How to Mash Potatoes
A Sonnet
by Juleigh Howard-Hobson

Instructions for mashing potatoes: You
Should clean potatoes in cold water, then
Chop them up into pieces. Four will do.
Now put some water on the boil. And when
It boils, add the chopped quarters. Check the time--
When twenty minutes pass, turn it off and
Drain the pot. The potatoes should be fine
But soft. Add butter and a drop of bland
Liquid (milk or stock),some saltthen mash. Mash
It all up: the butter, the milk (or stock)
The salt, and, of course, the potatoes. Smash
Until the lumps are gone and flavours lock.
And then, to have them at their uttermost,
Serve them hot, with two veggies, and a roast.
