Revision of The genus Europtron with description of Europtron atlanticum sp. n. from Morocco (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae)

Ale Bezdk, David Krl, Denis Keith, Marc Lacroix.

Abstract. The pachydeminae genus Europtron Marseul, 1876 is revised. Currently, three species are recognized: E. gracile Marseul, 1867, E. confusum Marseul, 1878 (both from Algeria) and E. atlanticum sp. n. from Atlantic coast of Morocco. The new species differs from both of the previously known North African species mainly by remarkably densely punctate and setaceous clypeus, by all around setaceous pronotum, and by shape of metatibia and parameres. The female of E. gracile is described for the first time, females of E. confusum and E. atlanticum sp. n. are still unknown. Europtron ibericum Balthasar, 1929 is considered a junior objective synonym of E. confusum. Known distribution of all three species is mapped and their bionomy is discussed.

Abstract. The paper summarizes herpetological faunistic data obtained by the Czech biological expedition to Libya in 1999. Material was collected on 30 localities in Lybian provinces Tarabulus (9 localities), Binghazi (10) and Sabha (11), and on four adjecent localities in Tunisia. Authors recorded two species of frogs and 25 species of reptiles: two species of turtles, two agamids, one chamaeleonid, seven species of geckos, four species of lacertids, three species of scincids, four species of colubrids and two species of wiperids. Records of Agama impalearis Boettger, 1874 and Tarentola neglecta Strauch, 1895 extended the known ranges of these species. Material of some taxonomically difficult taxa, i.c. Acanthodactylus scutellatus (Audouin, 1809) group, genera Stenodactylus Fitzinger, 1826 and Tarentola Gray, 1825, is discussed.
