Optional vs Alternate

Optional - This is something that can be used (or not used) in addition to normal rules, and generally along with other rules. An example of an optional rule from Maxtech is the "Floating Criticals" rule, pg 19.

Alternate - This is a change to something that was presented before, and as such will never work at least with the rules it is meant to replace. Alternate rules are created to "fix" percieved problems with the game and generally change the feel of the game. Alternate rules are extremely important to make sure all players understand, or else they may make poor decisions that would be wise with the system that was replaced. An example of an alternate rule from Maxtech is "Vehicle Damage From Fire" rule, pg 33, which replaces the older (base) rule that vehicles are destroyed by fire.
