UOP dropped its Division I-A program following the 1995 season.

When former Drake  athletic director Lynn King arrived in Stockton, there was speculation Pacific would bring football back, competing without scholarships in the same league with Drake and the University of San Diego.  Pacific's president, however, reportedly dismissed the idea, saying nonscholarship football would be "below our tradition."

During the 1980s and 1990s Pacific had a grand total of one winning football season.
According to the
Stockton Record, King explained that any new sport should compete at the same level as Pacific's other sports.

Maybe Pacific students and alumni should be allowed to decide the future of football. These days, it's a Pacific tradition to stay home to watch other schools play on television
