NEW LOCAL RADIO FOLK MUSIC PROGRAMME IMMINENT!
BBC GMR (95.1 & 104.6 FM)
Tuesdays 7pm - 8pm starting on 20 May 2003
With presenter Ali O’Brien
Whilst Irish music on BBC GMR is catered for with the excellent "Parlour" presented by Alan Keegan on Mondays at 7-00pm, it has been a while since there has been a programme for general folk music focusing on the North West artists and club scene. With the demise of Mike Billington's show on Radio Manchester/GMR five years ago, Harry Ogden's Folkspan on Piccadilly Radio and Henry Ayrton's show on the BBC North network, local radio has had little for the Manchester based folk fans to tune in to.
Now, thanks to some letters written to GMR deputy editor Mike Shaft, Folk Club and Festival organiser Ali O'Brien is about to present a brand new show aimed at a North West listening audience. Called "Sounds of Folk", it will be broadcast on Tuesday evenings between 7-00 and 8-00 and will focus on North West artists and events.
Ali has been busy in the studio rehearsing the show and getting familiar with the controls. She is doing the job of Editor, Producer, Presenter, Interviewer and Engineer and in her spare time will be involved in running the successful Saddleworth Folk Festival as Chairman and Artistic Director – a job that she has done for the past six years. Ali was also involved in running the Folk Club at the Cross Keys in Uppermill for six years and the once-a-month SAFRA night at the Waggon Inn at Uppermill. With husband Geoff, she is a regular attendee at other festivals throughout the UK and will be taking the opportunity to interview artists for future broadcast on the show.
With a wide taste and range of Folk Music to draw from, the show promises something for everyone. North West based artists are invited to send CDs and information about themselves in to the show for broadcast consideration and club organisers in the GMR listening area should forward their dates in to Ali for the Diary spot on the show.
"Sounds of Folk" is initially intended to fill the gap vacated by the evening sports programme until the football returns in the autumn but should interest in the show be good then who knows what may happen!
Ali will listen to and give air time to CDs she receives. Anybody interested in sending in their CD or any information about Clubs, Festivals, etc should contact Ali at:

Comments about the programme should be sent to Mike Shaft at the same address or by email to [email protected]
NEW RADIO PROGRAMME LOOKING FOR CDs
Some of you will know Malcolm Rigby, a Lancashire lad who’s now resident in California. He and his wife Bobby often visit back here in the UK, and are often to be seen at a good number of folk festivals over here. Malcolm ran a radio programme in California, but the station went all talk, so his music programme was lost. But the good news is that he now has a programme with another station covering roughly the same listening area, playing folk music and song from the British Isles and Ireland. The programme is called The Northern Bridge, and runs from 3pm - 6pm on Monday afternoons, local time (currently 10pm - 1am in the UK). The station is KZSC at 88.1FM, or www.KZSC.org on the web.
Malcolm would like to assure those artistes who have passed him their CDs, that they are getting an airing over there again, and that any others he receives will get an outing on the programme, particularly as he’s trying to feature good performers who aren’t known over there. If you want to send Malcolm your CD, email him at [email protected] for details of where to send it.

A MESSAGE FROM ROY HARRIS...
ROY’S 70TH YEAR PLAN
On June 15th 2003 I will be 70 years old. Naturally there will be a family party but I intend to further mark this milestone in my life by having a celebratory year . From then to June 15 2004 my aim is to fill the year with as many happy times as possible. I have some non-musical things planned, including the honeymoon that Elaine and I didn’t have 45 years ago, but I would like to include some singing too.
A few years ago I retired from full-time singing and that still holds, I’m not making a comeback, but in this special year I would like to have one more go-around the clubs and festivals. There are many old pals and friendly places that I’ve been missing since retirement. This would be a fine way to see them again, and maybe to see some new ones.
So, club and festival organisers, if I’ve ever played at your place, or even if I haven’t, I’d love to come around again. I can still put a song across, and tell a tall tale or two. If you’re interested please contact me at 31 Carling Court, Haig Place, Cardiff, CF5 4PH. Phone 02920 657311, or e-mail [email protected] Remember the time-span, June 15th 2003 –June 15th 2004.
This may well be my last go-around so I hope to hear from lots of you. Thanks in advance.
ROY HARRIS.

THE ROSE OF THE RIBBLE VALLEY
A Novel by Graham Dixon
Folksinger, GEOFF, is the ‘Front man’ with ELDERFLOWER PUNCH - a four-piece musical group who, when they perform, pack the pubs and folk clubs of Northwest England. WAYNE plays bass; CHLOE, a student archaeologist, is the singer and LUTE is the mandolin player.
The band are plagued with cancellations, due to the ‘ridiculous’ law which allows no more than two performers to play at any one time, in venues that do not hold a very expensive ‘Public Entertainment Licence’.
BRIAN CLAYTON, an old folk-singing friend, comes to the rescue when he opens a new ‘Live Music Venue’ in the area.
Brian’s wife TINA is from a ‘well to do’ family, her father FRANK CROXLEY and her devious brother STANISLAW run a large company and own much of the land and property in the Ribble Valley. The Croxleys have many secrets and past indiscretions locked away with other skeletons in the family cupboard.
The beautiful ROSEMARY appears to Geoff, first of all in a vivid dream experienced after sampling a strange drink made from the rose petals collected from Croxley’s Wood, and then (apparently) in the flesh on a car park after a gig. From the ensuing conversation it appears that Rosemary is a ghost and has been dead for almost three hundred years.
Rosemary is trying to find out what happened to her fiance BRYAN of CLAYTON who was an eighteenth century street musician cum minstrel and the author of the song THE ROSE OF THE RIBBLE VALLEY.
The story, sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, sees Geoff and Chloe getting mixed up in a clever illegal drugs operation as they try to solve the mystery of Bryan of Clayton and his beloved Rose of The Ribble Valley.

SONG OF THE WEEK
THREE DRUNKEN MAIDENS
G C G D7 G
There were three drunken maidens came from the Isle of Wight,
C G D7 G
They drank from Monday morning right through to Saturday night,
D7 G D7
When Saturday night came round my boys, they would not then go out,
G C G D7 G
These three drunken maidens they pushed the jug about.
Then up comes bouncing Sally her cheeks as red as a bloom,
Move up my jolly sisters and give young Sally some room,
For I'll be your equal before that you go out,
These four drunken maidens they pushed the jug about.
There's partridge and pheasant, there's woodcock and hare,
There's all kinds of dainties, no scarcity was there,
There's forty quarts of ale my boys and still they wouldn't go out,
These four drunken maidens they pushed the jug about.
Then up comes the landlord, he's asking for his pay,
It's a forty pound bill my boys these girls have got to pay,
That's ten pounds apiece my boys yet still they wouldn't go out,
These four drunken maidens they pushed the jug about.
Now where are your feathered caps, your mantles rich and fine,
They've all been a-swallowed up in tankards of good wine,
And where are your maidenheads, you maidens brisk and gay,
We left them in the alehouse, we drank them clean away.
This week’s song was requested by Diane Schanzl. Further requests/suggestions for future Songs of the Week to Joan please. Requests have been received for enough songs for the next few weeks, including Dominique, Oh Mary Dear, Joe Hill, I Useta Lover, I’m Just A Country Boy, Tennessee Waltz, Handle Me With Care, Drink Yer Glasses Empty, William Taylor, Robin Hood (Aspull version), Mary Ellen Carter, Home Boys Home, Real Ould Mountain Dew, various songs of His Worship And The Pig, My Voice Keeps Changing On Me, and Sing Like No One’s Listening. Keep the requests coming!
