| Loyola University location: Chicago conference: Horizon last football season: 1930? Loyola football, the team that earned the "Ramblers" nickname, used to play opponents from across the United States. Today, the NFL is the school's only football connection. The campus recreation center was named in memory of Loyola alumnus George Halas, Jr., son of the Chicago Bears' founder. The adjacent Halas track (built on a portion of the former stadium site) was partially funded by NFL Charities. In addition, Pro Football Hall of Famer Charles Bidwill, the late owner of the Chicago Cardinals, graduated from Loyola. The athletic director [2003] said a nonscholarhsip program had been discussed, but that Loyola decided not to add football because of costs (including those related to Title IX) and lack of facilities. He also noted few similar schools have football teams, but said Loyola remains open minded. |
