Loc Start-up
Comb Twist Method -  This method is good for hair that is at least 1/2 inch long and not chemically treated.  It consists of washing the hair with an all natural shampoo, applying a leave in rinse or conditioner and comb coiling the hair in pencil-sized sections with a light gel free of alchohol or debris attracting ingredients.
Two Strand Twists - This method is good for hair that is chemical free.  The hair is washed and conditoned, parted and into sections and two-strand twisted.
Braids- Locs may also be started with braids.  The hair is braided into individual braids with or w/o extension.  Between visits, the scalp may be cleaned with cotton balls and Sea Breeze between washings.  The hair will begin to loc over time depending on your hair type.  Once the new growth is locked, the braids may be cut off  (if extensions were added) and the braid itself may be maintained as a loc by retwisting or Latching.
Loc Maintenance
Re-twist - Once you start your locs, you may want to wait at least 1 month before a good wash.  This is to try to establish the twists so that when the hair is washed, the twists will at least keep their form.  Until then, use Cotton Balls and Sea Breeze to clean the scalp and use a light oil on the scalp to keep down the itching.

Palm Rolling - This is another way of twisting the locs but by using the palms of the hands instead.  The coils are placed in between the palms and rolled in one direction.  This method is good because it brings any stray hairs into the lock that may be lingering around outside the coil.

Latching - This method is done with a Latch hook from any craft store.
This method of maintenance is used to avoid over twisting and weakening the base of the locs.
Loc Care
Never put anything that contains Petroleum, mineral oil or alcohol on the locs or scalp to avoid scalp conditions and build up.

Sleep in a satin scarf or head wrap to keep cotton or lint out of your locs.

Wash and retighten your hair by using one of the above methods at least once a week once your locs have developed a foundation or budding has taken place.  The latching method is not not required as often.

Spritz your locs dialy with water or add some Essential oil or light oil to the water (shake first) for a pleasant smell if you like.  This keeps the locks from drying out and also helps in the locking process.

Drink Plenty of water daily.

I am offering this info based on my experience with the locking process and helping others to loc so my info may not work for everyone but I thought these suggestions would be helpful.
