Although I just had a short meet (45 minutes) with those students came from Canada and America, I found that they were very nice, and they were very keen on know more about the life of a normal Hong Kong student.
Nine of us from 6E joined four overseas students. I could hardly remember some of their names, Kelly and Dennis, but forgot rest of the two. After we introduced ourselves, we had a game “Music Chair”. The way of how to play this game is that a number of chairs are placed in a circle at first, then participants would have to walk around the chairs during the music is playing. When the music stop, participants would have to sit down on the chair immediately, and for those who cannot have a seat then he or she would become the loser. Since there were no musical players present, therefore I had to be the music man. When there were more losers, I invited them to sing with me. At last, two of our classmates became the winner, and they had to think a performance in front of us. They decided to sing a Chinese song, but the foreign students didn’t know Cantonese, therefore they have to give a brief about the song they sang before. After the performance, We all together had a dance, following by the foreign students. At last, we were divided into four small groups, sang a simple song. But each group had to sing the sentence that the previous group sang before. Luckily, I could hardly follow them at last because I didn’t hear those songs before. After these interaction games, all of us had to go for lunch and thus ended this short meet.
In fact I want to apologize to those foreign students for our performance during the meet because I feel there is no friendly air among us. We just like a set of robots under the instructions of teachers to have a meet with those students. In addition, I think this meet cannot improve our oral skills, and also gave a bad impression to those students. I know this is a good chance to let us have a good experience on communicating with foreigners, but next time if we get similar chances, I think that the teachers should provide a set of activities for us so that this can let us at least have a chance to open a specific causal-talking topic. If the teachers can organize a talk and then let those foreign students to bring out some problems during the talk and then let the local students to answer, then I think this can also let us to practice our oral skills. Moreover, this method can both avoid the common problem of local students, lack of initiative, and let us to know more about foreign student’s culture. I think this would benefit both sides and if we get enough initiative, we could have a better performance.
