Home in Sarasota: When we think "second home," we mean just that: a home, and not a tourist mecca or investment property. We want a home big enough for relatives and company, a home in a neighborhood where people know our name, a home with roots. We want a quiet street with big sheltering trees where we can leave the car unlocked, and the front door open. We want comfort: not just the physical amenities of a pillow-top mattress, puffy couch, pool big enough to take out the kinks and private backyard, but that intangible feeling of comfort that comes from shedding the stress, relaxing on a level we can't seem to find in our everyday lives. |
Siesta Public Beach (below): We're close to Siesta Key. |
On the other hand, we want our cake and eat it too. Getting away from it all and being in the middle of it all isn't easy in Sarasota. A peaceful neighborhood may be great, but we don't want to stay in it all the time. That means we need everything close and easy to get to. We wouldn't trade the beach and morning jogs on Siesta for anything, but there's a lot more: lunches at Selby Gardens, downtown art walks, concerts, plays, movies, the view from Marina Jack's, dinners on St. Armand's Circle, window shopping at Sax, the best deli in town, golf, cranes and egrets. We're literally only minutes away from most of these things - not minutes as in close to an hour, but minutes as in 5 to 10, driving at 20 to 30 mph, not 50 to 70 while dodging traffic. Actually, sometimes we can watch the cranes and egrets from our front window. |
Sincerely, FMD and Family |
Anyway, that's our conception of "second home." It isn't everybody's - we don't include maid service. But if it's yours, and you'll take care of our books and straw hats, we'd like you to visit. |
