Esbats are celebrations of the full moon in the name of the Goddess Diana or other Mother Goddess. There are 13 full moons in a year. When there are two full moons in a month, this is known as a "blue moon". The Moon is a symbol of the goddess as well as a source of energy. Esbats are usually smaller and less ritualistic than Sabbats, and they are often more solemn, meditative and intimate. Any moon celebration is an esbat, but full moon celebrations are the most common type.
