Leigh Folk Club says Thanks for Joe’s Night
All the members of Calico Folk Group would like to thank everyone who supported our annual ‘Joe’s Night’, especially our guest artists, Marie Little, Bram Taylor & Pennygate at St Joseph’s Hall in Leigh, in aid of Christies Against Cancer. The night was an overwhelming success, we were hoping to raise £1600 to buy a special piece of equipment that measures the dose of chemotherapy to cancer patients. I am delighted to say that we in fact exceeded that amount and actually raised £1806 on the night. We would like to add a special thankyou to you Joan for your constant support in our fund raising events. Best wishes,
Pauline

ROY HARRIS IN JANUARY 2005
My apologies to anyone who went to the Bothy Folk Club, Southport, on Sunday, March 7th, especially to see me. I couldn’t get there because of train cancellations, to my great annoyance and disappointment. Clive Pownceby was very understanding about the situation, and many thanks to him for that. We have re-arranged the gig, it now takes place on 9 January 2005, a long way ahead I know but I look forward to it. The Bothy has been part of my singing life for many years and I do want to go there once more.
However, since the date is so far ahead it gives me the chance to try to get some other gigs in the NW to go with it. Apart from Festivals it will be my last trip up there so I would like to ask if any club would like to book me between the dates 7 - 12th Jan ? I can still sing, tell a few yarns, and still love to have plenty of audiemce participation. Anyone interested please contact me on 02920 657311 or [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers,
Roy Harris (message updated 21.3.04)

Band Looking For Recording Studio...
Hello Joan
I’ve just had a look at your website which is full of very useful information, but I wonder if you or any of your members can help.
I play in an 8 piece Irish band called "Beware of the Pig". We play traditional and contemporary Irish music. We all live in the Wigan & St Helens area and we are looking to make our own recording. Can you recommend a recording studio? Here’s the line-up: Lead singer & bodhran; bass guitar; guitar & mandolin; fiddle; flute; whistle; accordion; drum kit.
We’ve all been playing for a number of years and some of us have taken part in competitions here in the UK and the All Ireland Finals.
We’re playing at the Brian Boru in Ashton on the 16th April if you’re interested (come down for a Guinness).
Occasionally we need to bring in other musicians - are any of your members into playing Irish music? (This is not for beginners, though.)
Any info much appreciated.
Thanks.
Peter Andrews

Radio Programme Back On Stream
Malcolm Rigby tells me they’re streaming again at KZSC. You can go to KZSC.UCSC.edu to get instructions on how to pick up the programme, so everyone who sent him CDs can listen to themselves again, if they stay up long enough. It goes out Mondays 3pm-6pm (local time), which is 11pm-2am BST. Recent plays have included Mark Dowding and Angie Blaydon, the Threlfalls, Jill Fielding, the Houghton Weavers, Carol Darwen and Nick Pantling, and Mary Humphries and Anahata.
(See "New Radio Programme Looking For CDs" below)

NEW RADIO PROGRAMME LOOKING FOR CDs
Some of you will know Malcolm Rigby, a Lancashire lad who’s now resident in California. He and his wife Bobby often visit back here in the UK, and are often to be seen at a good number of folk festivals over here. Malcolm ran a radio programme in California, but the station went all talk, so his music programme was lost. But the good news is that he now has a programme with another station covering roughly the same listening area, playing folk music and song from the British Isles and Ireland. The programme is called The Northern Bridge, and runs from 3pm - 6pm on Monday afternoons, local time (currently 10pm - 1am in the UK). The station is KZSC at 88.1FM, or www.KZSC.org on the web.
Malcolm would like to assure those artistes who have passed him their CDs, that they are getting an airing over there again, and that any others he receives will get an outing on the programme, particularly as he’s trying to feature good performers who aren’t known over there. If you want to send Malcolm your CD, email him at [email protected] for details of where to send it.

SONG OF THE WEEK
THE BANKS OF THE LEE
Dm G Dm C
When two lovers meet down beside the green bower
Dm Am Dm Am C F
When two lovers meet down beside the green tree
Dm G Dm C
And Mary, my fond Mary, declared unto her lover
Dm Am Dm Am C Dm
You have sto - len my poor heart from the banks of the Lee
I loved her very dearly, so true and sincerely
There was no one in this wide world I loved more than she
Every bush and every bower, every rose and pretty flower
Reminds me of my Mary on the banks of the Lee
Don’t stay out late tonight, love, on the moorlands, my mary
Don’t stay out late tonight, love, too long away from me
For little was our notion when we parted o’er the ocean
That we’d be for ever parted from the banks of the Lee
I will pluck my love some roses, some blooming Irish roses
I will pluck my love some roses, the finest ever grew
And I’ll place them on the grave of my own dear darling Mary
In that cold and silent graveyard where she sleeps ‘neath the dew
This week’s song was requested by Kevin Brady. Further requests/suggestions for future Songs of the Week to Joan please. Requests have been received for enough songs for the next few weeks, including Cindy oh Cindy, Ee By Gum, Banks of the Lee, Loch Lomond, Sweet Thames Flow Softly, various songs of His Worship And The Pig, My Voice Keeps Changing On Me, and Sing Like No One’s Listening. Keep the requests coming!

The Ramblin’ Riversiders play Leyland
A local skiffle group who beat the Americans in their own backyard by winning 1st prize in last summer’s National Old-Time Country Music Festival in Iowa are to make a special appearance at a Leyland club in April.
The Ramblin’ Riversiders, formed almost 50 years ago and still featuring original members Harold Dearden and Neil Farnworth, have made an appearance on BBC TV’s Look North West.
They are hopeful of securing a slot on Jools Holland’s ‘Later’ show and are playing the prestigious Fylde Folk Festival in September before heading west again next February to take up an invitation to appear at a major festival in Texas.
Support on the night comes from The Careless Undertakers, whose repertoire includes songs by such artists as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and The Flying Burrito Brothers.
Tickets for ‘An Evening of Americana’, to be held at Fox Lane Sports & Social Club on 24 April 2004, are priced at £5. They are available by telephoning Bill on 07952 479514 or emailing [email protected]
The group have a website at http://uk.geocities.com/ramblinriversiders/Home.htm
