IFR Training - Session 31

December 22, 2003 - Well today was supposed to be a Stage 3 progress check. I was scheduled to fly with Chris. I have not flown with him and was nervous to say the least, progress check and new CFII.

The plan for today was the ILS30 at KLVN (own nav) and then the GPS28R or GPS28L. Well lets start with what went right.....Start-up and Taxi, and ..... oh wait, that's about all that went right.

Now let's see what went wrong:
1. run-up
2. navigation-after arriving at the FGT VOR.

During the runup I set the radio deck, with one slight but very huge mistake. I had the VOR freq. dialed into the NAV1. I got to the VOR no problem, and tracked outbound once there to intercept the inbound course and then perform the procedure turn. The procedure turn was fine, but when I turned inbound I started tracking 294 inbound, but it was to the VOR, OOPS. I continued tracking the radial fine, but this was not a VOR approach, but an ILS.

Once we picked up the Outer Marker, I started my descent. Chris asked what I was using for vertical guidance and I mentioned the Glideslope. It appeared to be pegged and I thought I was getting lucky. I did not even see the indicator on the gauge that would have shown there was no reception. Plenty of clues, but for many reason I missed them all. I have plenty of work to do but will get back at it. It looked like a waste of time, but it showed me not to rely on on the CFII for too much. It is apparent that I have.

Things To Remember:
1. Take your time.
2. Be thorough.
3. Wake Up and Fly Right.
4. Don't worry too much, everyone makes mistakes, just be sure that you learn from what happened and do your best not to let it happen again.
