1. A Beginning (Martin) [00:50 Anthology]
22 Jul 1968
Liner notes (by Lewisohn):
"A George Martin composition that was meant to be placed as an intro for "Don't Pass Me By". "
A little mistake ?
This is actually a musical tag used early in Yellow Submarine when the Royal Liver Building clock tower is shown. It is used in both the old and new versions of the film. Was it ever intended as an introduction for "Don't Pass Me By" ? It seems dubious ... and the recording date is probably not this one ...
Lewisohn in his Complete Beatles Chronicle says that a "tinkly piano intro" for "Don't Pass Me By" was recorded this day. He doesn't speak about an orchestral score (although there was an orchestra present for the recording of "Good Night")

Oct 1962
Recorded in Liverpool during an afternoon-session at the empty Cavern Club in

9. A Taste Of Honey (Marlow/Scott) [3:27 Hamburg Performance Reconstruction]
31 Dec 1962
C.621231.03
The two Hamburg Performances of A Taste Of Honey feature many resemblances yet they are completely different.
They both feature one of the boys (John ? Ringo ?) singing "Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Baaa" before the song.
They both feature private jokes by or the audience during the song and at one time (on the unedited version) [this makes Paul laughing while singing.
However, the two versions are completely different because one of these has an extra verse that is unique on all the survived versions of the song.
This version is in fact an edit of two (or more ?) versions.
The spoken introduction by Paul is completely different than on the unedited version although some parts are common to both versions.
Star Club, Hamburg
Probably w/o extra verse

1. John Lennon Poetry Slam [03:50]

2. Yesterday (Lennon/McCartney) [02:05 Take 2 OOPSed]
14 Jun 1965
Take 2 w/o string quartet ... OOPSED ???
3. We Can Work It Out (Lennon/McCartney) [02:33]
20 Oct 1965
Liner notes: A composite mix of Paul's solo-demo (recorded, presumably at John's house, and studio takes 1 (backing track only) [and 2 (the finished master).
4. For No One (Lennon/McCartney) [01:55]
9 May 1966
Liner notes: A Work-in-progress mix of the "released version", without the horn-overdub.
5. Tomorrow Never Knows (Lennon/McCartney) [02:57]
6 Apr 1966
Liner notes: The ultimate psychedelic 'freak-out' version 1. With tape-loops and backwards guitars to the front - created by combining two long - deleted mono mixes together.
6. And Your Bird Can Sing (Lennon/McCartney) [02:15 Take 2 OOPSed]
20 Apr 1966
SS.REV.09.02.OOPS
Liner notes: This Track was released before on Anthology 2 but here it comes 'clean', without the giggles that destracts from this rather Byds-sy arrangement.
7. Strawberry Fields Forever (Lennon/McCartney) [03:10]
28 Nov 1966
Liner notes: YES.... another version of Strawberry Fields. Another interesting one as well, one which falls halfway between takes 1 and 7, both presented on Anthology 2. Another missing link in the evolution og this psychedelic masterpiece.
8. A Day In The Life (Lennon/McCartney) [04:46 RM1 Take 6]
20 Jan 1967
SS.SGT.13.06.RM1
Take 6 features new vocals by John, a bass line, Paul's vocals and Ringo's drums.
Paul's part (from take 6) was edited on take 2 on Anthology 2.
RM1 (30 Jan 1967) is a very rough mix intended for demo acetate.
Liner notes: A Work - in- progress mix of take 6, with the beginning and first verse coming from take 1. These takes formed the base for that 'monster' composite mix released on Anthology 2. But here, A Day In The Life is presented in its purest recorded form, without the orchestra - overdub from 10 February 1967.
9. She's Leaving Home (Lennon/McCartney) [03:24]
17 Mar 1967
Liner notes: This is the long-deleted mono mix. Its main difference is that it runs at the right speed. The stereo-mix was slowed down, presumably to introduce more drama to this sad ballad.
10. Hello Goodbye (Lennon/McCartney) [04:36 Take 1 Instrumental]
2 Oct 1967
11. Spiritual Regeneration (McCartney) [02:30 India]
14 Mar 1968
Tilleul's notes:
I have to warn anyone reading the liner notes of this bootleg. They are really hilarious ... those guys don't even know what they're talking about ... it makes me wonder if we have real Beatles fans collecting these tapes and transfering them on CD or if those people are just trying to get money from us, nothing more , nothing less...
Here are the liner notes for this track:
This is authentic! and friends plonking happily away at Mararishi Mahesh Yogi's Meditation Camp celebrating him and fellow meditator Beach Boy Mike Love's birthday. This was evidently before relationships to their Guru turned sour and this little ditty eventually became Back In The USSR.
The last sentence is ridiculous... particularly the bit about Back In The USSR ... those bootleggers are nuts ... and I'm not talking about the date they've given .. 20 March instead of 14 ...
12. Child Of Nature (Lennon) [02:37 Esher Demo]
May 1968
13. Sour Milk Sea (Harrison) [03:31 Esher Demo]
May 1968
14. Helter Skelter (Lennon/McCartney) [03:37 Regular RM1 Take 21]
9 Sep 1968
SS.WHI.23.21.RM1
Found on the mono White Album LP and released in 1980 on the US Rarities LP.
Liner notes: ANOTHER long deleted mono-mix! Besides being even more noisier than the stereo-mix, the main difference here is that after the fade-out the song doesn't come in again at the end and the drumming is different, too!
15. I'm So Tired (Lennon/McCartney) [02:06]
8 Oct 1968
Liner notes: An early mix with a differentt Lennon vocal as well as unused lead guitar and organ-overdubs.
Tilleul's notes: probably the "reconstructed" version from Hodge Podge vol. 1
16. New Song Session Medley [07:12]

19. Something (Harrison) [03:00 2 May 1969 Rough mix]
20. You Never Give Me Your Money (Lennon/McCartney) [05:49 6 May 1969 Rough mix]
21. Free As A Bird (Lennon) [04:38 Fake]
This version is a mix of John's demo and the officially released version.
Liner notes: ...and so ends the Anthology More 2 CD-set with an early rough mix of this late 'Beatles' recording. No Lead guitar and drums overdubs, John's original vocal still intact without Paul adding new lyrics to his dead friend's song. This mix has an overall warmer sound than the 'official' version (we think). Bye, bye!!

Disc 1
1. Love Me Do (Lennon/McCartney) [1:46 Radio BBC]
22 Jan 1963
Recorded: Playhouse Theatre, London, 22 January, 1963. For the opening track of this splendid compilation of rare and unreleased Beatles material, we chose a long-forgotten live-in-the-studio version of the Mop Tops' first hit, last heard on the BBC Saturday Club programme for which it was originally recorded, over 37 years ago!
2. Well, Darling (Lennon/McCartney) [1:57 Pre-Beatles]
May 1960
Recorded: Liverpool, May 1960. No ANTHOLOGY-Set without some more tracks from the legendary "Quarrymen" rehearsals, held in the McCartney-house at 40 Forthlin road, Allerton, Liverpool in spring 1960 (and again, from a better source-tape!)
Yes, it's Stuart Sutcliffe, who is plonking happily away on his newly-bought bass guitar on the first of these three numbers, actually more of a "jam" than a "song".
3. The One After 909 (Lennon/McCartney) [2:26 Pre-Beatles]
May 1960
Recorded: Liverpool, May 1960. No ANTHOLOGY-Set without some more tracks from the legendary "Quarrymen" rehearsals, held in the McCartney-house at 40 Forthlin road, Allerton, Liverpool in spring 1960 (and again, from a better source-tape!)
THE ONE AFTER 909 can be heard twice on the "Quarrymen" tape. You probably know the acoustic version on ANTHOLOGY PLUS. Now, this is the electric One!
4. You Must Write Every Day (Lennon/McCartney) [2:31 Pre-Beatles]
May 1960
Recorded: Liverpool, May 1960. No ANTHOLOGY-Set without some more tracks from the legendary "Quarrymen" rehearsals, held in the McCartney-house at 40 Forthlin road, Allerton, Liverpool in spring 1960 (and again, from a better source-tape!)
YOU MUST WRITE ME EVERYDAY, the third song featured here, is an early McCartney-"Oeuvre".
5. September In The Rain (Warren) [1:57 Decca]
1 Jan 1962
SS.DEC.11.01
Recorded: Decca Studios, London, 1 January 1962. ...and one more song from the infamous Decca-audition, a 1961 US-hit for ballad-singer Dinah Washington, crooned here by Paul, but to no avail...
6. Do You Want To Know A Secret (Lennon/McCartney) [2;04 Take 7]
11 Feb 1963
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 11 February 1963. From the 11-hour-marathon-session that produced the first BEATLES-album comes this 'clean' mix of DO YOU WANT TO KNOW... Take 7. There are backing-volcals throughout, a clean intro and no fade-out.
7. P.S. I Love You (Lennon/McCartney) [2:00 Radio BBC]
17 Jun 1963
Recorded: Maida Vale BBC Studio, London, 17 June 1963. A sweet version of this b-side to PLEASE PLEASE ME, recorded for and aired exclusively by the BBC on 25 June 1963, on the 4th edition of the groups' own POP GO programme.
8. It Won't Be Long (Lennon/McCartney) [2:02]
30 Jul 1963
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 30 July (8) & 12 September 1963 (9). Two early takes taped during sessions for the second Beatles album "WITH THE BEATLES!".
9. Hold Me Tight (Lennon/McCartney) [2:35 Take]
12 Sep 1963
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 30 July (8) & 12 September 1963 (9). Two early takes taped during sessions for the second Beatles album "WITH THE BEATLES!".
10. Can't Buy Me Love (Lennon/McCartney) [2:14 Take 2]
29 Jan 1964
Recorded: Pathe Marconi Studios, Paris, 29 January, 1964. You've heard a heavily edited version of this take 2 in mono on ANTHOLOGY 1. Now you'll hear it again - ony this time unedited and in STEREO!.
11. I'll Cry Instead (Lennon/McCartney) [2:06 Regular Mono]
1/2 Jun 1964
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 1 & 2 June, 1964. Two songs from the A HARD DAY'S NIGHT album, presented here in rare mono-versions, released only in the USA in 1964!
The main differences are as follows: I'LL CRY INSTEAD was edited to make it longer. The first verse was repeated towards the end.
12. Any Time At All (Lennon/McCartney) [2:12 Regular RM3 Take 11 - US]
2 Jun 1964
SS.AHDN.08.11.RM3.US
Created for Capitol. Released on "Something New" US mono LP.
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 1 & 2 June, 1964. Two songs from the A HARD DAY'S NIGHT album, presented here in rare mono-versions, released only in the USA in 1964!
The main differences are as follows: The US mono-mix of ANY TIME AT ALL has the piano mixed down low in the instrumental break.
Released on "Something New" US mono LP.
13. If I Fell (Lennon/McCartney) [1:17 Demo]
1964
Recorded: John's home, London, early 1964. An excerpt from a composing-tape made by John on a cassette-recorder (hence the sound). But it is a charming nontheless to hera him play an accoustic version of one of his most beautifull ballads.
14. If I Fell (Lennon/McCartney) [2:07 Radio BBC]
14 Jul 1964
Recorded: BBC Broadcasting House, London, 14 July, 1964. ...and treated it very well, as you can hear by listening to another unreleased "radio-only" performance. This time for the BBC TOP GEAR programme, broadcast on 16 July 1964.
15. I'm A Loser (Lennon/McCartney) [2:36 Take 3]
14 Aug 1964
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 14 August, 1964. With these two songs, we find ourselves in the midst of a busy day during BEATLES FOR SALE LP-sessions. We are hearing a not-yet fully-realised take 3 of I'M A LOSER and a first go at MR. MOONLIGHT. Yes, the same version can be found on ANTHOLOGY 1 but here it is in STEREO and the sound is superior!
16. Mr Moonlight (Johnson) [2:33 Take 1]
17. What You're Doing (Lennon/McCartney) [2:04 Take 11]
30 Sep 1964
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 30 September 1964. Another Outtake from FOR SALE sessions, this is take 11, a very different arrangement with more emphasis on George's guitar-riff and interesting vocal-harmonies. (This song was clearly an influence on the Byrds' version of MR. TAMBOURINE MAN!)
18. That Means A Lot (Lennon/McCartney) [2:34 Take 1]
20 Feb 1965
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 20 February (18) & 30 March, 1965 (19). ...and there were times when even got lost! This song never really made it, depite a not-so-bad take 1 (once again presented here in STEREO and in better sound-quality than on ANTHOLOGY 1!).
But over one month later the Beatles, not satisfied, got back to this song and thing got even worse! And, although there wer some good ideas, they gave up on it soon afterwards and gave the track to P.J. Proby. (The very last take (22) is on ANTHOLOGY PLUS!)
19. That Means A Lot (Lennon/McCartney) [3:23 Take 20]
30 Mar 1965
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 20 February (18) & 30 March, 1965 (19). ...and there were times when even got lost! This song never really made it, depite a not-so-bad take 1 (once again presented here in STEREO and in better sound-quality than on ANTHOLOGY 1!).
But over one month later the Beatles, not satisfied, got back to this song and thing got even worse! And, although there wer some good ideas, they gave up on it soon afterwards and gave the track to P.J. Proby. (The very last take (22) is on ANTHOLOGY PLUS!)

21. The Word (Lennon/McCartney) [2:43 Regular Stereo]

Recorded: EMI Studios, London,
with a different Lennon-Vocal
23. In My Life (Lennon/McCartney) [1:04 Alternate Mix]

Adorned here with an organ-solo which was later (thankfully) [overdubbed by the "real" thing.
24. We Can Work It Out (Lennon/McCartney) [2:14 Alternate Mix]
20 Oct 1965
Recorded: EMI Studios, London,
a single-tracked McCartney-Vocal (as opposed to the double-tracked version on the released version)

1. She Said, She Said (Lennon/McCartney) [1:09 Demo]
1966
Recorded: John's home in Weybridge, early 1966. Another excerpt from one of John's composing-tapes. Here he is working on his famous "drug" song, which at this stage consists of not more than the first verse only!
2. Strawberry Fields Forever (Lennon/McCartney) [3:09 Take 4]
28 Nov 1966
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 28 November 1966. Take Four - the one that we've been waiting for! No, in earnest, we chose to include yet another version because we think that this take is an important missing link in the evolution of John's psychedelic masterpiece. It is a cross between takes 1 and 6 (the near-finished product).
3. When I'm Sixty-Four (Lennon/McCartney) [2:48 Alternate Mix]
6 Dec 1966
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 6 December 1966

25, 26 May 1967, De Lane Lea Studio, London
the shortened 'Film'-version in a new 'dress' from 1998.
6. I Am The Walrus (Lennon/McCartney) [4:38 Alternate Mix]
5/6 Sep 1967
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 5, 6 September, 1967
heard here in a slightly different stereo-mix created in the early 80's.
7. Blue Jay Way (Harrison) [3.55 Regular Video Mix]
7 Sep 1967
Home Video stereo mix
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 7 September, 1967
Taken from the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR Video.
8. Across The Universe (Lennon/McCartney) [3.30 Alternate Mix]
4 Feb 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 4 February, 1968
In order to get it onto the abandoned GET BACK album, Producer/Engineer Glyn John mixed ACROSS THE UNIVERSE anew in early 1970. But then Phil Spector walked in...
9. Lady Madonna (Lennon/McCartney) [2:08 Alternate Mix]
3 Feb 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 3 February, 1968
The LADY MADONNA-mix is a very early rough mix with no overdubs yet.
10. Hey Bulldog (Lennon/McCartney) [3:20 Alternate Mix]
11 Feb 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 11 February, 1968
HEY BULLDOG was soon deleted from the orginal YELLOW SUBMARINE Film. We "rescued" this orginal 1968 mono-mix from one of the few surviving early film-copies. It comes complete with barking... Bulldogs!
11. Step Inside Love (Lennon/McCartney) [2.12 Demo]
1968
original demo recorded by Paul alone in early 1968.
12. Circles (Harrison) [2:14 Esher Demo]
May 1968
This harmonium-based demo comes from the accoustic WHITE ALBUM sessions, May 1968.
13. A Case Of The Blues (Lennon) [1:53 Demo]
1968
A CASE OF THE BLUES, finally, is not much of a song, rather an idea for a song. But John apparently never developped it any further. Recorded late 1968.
14. Dear Prudence (Lennon/McCartney) [3:52 Alternate Mix]
28-30 Aug 1968
Recorded Trident Studios, London, 28-30 August, 1968
A very good alternate mono-mix
15. Hey Jude (Lennon/McCartney) [5:54 Take 9]
30 Jul 1968
The recording of this take was filmed and shown in a TV Documentary called MUSIC!
16. Revolution (Lennon/McCartney) [3:23 Backing Track]
10 Jul 1968
When made a promo-film for this song at Twickenham Studios in London on 4 September, 1968 they sang live over the pre-recorded backing-track. And this is it!
17. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (Lennon/McCartney) [2:44 Alternate Mix]
3,4 Jul 1968
basically the same version as on ANTHOLOGY 3, but here is a different mix.
18. Sexy Sadie (Lennon/McCartney) [3:52 Alternate Version]
13 Aug 1968
unedited and 47 seconds longer!
19. Merry Christmas 1968 (McCartney) [1:31 Xmas]
Nov 1968
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, November 1968. This is Paul's "portion" of the 1968 Beatles Christmas Fan-Club Flexi-single. An acoustic ditty he recorded on his own, presumably during a Mary Hopkin recording session.
20. Don't Let Me Down (Lennon/McCartney) [3:45 Get Back Session]
22 Jan 1969
Recorded: Apple Studios, London, 22 January, 1969. When, in February 1969, Producer/Engineer Glyn John began his task to compile the ill-fated GET BACK album, he chose this earthy version of DON'T LET ME DOWN for inclusion. And a good choice it was indeed...
21. Come And Get It (McCartney) [2:29 Alternate Mix]
24 Jul 1969
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 24 July, 1969. We all know this McCartney solo-demo quite well from ANTHOLOGY 3. But this is an alternate mix with more emphasis on his double-tracked vocal.
22. Octopus's Garden (Starkey) [2:49]
8 Dec 1969
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 8 December, 1969. Like the previous track, this is not really a Beatles-recording. But on the other hand, it is (or, rather, was) and that's why it's here!
This recording of other musicians supplying bass, lead guitar and piano to Ringo's 29 April vocal-recording and drumming was necessary because Ringo was to appear on a George Martin TV-Special and, due to musicians' union rules, everything had to be "live". And so, to complicate matters, Ringo had to sing over his pre-recorded vocal on the actual Telecast.
And why didn't the other Beatles help him? They were no longer around... (It's them making funny noises. At least those were saved!)
23. Get Back Reprise (Lennon/McCartney) [1:36 Rooftop Concert]
30 Jan 1969
Recorded: Apple-Roof, 30 January, 1969. We hope that by listening to this ANTHOLOGY 2000 set, a splendid time was had by all and we say bye, bye from the Apple-roof!
