A MESSAGE FROM ROY HARRIS...
ROY’S 70TH YEAR PLAN
On June 15th 2003 I will be 70 years old. Naturally there will be a family party but I intend to further mark this milestone in my life by having a celebratory year . From then to June 15 2004 my aim is to fill the year with as many happy times as possible. I have some non-musical things planned, including the honeymoon that Elaine and I didn’t have 45 years ago, but I would like to include some singing too.
A few years ago I retired from full-time singing and that still holds, I’m not making a comeback, but in this special year I would like to have one more go-around the clubs and festivals. There are many old pals and friendly places that I’ve been missing since retirement. This would be a fine way to see them again, and maybe to see some new ones.
So, club and festival organisers, if I’ve ever played at your place, or even if I haven’t, I’d love to come around again. I can still put a song across, and tell a tall tale or two. If you’re interested please contact me at 31 Carling Court, Haig Place, Cardiff, CF5 4PH. Phone 02920 657311, or e-mail [email protected] Remember the time-span, June 15th 2003 –June 15th 2004.
This may well be my last go-around so I hope to hear from lots of you. Thanks in advance.
ROY HARRIS.

THE ROSE OF THE RIBBLE VALLEY
A Novel by Graham Dixon
Folksinger, GEOFF, is the ‘Front man’ with ELDERFLOWER PUNCH - a four-piece musical group who, when they perform, pack the pubs and folk clubs of Northwest England. WAYNE plays bass; CHLOE, a student archaeologist, is the singer and LUTE is the mandolin player.
The band are plagued with cancellations, due to the ‘ridiculous’ law which allows no more than two performers to play at any one time, in venues that do not hold a very expensive ‘Public Entertainment Licence’.
BRIAN CLAYTON, an old folk-singing friend, comes to the rescue when he opens a new ‘Live Music Venue’ in the area.
Brian’s wife TINA is from a ‘well to do’ family, her father FRANK CROXLEY and her devious brother STANISLAW run a large company and own much of the land and property in the Ribble Valley. The Croxleys have many secrets and past indiscretions locked away with other skeletons in the family cupboard.
The beautiful ROSEMARY appears to Geoff, first of all in a vivid dream experienced after sampling a strange drink made from the rose petals collected from Croxley’s Wood, and then (apparently) in the flesh on a car park after a gig. From the ensuing conversation it appears that Rosemary is a ghost and has been dead for almost three hundred years.
Rosemary is trying to find out what happened to her fiance BRYAN of CLAYTON who was an eighteenth century street musician cum minstrel and the author of the song THE ROSE OF THE RIBBLE VALLEY.
The story, sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, sees Geoff and Chloe getting mixed up in a clever illegal drugs operation as they try to solve the mystery of Bryan of Clayton and his beloved Rose of The Ribble Valley.

SONG OF THE WEEK
PUTTIN' ON THE STYLE
Words by Norman Cazden and Jerry Walters (last 2 v)
©1957 Melody Trails, Inc.
D A7
Puttin' on the agony, puttin' on the style,
D
That's what all the young folks are doing all the while.
D7 G
And as I look around me I'm very apt to smile,
A7 D
To see so many people puttin' on the style.
Sweet sixteen she goes to church, just to see the boys,
Laughs and giggles at every little noise.
She turns this way a little, she turns this way a while,
But we know she's only puttin' on the style.
Young man <home from college>, driving like he's mad, in a hot rod car
<With a pair of horses> he borrowed from his dad. In a pair of yellow gloves
He <cracks his whip> so loudly, just to see <the ladies> smile. makes it roar / his girlfriend
But <everyone> knows he's only puttin' on the style. she
Old man in a carriage, smokes a dirty pipe.
Looking like a pumpkin that's only half-way ripe.
A-drinkin', smokin', chewin' and thinking all the while,
That there's nothing equal to puttin' on the style.
Preacher in a pulpit, shouts with all his might:
"Glory Hallelujah!", puts people in a fright.
Now you may think it's Satan, up and down the aisles,
But it's just a preacher puttin' on the style.
Young man just from college makes a big display
With a great big jawbreak which he can hardly say
It can't be found in Webster's and won't be for a while
But everyone knows he's only puttin' on the style
Movie star in Holywood by the swimming pool
Never gets her feet wet, that lady ain't no fool
Sittin’ in a bathing suit, dark glasses and a smile
She don't know that we know she's puttin' on the style
See the young executive in his charcoal gray
Talking with some union men who've come to have their say
Sitting at his office desk and wearing a toothpaste smile
But that's just the executive puttin' on the style
Congressman from Washington, looking mighty slick
Wants to get elected and go back there right quick
Beats his breast and hollers and waves the flag awhile
But we know he's only puttin' on the style
This week’s song was requested by Kevin Brady. Further requests/suggestions for future Songs of the Week to Joan please. Requests have been received for enough songs for the next few weeks, including Not The Fields Of Athenry, Tripe Ships Of Wigan, St George’s Family Tree, Queen Of Argyll, Forest Lawn, Isle of St Helena, Three Drunken Maidens, Dominique, Oh Mary Dear, Joe Hill, I Useta Lover, I’m Just A Country Boy, Tennessee Waltz, Handle Me With Care, various songs of His Worship And The Pig, My Voice Keeps Changing On Me, and Sing Like No One’s Listening. Keep the requests coming!
SONG FOR PEACE OF THE WEEK
FLOWERS OF PEACE
Words by Pete Seeger; Tune: "Wild Mountain Thyme"
Oh the summertime is coming, and the leaves are sweet returning
But those flowers of peace, it's for them I'm really yearning
Will they bloom, ever bloom?
Will they bloom in the springtime?
Oh you flowers of peace
When the world should be in ringtime
Will ye bloom, ever bloom?
I built my love a bower by a clear, crystal river
But the thing her heart desires is a thing I cannot give her
Oh providence smiled impassive, while I fell on bended knee
Said, the lives of your empires are no more than swarms of bees
If you and I would see those flowers, get up and rouse your neighbours
When first the seed I'd planted, it takes long and careful labour
If you and I would see those flowers, go out and till the fertile soil
It will take more than prayers, it takes hard and sweaty toil
Submissions and suggestions for Song for Peace of the Week will be gratefully received.
