In 2005, a new football stadium for Omaha's Central High School opened on land acquired from Creighton University. The new stadium is less than a mile from the site where Creighton's football stadium used to stand.
If the new stadium had been built 20 years ago, Creighton might have a football team today.
The athletic director [2003] stated that a 1980s committee considered adding a nonscholarship football program as a way to increase male enrollment.
The committee recommended against adding a football team because of inadequate staffing and facilities. Title IX has since become an additional concern.
Meanwhile, Blue Jay soccer moved into a new facility in 2003, one of the few soccer-only venues in Division I.
Although facilities may be less of a problem today, the university is not currently considering the addition of football.
