Penguins are warmblooded birds that live in cold regions where there is a lot of food in the sea. They eat crustaceans, like shrimp and squid, that they find in the sea. Unlike most birds, penguins cannot fly. Instead, they can swim underwater in order to catch their food. Also, unlike most birds, penguins don't have feathers nor do they have wings. Instead, they have flippers that are used for swimming underwater.
When moving through the water, penguins use a kind of swimming called porpoising by alternating between swimming rapidly underwater for a short distance and then leaping out into the air and taking a breath while out of the water. Penguins can also dive very deep. Contrary to a popular myth that claims penguins can dive over 200 feet, they really can't dive more than seventy feet below sea level. The Emperor Penguin can dive a bit deeper than the average penguin, but not very much. |

Penguins have been around for a very long time. It wasn't until the nineteenth century that the mass murder of penguins started. As a result, the Great Aux went into extinction by the end of the nineteenth century. So remember, the next time you see a penguin on television, realize that penguins are real birds, not just cartoons, and lick your screen (just for the hell of it). |

Like humans, penguins have special signals that they use for mating. For example, the male and female bow to their partenrs and wave their heads before mating. Just like birds, penguins do make nests for their eggs. Certain colonies of penguins make nests in specific areas, which are known as rookeries. It takes about 35 days for Adelie penguin eggs to hatch. No oneknows, however, exactly at what parts of the year penguins lay their eggs. |
