The North West

Songwriting Competition -

Deadline Extended

will again be taking place this year. This is about the eighth year of running it, and this year it will be held in the upstairs room at Elements in Bolton.

Contact Alec Martin (Buskers Ball) for an application form and set of rules - telephone 07904 215331. You’ll be expected to perform your song live at a series of heats held at Elements, which will run weekly from September through to the Grand Final in December. You don’t have to live in the North West, just as long as you can make it to the heats. Any kind of music is allowed, as long as it’s vaguely ‘acoustic’ ...and no drumkits!!!

Kirsty McGee and Nathan Ball are amongst previous winners, and entries have been attracted from as far afield as York and Bristol. Closing date for entries was originally 31st August but has been extended to 30th September because some papers didn’t print the details until late.

Radio Programme Back On Stream

Malcolm Rigby tells me they’re streaming again at KZSC. You can go to KZSC.UCSC.edu to get instructions on how to pick up the programme, so everyone who sent him CDs can listen to themselves again, if they stay up long enough. It goes out Mondays 3pm-6pm (local time), which is 11pm-2am BST. Recent plays have included Mark Dowding and Angie Blaydon, the Threlfalls, Jill Fielding, the Houghton Weavers, Carol Darwen and Nick Pantling, and Mary Humphries and Anahata.

(See "New Radio Programme Looking For CDs" below)

Sword Dancers Wanted

Did you know that the oldest records of sword dancing in England come from Lancashire? You can be part of this tradition - whether or not you have dancing experience.

Starting in the autumn, 2003, a new team will be practising in the Chorley/Preston/Leyland area, dancing both longsword and rapper. We are still looking for recruits, whether experienced dancers or newcomers who want to learn. The team will be practising every week, and will be aiming to perform in pubs and clubs, at festivals, or indeed anywhere an interested audience might be found.

If you think this might be for you, then for further information contact:

NEW RADIO PROGRAMME LOOKING FOR CDs

Some of you will know Malcolm Rigby, a Lancashire lad who’s now resident in California. He and his wife Bobby often visit back here in the UK, and are often to be seen at a good number of folk festivals over here. Malcolm ran a radio programme in California, but the station went all talk, so his music programme was lost. But the good news is that he now has a programme with another station covering roughly the same listening area, playing folk music and song from the British Isles and Ireland. The programme is called The Northern Bridge, and runs from 3pm - 6pm on Monday afternoons, local time (currently 10pm - 1am in the UK). The station is KZSC at 88.1FM, or www.KZSC.org on the web.

Malcolm would like to assure those artistes who have passed him their CDs, that they are getting an airing over there again, and that any others he receives will get an outing on the programme, particularly as he’s trying to feature good performers who aren’t known over there. If you want to send Malcolm your CD, email him at [email protected] for details of where to send it.

A MESSAGE FROM ROY HARRIS...

ROY’S 70TH YEAR PLAN

On June 15th 2003 I will be 70 years old. Naturally there will be a family party but I intend to further mark this milestone in my life by having a celebratory year . From then to June 15 2004 my aim is to fill the year with as many happy times as possible. I have some non-musical things planned, including the honeymoon that Elaine and I didn’t have 45 years ago, but I would like to include some singing too.

A few years ago I retired from full-time singing and that still holds, I’m not making a comeback, but in this special year I would like to have one more go-around the clubs and festivals. There are many old pals and friendly places that I’ve been missing since retirement. This would be a fine way to see them again, and maybe to see some new ones.

So, club and festival organisers, if I’ve ever played at your place, or even if I haven’t, I’d love to come around again. I can still put a song across, and tell a tall tale or two. If you’re interested please contact me at 31 Carling Court, Haig Place, Cardiff, CF5 4PH. Phone 02920 657311, or e-mail [email protected] Remember the time-span, June 15th 2003 –June 15th 2004.

This may well be my last go-around so I hope to hear from lots of you. Thanks in advance.

ROY HARRIS.

SONG OF THE WEEK

BALLAD OF WIGAN PIER

© Jack Winstanley

C F G7 C

Some people say that there’s a pier in Wigan town somewhere

F C D7 G

George Formby said it led to t’sands on stilts up in the air

F G7 C F G7

Some folks’ll say that it’s a myth but I don’t think that they’re right

C F C F G7 C

‘Cos I once fell off yon Wigan Pier staggering home one night

G7 C

‘Cos it’s long and it’s strong and it leads nowhere

F C

You can see it when the weather is clear

F C Am

If you feel inclined, if you’ve got the time

F G7 C

You can spend a lovely day on Wigan Pier

I’ve taken part in catching tripe in waters deep and clean

You dangle mint balls on a string and hope that they are seen

Thy sticks of tripe’d swim around all shiny bright and new

And just to show where they come from, there’s Wigan written all through

One day io saw the QE2 come sailing up to t’pier

The bunting flew and t’brass band played to show the Queen were here

She stepped ashore to thundrous cheers and started to recall

"I’ve seen some piers throughout the years but this pier beats ‘em all!"

So if you are told that there’s a pier in Wigan town somewhere

Don’t laugh it off like others do, look round, you’ll see it there

It’s spick and span and painted white and standing out a mile

But if you’re asked just where it is, don’t say much, just smile!

This week’s song was requested by Bob Evans. Further requests/suggestions for future Songs of the Week to Joan please. Requests have been received for enough songs for the next few weeks, including The Smuggler, They Don’t Write ‘Em Like That Any More, Copper Kettle, Nightingales Sing, Step It Out Mary, Angeline Is Always Friday, She Moved Through The Fair, Jim Larkin, Hobo’s Lullaby, This Town Is Not Your Own, various songs of His Worship And The Pig, My Voice Keeps Changing On Me, and Sing Like No One’s Listening. Keep the requests coming!
