According to A History of Mercer University, 1883-1953, Mercer dropped football after World War II, and the school president threatened to resign if the sport was brought back. Before coming to Mercer, the president had supposedly been fired at Auburn because the football team had a losing record.
A 2004 message on the Mercer website revealed that a committee had studied the addition of football program. It went on to say:
The group conducted a thorough evaluation, including a visit to see the program at Jacksonville University (a non scholarship program, the same as the type we were considering) and concluded at this time, due to the financial
commitment, it is not in the best interest of Mercer to implement
football. However the issue will be revisited again over the next few
years.
