The Fohnetek Program of Enhanced Spelling

The Roman alphabet is composed of 26 letters because medieval Latin had 26 speech sounds called phonemes. The English language has a much larger number of phonemes, 45 to be exact. This creates serious problems for spelling the 45 English phonemes with only 26 letters. The common spellings shown in dictionaries resulted from a combination of many incompatible spelling strategies. As a result, the English language is typically spelled in highly irregular manner that can only be learned by rote memorization.

The Fohnetek program of Enhanced Spelling presents an intelligent alternative. Enhanced Spelling is a program of spelling reform that progressively introduces phonic spellings in seven successive levels of application. An appropriate level of phonic spelling is available for every conceivable application, from the most formal correspondance to stylish phonic spellings that impress your friends. As you ascend the various levels, you will learn to identify and spell each of the 45 English phonemes by sound alone. Eventually, you will no longer need a dictionary for spelling.

The seven levels of Enhanced Spelling are shown below, with each level spelled according to its own rules. Standard American pronunciations are used throughout.

Level One, Voyce Writing:

Voyce Writing is a simplified method of spelling in which one-tenth of all English phonemes are spelled consistently by sound. The new spellings show the actual pronunciations, but the subtle nuonces of the phonic spellings are scarcely detectible. Voyce Writing is suitable for even the most formal applications.
