Get Back WBCN Acetate [September 22. 1969]

Publisher: Yellow Dog Records
Reference :YD035
Date :1993
Made In :Hungary
Quality :
Booklet & packaging :
Total duration: 76:36

This is a CD version of a tape recording made on September 22nd 1969 (by persons unknown) of a US radio DJ playing a tape of some early Glyn John’s mixes of Let It Be/Get Back tracks which were issued to some US radio stations in mid to late 1969.

NOTE: There is NO SUCH THING as a "promo acetate" of the "Get Back" album, and it WAS NOT issued to any radio station anywhere. WE GOT TO STOP PERPETUATING THIS FALSEHOOD!!!
This is a tape of Glyn Johns' reference acetate that made its way to the US, where it was played on some "underground" FM stations (the first being WKBW-FM in Buffalo, New York).
A more complete version of this same tape of the radio broadcast on WBCN-FM is on "Posters, Incense And Strobe Candles". Most of it has been edited out on this CD.

The Beatles 1962-1966
April 2, 1973 Apple Records

A retrospective of the early Beatles music, beginning with Please Please Me and running through Revolver. It was impossible to include the many hits from the 1962-1966 era on the two discs with the technology offered in 1973, therefore many tracks regarded as 'hits' are not included. Amazingly, just before the release of this and its counterpart, The Beatles 1967-70, advanced pirated copies were being sold on TV as the Alpha Omega Series vol. 1-3, and for a time Capitol countered in their advertising as offering "official releases". The US version of 1962-66 differs only in that the beginning of "Help!" has the Ken Thorne-penned untitled instrumental often mistakenly referred to as "James Bond Theme" tacked onto the beginning (it was also presented this way on the US version of Help!). "A Hard Day's Night" was issued for the first time in the US on this release. Also, on this album, tracks issued previously on singles were being released for the first time in the US in true stereo (except for "From Me To You"). Tracks 1-4 of Disc 1 are presented in mono. The first four Beatles albums are mono, therefore Tracks 6-10 on Disc 1 are the only stereo mixes of the songs available on disc.

The Beatles 1967-1970
April 2, 1973 Apple Records

A showcase of the better known songs from the band's incredibly innovative 'studio years' - Beginning with 1967's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and running through Let It Be. Also known as the 'blue album', 1967-70 is a double disc set having identical tracks lists in the UK and US versions. The original LP releases included lyrics printed on the album sleeves. Amazingly, just before the release of this and its counterpart, The Beatles 1962-66, advanced pirated copies were being sold on TV as the Alpha Omega Series vol. 1-3, and for a time Capitol countered in their advertising as offering "official releases". It is unknown why, but the version of "Hello Goodbye" included here is presented in mono on the US versions.

Rock N' Roll Music
June 11, 1976 Capitol Records

Released just after the Beatles contract with EMI expired, Rock N' Roll Music was an attempt to gather some of the band's heavier, guitar-driven tracks on one double LP set. it was widely seen as a disappointment, as many fans were awaiting the release of previously unavailable material rather than repackaged old tracks. Actually, it was somewhat new because the tracks were remixed by George Martin, and the stereo was reversed - except for "I Call Your Name" which was issued in a new mix. The album marked the first appearence of "I'm Down" in the US. John hated the cover so much that he offered a drawing to be used instead, but was turned down, and artwork by an artist named Ignacio Gomez was used instead.

Love Songs
November 19, 1977 Parlophone Records

As the title suggests, Love Songs is a double LP set which attempts to collect the greatest of the Beatles love songs, spanning their entire career. This version of "Girl" was a new remix. In 1980 the album was split into two separate releases. A different version was released in Canada on gold vinyl, with some copies including the picture book from the special releases of Let It Be.

Rarities
March 28, 1980 Capitol Records

Different from the UK release "Rarities", the US Rarities album focused on 15 songs never released in the US, or different versions of previously released tracks. Also included is the famous 'inner groove' of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which, on the original release (and in the UK only), could only be heard on record players which didn't have an auto return needle feature (which itself was somewhat of a rarity). The release of this record is interesting, as it was originally scheduled to be the same album as the UK "Rarities", but thanks to Capitol Records Director of Merchandising and Advertising Randall Davis, who felt Beatles fans were subjected to sub-standard quality albums such as Rock N' Roll Music and Love Songs, (besides the fact that only four of the songs on the UK version were unavailable in the US) intervened and put together the US version.

Live At The BBC
November 30, 1994 Capitol Records

A collection of tracks culled from 4 years of performances on various BBC radio programs, Live At The BBC is an excellent look at the lifestyle of the band during this area. Consisting two discs of skits and dialogue as well as unreleased originals and variations, the album also features incredibly detailed linear notes and rare photos. Since the BBC had only two of the many sessions starring the Beatles in its archives (one of which was incomplete), most of the tracks from Live At The BBC were taken from collectors' private collections and previously released bootlegs. The cover photo was a heavily retouched version of the original photo by Dezo Hoffman, with many building signs and markings edited out.

Anthology 2
March 19, 1996   Capitol Records

"Tonic for the soul," raves Time Magazine. Anthology 2 covers the period of Beatles music where the band was just beginning to expand their horizons, and these songs reflect the processes that the band went through to make their songs unique. Demos, experiments, outtakes, and several live performances from 1965 to 1967 make this probably the most compelling Antholgy volume.

Disc 1

  1. Real Love
As was with "Free As A Bird", "Real Love" was recorded by John as a demo on a tape recorder sitting on top of his piano around 1979. The tape was given to Paul by Yoko and he, George, and Ringo added vocals and instruments in early 1995. The original tape had tape hiss and clicking removed and was sped up to sound more upbeat. The celeste used on the intro is the same celeste used on "Because" from Abbey Road, and the harmonium used is the same one used on "We Can Work It Out".
  2. Yes It Is
A combination of takes 2 and 14 (take 14 being the eventual master) recorded during Help! sessions in under five hours, "Yes It Is" was left off of the film's soundtrack and instead used as a B-side for the "Ticket To Ride" single.
  3. I'm Down
The previously unreleased take 1, turning out "pretty darn good" in Paul's words, take 7 being the master.
  4. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
A mix of takes 1, 2, and 5 (take 9 being the master), in which take 1 breaks down early and some studio talk (including a little rhyme by John) preceding take 2, the song itself being take 5.
  5. If You've Got Trouble
Written by Paul for Ringo to sing on Help!, only one take of "If You've Got Trouble" was recorded and vocal and other overdubs were added. However, they were not happy with the song and it was scrapped, with Ringo singing "Act Naturally" for the film instead.
  6. That Means A Lot
Recorded for Help! in two takes spanning over a month apart, this is take 1 which was ultimately shelved. The song was given to singer PJ Proby and reached #24.
  7. Yesterday
With recording completed in two takes, the orchestral overdubs added to take 2, this version of "Yesterday" is the previously unreleased take 1. Paul can be heard instructing guitar chords to George, although the album's linear notes suggest George may not be playing.
  8. It's Only Love
Take 2 with a false start from take 3 preceding it, featuring only guitars and vocals (the master being take 6).
  9. I Feel Fine
Taken from the group's August 1, 1965 appearance on the Sunday night British program "Blackpool Night Out", their second and last performance.
  10. Ticket To Ride
Another track from the August 1 concert for "Blackpool Night Out".
  11. Yesterday
A third selection from their second "Blackpool Night Out" concert. This is the first ever stage performance of "Yesterday".
  12. Help!
A fourth track from the second "Blackpool Night Out" appearance.
  13. Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby
Recorded at the Beatles historic first concert at Shea Stadium in New York.
  14. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Take 1 (the master being a remake recorded nine days later) featuring the sitar, but considerably slower. This version was recorded under the name "This Bird Has Flown".
  15. I'm Looking Through You
The original recorded in nine hours and featuring vocal overdubs on a basic rhythm track, this early version is missing the chorus ("Why, tell me why...").
  16. 12-Bar Original
A favorite for bootleggers (who frequently mislabeled it "12-Bad Original"), "12-Bar Original" was an instrumental track written by all four Beatles for inclusion on Help!, only because at the time it was recorded there were not enough tracks to fill the album. John and Paul both brought several classics, however, and the song was dropped.
  17. Tomorrow Never Knows
Take 1 recorded after a three-month vacation from filming and recording, featuring the same elements as the master (take 3), but slightly different.
  18. Got To Get You Into My Life
Take 5 which is merely a shadow of the master (take 9), as it does not include some of the lyrics or vocal tracks and none of the orchestration.
  19. And Your Bird Can Sing
The unreleased take 2 (take 10 being the master), in which the band breaks out in uncontrollable giggling fits.
  20. Taxman
The full take 11, which was reduced into take 12 and issued as the master. This version features a few added lines and a different ending than the master.
  21. Eleanor Rigby (Strings Only)
Take 14, which was originally reduced to take 15 and overdubbed with Paul's vocals, this is the orchestral score written by George Martin featuring 4 violinists, 2 cellists, and 2 viola players.
  22. I'm Only Sleeping (Rehearsal)
An instrumental demo which was nearly erased from the session tape.
  23. I'm Only Sleeping (Take 1)
Recorded as one of five mono takes recorded after the master had been established, this remake of "I'm Only Sleeping" is previously unreleased.
  24. Rock And Roll Music
After completing Revolver, the Beatles performed five shows at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, two of which were recorded by NTV, a Japanese television company. This Chuck Berry cover was recorded on June 30.
  25. She's A Woman
Also taken from the Tokyo performances (during which the name Revolver was chosen for their new album) along with "Rock N' Roll Music" (see above).

Disc 2

  1. Strawberry Fields Forever (Demo Sequence)
A series of takes recorded by John on his acoustic guitar at home. Features the basic sound, the first verse, and chorus.
  2. Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 1)
Recorded during their first sessions back in the studio together in five months - and after renouncing touring forever - take 1 of "Strawberry Fields Forever" is significantly different than both the demo and the master.
  3. Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 7 & Edit Piece)
The master being an edit of takes 7 and 26 (with the first minute being take 7 and the rest take 26 slowed down slightly), this is the entire take 7 with the familiar drum track dubbed onto the end (an extended version featuring remixed vocals - notably the "cranberry sauce" sequence).
  4. Penny Lane
The third song recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions, this version of "Penny Lane" is a special Anthology mix of several takes, including several instrumental tracks which had broken down.
  5. A Day In The Life
Another Anthology mix, featuring pieces of takes 1, 2, and 6 as well as some additional unmentioned takes. Features an interesting count-in by John and the basic 32-bar count-in which was overdubbed with an orchestral score in the master before Paul's "woke up/fell out of bed" bridge.
  6. Good Morning Good Morning
The basic track (take 8) which was overdubbed with additional vocals and sound effects and eventually became the master (take 11).
  7. Only A Northern Song
A mix of takes 3, 12, and some unmarked vocals. Although recorded during Sgt. Pepper's sessions and intended for inclusion on the album, "Only A Northern Song" did not surface until 1969's Yellow Submarine.
  8. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (Takes 1 & 2)
The first takes, both of which broke down but feature some insightful studio conversation which established the direction of the song.
  9. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (Take 7)
The basic track to which all of the overdubs were added (as take 9). Features some prodding by George Martin and some remixed instrumentals near the end of the track.
  10. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
A mix specially prepared for Anthology including the best of tracks 6, 7, and 8.
  11. Within You Without You (Instrumental)
The instrumental track without vocals, including Indian instruments such as the tamboura, tabla, dilruba, and swaramandal along with an overdub recorded a week later featuring violins, cellos, and George's sitar.
  12. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
Recorded in one session, with take 9 being the master, this version is the basic take 5 with Paul's guide vocal. Overdubs were added later.
  13. You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
Recorded over a two-year period, starting in 1967 and continuing sporadically until it's release in 1970 as the b-side to "Let It Be", the original version of "You Know My Name" was over 6 minutes, later trimmed to around 4. This mix features more of the song but is not the complete track as recorded, as there are several parts on the released master not on this version.
  14. I Am The Walrus
The basic track, take 16, that was fortified with strings, vocals, and sound effects. This version features just the band and John singing, without the overdubs.
  15. The Fool On The Hill (Demo)
Recorded 3 weeks prior to the taping for Magical Mystery Tour, sounding very different from the master and without a completed set of lyrics.
  16. Your Mother Should Know
    An experimental arrangement by Paul.
  17. The Fool On The Hill (Take 4)
Closer to the demo version than the final master, take 4 of "The Fool On The Hill" still did not feature a completed set of lyrics. This version taped nearly 3 weeks after the demo was recorded.
  18. Hello Goodbye
Take 16, featuring many overdubs and extra instrumentation not used on the master, which, like this version, was overdubbed onto the basic track 14.
  19. Lady Madonna
Remixed from a different take (take 3 and 4) than the released master.
  20. Across The Universe
Recorded during the "Lady Madonna" sessions but unreleased until it appeared the WWF charity album. This is take 2, lacking several overdubs that the master featured.

Anthology 3
October 29, 1996   Capitol Records

Covering the years 1968-1970, Anthology 3 features songs written and recorded during the group's trip to India in which they completed study with the Maharishi, as well as other demos and rehearsals from The Beatles, Abbey Road, and Let It Be. Many tracks are demos recorded by the song's writer, several at George's Esher home. There is precious little material from the famed 'Get Back sessions' that could have been included rather than the special remixes, but volume 3 features an incredible look at a band at the end of their storybook careers.

Disc 1

  1. A Beginning Martin
An orchestral piece written by George Martin originally for inclusion on the White Album as an intro piece to Ringo's "Don't Pass Me By". Later used in the film "Yellow Submarine".
  2. Happiness Is A Warm Gun Lennon/McCartney
An acoustic demo recorded by John during the famous Esher sessions. Includes the 'I need a fix' and 'Mother Superior jumped the gun' sections but not the 'Happiness is a warm gun' section.
  3. Helter Skelter Lennon/McCartney
Distinctly different from the master, this version of "Helter Skelter" (take 2) is a slow, driving tune shortened to 5 minutes from over 12 minutes in its original form.
  4. Mean Mr. Mustard Lennon/McCartney
Demo recorded at Esher featuring a bridge not used in the final version.
  5. Polythene Pam Lennon/McCartney

  6. Glass Onion
Demo recorded at Esher, again, with vocal gibberish in place of unfinished lyric.
  7. Junk
Demo recorded at Esher but never recorded by the Beatles - instead apprearing on Paul's solo debut McCartney.
  8. Piggies
Demo recorded at Esher, featuring a double-tracked vocal by George and different lyrics than the released version
  9. Honey Pie
The final Esher demo presented on Anthology, with lyrics slightly different than the finished version.
  10. Don't Pass Me By
Take 5 featuring vocal and basic instrumental track, without the fiddle.

Fortified with session players (on 3 saxophones and conga drums) and scrapped in favor of a remakerecorded the following week.
  12. Good Night
A recorded rehearsal, remixed with the ending of the master (take 34), with some studio talk discussing the direction of the song.
  13. Cry Baby Cry

  14. Blackbird
Featuring Paul only on an acoustic guitar (and no bird sound effects), this is take 4, with the master being take 32.
  15. Sexy Sadie
The basic instrumental track - take 6 - fading out near the end becase it was lacking a final coda.
  16. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Demo recorded by George on his acoustic guitar and Paul on organ, featuring an additional verse not used in the master.
  17. Hey Jude
Preceeded by some studio chat, this is a simple studio rehearsal which is somewhat stripped down.
  18. Not Guilty
Although worked on for 3 days, "Not Guilty" was not included on the White Album. Presented here is take 102.
  19. Mother Nature's Son
Take 2 (the master being take 26) featuring some studio chat and a basic track.
  20. Glass Onion
Mono mix featuring some additional sound effects placed by John which were ultimately left off the master, including an closing loop of BBC soccer commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme elling, "It's a goal!", which was dropped in favor of an orchestral score written by George Martin.
  21. Rocky Raccoon
Take 8 (take 10 being the master) with some misspoken lyrics by Paul.
  22. What's The New Mary Jane
Originally conceived by John for use on the White Album, then rejected, then considered as a B-side for the Plastic Ono Band to "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)", "What's The New Mary Jane" was never issued except on bootleg discs. This is take 4, featuring John and George as well as Yoko and Mal Evans on sound effects.
  23. Step Inside Love/Los Paranoias

Featuring Billy Preston on keyboard, this version of "I've Got A Feeling" was recorded in the basement of the Beatles office building on Savile Row in London. Also filmed for use in the 'Let It Be' film.
  2. She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
Another song recorded during the Savile Row sessions, but not used on the Let It Be album, instead, later recorded for Abbey Road.
  3. Dig A Pony
A Savile Row take with the intor "All I want is...", which was later cut for the final version.
  4. Two Of Us
Another Savile Row take recorded with paul and John on vocals.
  5. For You Blue
According to the Anthology linear notes, all takes of "For You Blue" were recorded on Jan. 25, 1969, but the master featured a rerecorded vocal by George almost a year later on Jan. 8, 1970.
  6. Teddy Boy
A rehearsal for a song never issued by the Beatles, instead, used on Paul's debut McCartney. Features some intersting vocals by John.
  7. Medley: Rip It Up/Shake, Rattle, And Roll/Blue Suede Shoes
The only oldies medley of dozens rehearsed by the Beatles during Let It Be rehearsals released on Anthology, although many were later found on bootlegs
  8. The Long And Winding Road
The basic track to which Phil Spector added orchestration for the Let it Be album, to Paul's dismay. Noted as the version that 'nature intended'.
  9. Oh! Darling
Recorded during the Savile Row sesions but unissued until Abbey Road, the beginning of this rehearsal of "Oh! Darling" is faded out due to misoperation of the recording machine.
  10. All Things Must Pass
Frequently performed during Let It Be rehearsals, "All Things Must Pass" was not used on any Beatles album, rather was recorded by George for his first solo album of the same name.
  11. Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues
An obscure Buddy Holly cover which was the B-side of "Words Of Love" which was recorded by the Beatles for Beatles For Sale in 1964. One of many Holly tunes recorded during these sessions.
  12. Get Back
This version was the final number performed during the band's legendary rooftop concert on January 30, 1969. Notably, it is the final public performance by the Beatles.
  13. Old Brown Shoe
An elaborate demo recorded by George using 2 overdubs of guitar and vocals.
  14. Octopus's Garden
Take 2 with some studio chat from take 8 (the master was take 32). Written shortly after completion ofthe White Album sessions.
  15. Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Take 5, without the anvil sound effect and some additional vocals (the master was take 21 with some vocal overdubs.
  16. Something
A solo demo recorded by George, just before Joe Cocker's version (which preceded the Beatles version).
  17. Come Together
Take 1 (the master being take 9 with further overdubs) featuring John on vocal, clapping his hands and playing tamborine.
  18. Come And Get It
Recorded by Paul in less than an hour as a demo for Apple recording artists Badfinger for use as their first single. The song was a huge hit.
  19. Ain't She Sweet
Performed during recordings for "Sun King", the jam that included this version of "Ain't She Sweet" also featured two other Gene Vincent songs. Also recorded during the band's Hamburg sessions with Tony Sheridan.
  20. Because
Features the nine vocals (three each by Paul, John, and George) recorded in three separate takes, but without the instrumentation. Previously released on several bootlegs.
  21. Let It Be
This is historic as it features part of Paul's original presentation of the song to the rest of the band. Also features some remixed orchestration and studio chat by John.
  22. I Me Mine
From the band's final session, for which John was absent, which turned out "I Me Mine" as it was used on the Let It Be album.
  23. The End
A remix featuring additional guitar solos by paul, George, and John, and a more prominent orchestral piece.

Disc 1

1. Love Me Do (Lennon/McCartney)
1:46
Radio
BBC
22 Jan 1963
Recorded: Playhouse Theatre, London, 22 January, 1963. For the opening track of this splendid compilation of rare and unreleased Beatles material, we chose a long-forgotten live-in-the-studio version of the Mop Tops' first hit, last heard on the BBC Saturday Club programme for which it was originally recorded, over 37 years ago!

2. Well, Darling (Lennon/McCartney)
1:57
Pre-Beatles
May 1960
Recorded: Liverpool, May 1960. No ANTHOLOGY-Set without some more tracks from the legendary "Quarrymen" rehearsals, held in the McCartney-house at 40 Forthlin road, Allerton, Liverpool in spring 1960 (and again, from a better source-tape!)
Yes, it's Stuart Sutcliffe, who is plonking happily away on his newly-bought bass guitar on the first of these three numbers, actually more of a "jam" than a "song".

3. The One After 909 (Lennon/McCartney)
2:26
Pre-Beatles
May 1960
Recorded: Liverpool, May 1960. No ANTHOLOGY-Set without some more tracks from the legendary "Quarrymen" rehearsals, held in the McCartney-house at 40 Forthlin road, Allerton, Liverpool in spring 1960 (and again, from a better source-tape!)
THE ONE AFTER 909 can be heard twice on the "Quarrymen" tape. You probably know the acoustic version on ANTHOLOGY PLUS. Now, this is the electric One!

4. You Must Write Every Day (Lennon/McCartney)
2:31
Pre-Beatles
May 1960
Recorded: Liverpool, May 1960. No ANTHOLOGY-Set without some more tracks from the legendary "Quarrymen" rehearsals, held in the McCartney-house at 40 Forthlin road, Allerton, Liverpool in spring 1960 (and again, from a better source-tape!)
YOU MUST WRITE ME EVERYDAY, the third song featured here, is an early McCartney-"Oeuvre".
5. September In The Rain (Warren)
1:57
Decca
1 Jan 1962
SS.DEC.11.01
Recorded: Decca Studios, London, 1 January 1962. ...and one more song from the infamous Decca-audition, a 1961 US-hit for ballad-singer Dinah Washington, crooned here by Paul, but to no avail...
6. Do You Want To Know A Secret (Lennon/McCartney)
2;04
Take 7
11 Feb 1963
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 11 February 1963. From the 11-hour-marathon-session that produced the first BEATLES-album comes this 'clean' mix of DO YOU WANT TO KNOW... Take 7. There are backing-volcals throughout, a clean intro and no fade-out.

7. P.S. I Love You (Lennon/McCartney)
2:00
Radio
BBC
17 Jun 1963
Recorded: Maida Vale BBC Studio, London, 17 June 1963. A sweet version of this b-side to PLEASE PLEASE ME, recorded for and aired exclusively by the BBC on 25 June 1963, on the 4th edition of the groups' own POP GO THE BEATLES programme.

29 Jan 1964
Recorded: Pathe Marconi Studios, Paris, 29 January, 1964. You've heard a heavily edited version of this take 2 in mono on ANTHOLOGY 1. Now you'll hear it again - ony this time unedited and in STEREO!.

11. I'll Cry Instead (Lennon/McCartney)
2:06

12. Any Time At All (Lennon/McCartney)

Regular
RM3 Take 11 - US
2 Jun 1964
SS.AHDN.08.11.RM3.US
Created for Capitol. Released on "Something New" US mono LP.
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 1 & 2 June, 1964. Two songs from the A HARD DAY'S NIGHT album, presented here in rare mono-versions, released only in the USA in 1964!
The main differences are as follows: The US mono-mix of ANY TIME AT ALL has the piano mixed down low in the instrumental break.
Released on "Something New" US mono LP.

13. If I Fell (Lennon/McCartney)
1:17
Demo
1964
Recorded: John's home, London, early 1964. An excerpt from a composing-tape made by John on a cassette-recorder (hence the sound). But it is a charming nontheless to hera him play an accoustic version of one of his most beautifull ballads.

14. If I Fell (Lennon/McCartney)
2:07
Radio
BBC
14 Jul 1964
Recorded: BBC Broadcasting House, London, 14 July, 1964. ...and the Beatles treated it very well, as you can hear by listening to another unreleased "radio-only" performance. This time for the BBC TOP GEAR programme, broadcast on 16 July 1964.

15. I'm A Loser (Lennon/McCartney)
2:36
Take 3
14 Aug 1964
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 14 August, 1964. With these two songs, we find ourselves in the midst of a busy day during BEATLES FOR SALE LP-sessions. We are hearing a not-yet fully-realised take 3 of I'M A LOSER and a first go at MR. MOONLIGHT. Yes, the same version can be found on ANTHOLOGY 1 but here it is in STEREO and the sound is superior!

16. Mr Moonlight (Johnson)
2:33
Take 1

17. What You're Doing (Lennon/McCartney)
2:04
Take 11
30 Sep 1964
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 30 September 1964. Another Outtake from the BEATLES FOR SALE sessions, this is take 11, a very different arrangement with more emphasis on George's guitar-riff and interesting vocal-harmonies. (This song was clearly an influence on the Byrds' version of MR. TAMBOURINE MAN!)

18. That Means A Lot (Lennon/McCartney)
2:34
Take 1
20 Feb 1965
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 20 February (18) & 30 March, 1965 (19). ...and there were times when even got lost! This song never really made it, depite a not-so-bad take 1 (once again presented here in STEREO and in better sound-quality than on ANTHOLOGY 1!).
But over one month later the Beatles, not satisfied, got back to this song and thing got even worse! And, although there wer some good ideas, they gave up on it soon afterwards and gave the track to P.J. Proby. (The very last take (22) is on ANTHOLOGY PLUS!)

19. That Means A Lot (Lennon/McCartney)
3:23
Take 20
30 Mar 1965
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 20 February (18) & 30 March, 1965 (19). ...and there were times when even the Beatles got lost! This song never really made it, depite a not-so-bad take 1 (once again presented here in STEREO and in better sound-quality than on ANTHOLOGY 1!).

Disk2
1. She Said, She Said (Lennon/McCartney)
1:09
Demo
1966
Recorded: John's home in Weybridge, early 1966. Another excerpt from one of John's composing-tapes. Here he is working on his famous "drug" song, which at this stage consists of not more than the first verse only!

2. Strawberry Fields Forever (Lennon/McCartney)
3:09
Take 4
28 Nov 1966
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 28 November 1966. Take Four - the one that we've been waiting for! No, in earnest, we chose to include yet another version because we think that this take is an important missing link in the evolution of John's psychedelic masterpiece. It is a cross between takes 1 and 6 (the near-finished product).

3. When I'm Sixty-Four (Lennon/McCartney)
2:48
Alternate Mix
6 Dec 1966
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 6 December 1966
unused stereo-mix from late 1966, at the right speed, a semitone slower that the official' version.

4. Penny Lane (Lennon/McCartney)

Home Video stereo mix
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 7 September, 1967

8. Across The Universe (Lennon/McCartney)
3.30
Alternate Mix
4 Feb 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 4 February, 1968
In order to get it onto the abandoned GET BACK album, Producer/Engineer Glyn John mixed ACROSS THE UNIVERSE anew in early 1970. But then Phil Spector walked in...

9. Lady Madonna (Lennon/McCartney)
2:08
Alternate Mix
3 Feb 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 3 February, 1968
The LADY MADONNA-mix is a very early rough mix with no overdubs yet.

10. Hey Bulldog (Lennon/McCartney)
3:20
Alternate Mix
11 Feb 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 11 February, 1968
HEY BULLDOG was soon deleted from the orginal YELLOW SUBMARINE Film. We "rescued" this orginal 1968 mono-mix from one of the few surviving early film-copies. It comes complete with barking... Bulldogs!

11. Step Inside Love (Lennon/McCartney)
2.12
Demo
1968
original demo recorded by Paul alone in early 1968.

12. Circles (Harrison)
2:14
Esher Demo
May 1968
This harmonium-based demo comes from the accoustic WHITE ALBUM sessions, May 1968.

13. A Case Of The Blues (Lennon)
1:53
Demo
1968
A CASE OF THE BLUES, finally, is not much of a song, rather an idea for a song. But John apparently never developped it any further. Recorded late 1968.

14. Dear Prudence (Lennon/McCartney)
3:52
Alternate Mix
28-30 Aug 1968
Recorded Trident Studios, London, 28-30 August, 1968
A very good alternate mono-mix

15. Hey Jude (Lennon/McCartney)
5:54
Take 9
30 Jul 1968
The recording of this take was filmed and shown in a TV Documentary called MUSIC!

16. Revolution (Lennon/McCartney)
3:23
Backing Track
10 Jul 1968
When the Beatles made a promo-film for this song at Twickenham Studios in London on 4 September, 1968 they sang live over the pre-recorded backing-track. And this is it!

17. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (Lennon/McCartney)
2:44
Alternate Mix
3,4 Jul 1968
basically the same version as on ANTHOLOGY 3, but here is a different mix.

18. Sexy Sadie (Lennon/McCartney)
3:52
Alternate Version
13 Aug 1968
unedited and 47 seconds longer!

19. Merry Christmas 1968 (McCartney)
1:31
Xmas
Nov 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, November 1968. This is Paul's "portion" of the 1968 Beatles Christmas Fan-Club Flexi-single. An acoustic ditty he recorded on his own, presumably during a Mary Hopkin recording session.

20. Don't Let Me Down (Lennon/McCartney)
3:45
Get Back Session
22 Jan 1969
Recorded: Apple Studios, London, 22 January, 1969. When, in February 1969, Producer/Engineer Glyn John began his task to compile the ill-fated GET BACK album, he chose this earthy version of DON'T LET ME DOWN for inclusion. And a good choice it was indeed...

21. Come And Get It (McCartney)
2:29
Alternate Mix
24 Jul 1969
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 24 July, 1969. We all know this McCartney solo-demo quite well from ANTHOLOGY 3. But this is an alternate mix with more emphasis on his double-tracked vocal.

22. Octopus's Garden (Starkey)
2:49
(unidentified)
8 Dec 1969
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 8 December, 1969. Like the previous track, this is not really a Beatles-recording. But on the other hand, it is (or, rather, was) and that's why it's here!
This recording of other musicians supplying bass, lead guitar and piano to Ringo's 29 April vocal-recording and drumming was necessary because Ringo was to appear on a George Martin TV-Special and, due to musicians' union rules, everything had to be "live". And so, to complicate matters, Ringo had to sing over his pre-recorded vocal on the actual Telecast.
And why didn't the other Beatles help him? They were no longer around... (It's them making funny noises. At least those were saved!)

23. Get Back Reprise (Lennon/McCartney)
1:36
Rooftop Concert
30 Jan 1969
Recorded: Apple-Roof, 30 January, 1969. We hope that by listening to this ANTHOLOGY 2000 set, a splendid time was had by all and we say bye, bye from the Apple-roof!

Beatles 1
November 14, 2000   Capitol Records

An attempt by Capitol to release the biggest-selling album of all time, Beatles 1 features 27 singles which reached #1 in the UK's Record Retailer chart or the US's Billboard chart (or both). Each song is listed in the booklet with photos of several 45 sleeves from around the world and track info, such as which take number was issued and the date it was recorded. The album was launched simultaneously with the band's official website, www.thebeatles.com, which features even more info on each of the album's tracks, including interactive, virtual tours of the recording studio and never-before seen photos. The album is the first greatest hits package since 1982's 20 Greatest Hits and was aimed specifically at the younger, 'digital' generation in hopes of introducing the Beatles to an even larger audience.

Click on the song titles for detailed information including song backrounds, recording dates, chart positions, special notes, and much more.
