The
Move from Nam Xiong to Guang Zhou
According to the record of the Feng family, ancestor Chi Zi was a
resident of Nam Xiong Fu. Bao Chong District, Zhu Ji Li. During the
reign of Song Du Zong AD 1260-1274, one of King’s consorts, Madam
Su was a very beautiful lady. She was greedy and lusty too. One night, she
offended the king and was punished. She was sent to isolation. She managed
to escape and ran away disguised as a beggar. All the king’s men could not
find her. The king was very angry. He sent out orders to all the provinces
and districts for her arrest. For years, there was no trace of her at all. The
minister of internal affairs reported that Su was dead and closed the case.
Bad luck fell on one rich man, Huang Zhu Wan. He had just completed his
trade mission of transporting supplies from Chuan Wan to the capital and
was having a thanks giving party at the harbor. The girl beggar hid herself
in the boat. Later, when she was found, she was well treated by Huang, who
did not know that she the ran away consort of the king. As she was so beautiful,
Huang kept her as his beloved concubine and her surname was changed to
Zhang. No one knew.
One day, Huang got mad against one of his many servants and had him
punished. The servant was Liu Zhuang. He wanted to avenge. He spread
the news that Madam Zhang was indeed Madam Su, the King’s former
consort. The news soon reached the ears of the minister of internal affairs,
who was afraid that the king might take action against him for his false
report. He covered up the case and reported that there were bandits in Zhu
Ji Li area, terrorizing the people. He applied to the king to send an army
to smash the bandits. The king assented and sent an army to be stationed
in Nan Xiong to protect the people. During Song Du Zong’s reign, the
army was much feared by the people, even more so than the bandits. When
the minister had something to cover up, the people could imagine what
damages he would bring to the people.
Fortunately, an uncle of one of the local residents was a director general
in the army in the capital. He send wards back to his home county and
advised his relatives to move out on Nan Xiong early to escape the onslaught
of the feared army.
When the news was known to the people of Zhu Ji Li, every one was frightened,
rich and poor alike. Since the people of Zhu Ji Li , all thirty five clans, had
lived peacefully together for many years, they were very friendly to each other.
The elders had meetings and more meetings. Finally, some one, our ancestor
Chi Zi, told the meeting that some Fengs were in the remote area further south
for generations and were still there. The land was vast and fertile with few people.
He suggested that all of them could move over there and stay together again as
brothers and sisters. They could join hands together and develop the new place
and turn it into a good place to live. It was agreed unanimously.
It was said that when the king was not a good king, the subjects need not be
loyal to him any more. The laws were there to be implemented justly. If the
king was blind to the laws being abused by his officers, the people would
suffer. All the ninety seven elders with good government records and those
of age, from the thirty five clans signed an appeal to the governor for permission
to move out from Zhu Ji Li, stating that they had fulfilled their duties to the
king in all aspects, such as performance as able bodies, paid all the taxes
regularly and had not broken any laws. Just because of natural calamities
and bad harvest, the people were hard hit. Yet they did not wish to leave without
permission. The new place in the south was vast and fertile and they had very
good chance to develop it and live comfortably in the future.
Approval came from the governor of Nan Xiong, stating that Luo Gui and
others totaling ninety seven families, residents of Zhu Ji Li, were migrating
from Nan Ziong to the south for better future on their own. They were not
forced to leave by any laws or rules. Order was given to all the officers
concerned that these people be allowed to pass through the gates and
check points.
This was why and how the Fengs moved from Nan Xiong to the new place
later known as Guang Zhou.
