FESTIVE CORKS CULTURALLY CAPITAL FOLK EMBRACE EUROPE
To present a programme that will be recalled as a major highlight of Cork citys European Capital of Culture 2005 Year.  That was the challenge for the 26th Beamish Cork Folk Festival, between September 2nd and 11th.  It was a challenge relished by Festival Joint Directors William Hammond and Jim Walsh.  The result?  An event that will bring some of Europes finest folk musicians to Leeside, sharing stages with the best of what Ireland and, of course, Cork - has to offer.  In order of appearance, Paul Dromey takes a trip through some of the musical marriages and other high points we can anticipate.

Marta Sebestyen and Muzsikas (Everyman Palace Theatre Sunday September 4th.25 MUZSIKS proudly carry a tradition born of playing traditional Hungarian folk music in the villages.  This is the true folk music of Hungary, the most beautiful melodies of which were considered by Bla Bartok to be equal with the greatest works of music. Their famous song Szerelem szerelem (Love, love), performed by Marta Sebestyen, was heard in the Acadeny Award winning film The English Patient. Once heard, Marta Sebestyens haunting singing is not easily forgotten. She is perhaps best known in this part of the world from Andy Irvines East Wind concept album.

La Bottine Souriante with North Cregg (City Hall Friday September 9th) 25
La Bottine Souriantes  explosive Qubcois/Canadian sound have crossed borders the world over. It pays homage to tradition with a dash of jazz, salsa and pure folk, while perfectly representing the symbol of vitality and pride of its mother culture.  Dirty Linen magazine proclaimed them "The best band in the world!. North Cregg.Formed in Cork back in 1996, the creggies features the wonderful vocal talents of Fiona Kelleher who is equally at home singing the sean-ns songs of her local area in West Cork as well as more contemporary or jazz material. Instrumentally, the band pairs the virtuoso button accordionist, Christy Leahy, alongside the dazzling fiddle playing of Liam Flanagan backed up by the swing piano playing of Ciaran Coughlan and Martin Leahy on drums and guitar.
Eddi Reader with The Cork Pops Orchestra. (City Hall Saturday September10th) 25.
Rightly regarded as one of Scotlands national artistic treasures, Eddi Readers astonishing vocal versatility, celebrated three octave range, and resplendently uninhibited approach to her material; coalesce to make her one of todays true divas of popular music, championing the more organic acoustic style. For this concert, Eddies  Band are Boo Hewerdine  guitar, John McCusker  fiddle, Ian Carr  guitar, Ewen Vernal  bass and Alan Kelly  accordion. The Band will be joined by the 9 piece string section of The Cork Pops Orchestra, for a performance of songs from the acclaimed collection Eddi Reader Sings the Songs of Robbie Burns.  As she says: I dont see Burns as some stuffy 18th century poet - Rather as a Tom Waits or young Bob Dylan of his day.

Dick Gaughan
He is the archetypal folk troubadour, selecting, interpreting, sometimes writing
spellbinding songs, while also providing deeper understanding of the world we all share.  Many of the songs Dick Gaughan sings in his proud Scottish voice are about ordinary people who have done extraordinary things.

Ron Kavana An Criscn Ln Saturday September 10th
A concert  titled Irish Ways, Irish History in Song with Alias Ron Kavana Band featuring Mick Coyne, Martin Leahy, Annie Armstrong and many more.

Carlos Nunez with Sliabh Notes (Cork Opera House Sunday September 11th) 25 Galician master piper Carlos Nunezs music and pioneering spirit have taken him far beyond the usual limits of his chosen instruments.  He has garnered countless awards and nominations: including a Grammy shared with The Chieftains, for the album Santiago.  Artists such as Ry Cooder and Jackson Browne have featured on his recordings.  In July 2004, Nunez shared his 33rd birthday with an audience of 30.000 people in an unforgettable concert at the Auditorio de Castrelos in Vigo.
When it comes to capturing the sheer magic and joy of Sliabh Luachra dance music, youd be hard put to nominate a finer trio than Sliabh Notes. Fiddler Matt Cranitch, Donal Murphy on button accordion, and singer/guitarist Tommy OSullivan hail from the three counties that make up Sliabh Luachra.  But, as we all know, Sliabh luachra is more a state of mind than a mere geographical area!
