to Cessna Stadium anytime soon.
The Wichita Eagle reported the addition of football would require WSU to spend an additional $11 million over a 5-year period. The possibility of nonscholarship football was not discussed.
Aside from his comments in the newspaper, the athletic director [2003] said WSU fans want scholarship football. He said that even with a nonscholarship team, WSU would have to pay for an equal number of participants in women's sports.
