Crank cover removed
Local experts work on engine
Barn fresh engine
This view shows the crank guard with brass ID tag identifiying it as a 4 1/2 Hp and giving the working speed as 425 RPM. For some reason early serial number 4 1/2s were designated 425 RPM & later serial numbers were 450 RPM.
Shown here with crank guard removed . The oiler on the left oils the timing gear. This engine is designed to use an external  high tension coil and is hit & miss governed.
    Wayne Hansens' Type 1 Massey
This engine was found still in the barn where it was last used many years ago. It was in excellent shape and needed very little coaxing to run again.
The type 1s were physically large engines for their horsepower. Because this engine had never been outside much there was still a lot of original paint left on it.The main engine was red & the flywheels were green.( you can even see some of the lettering on the hopper). For this reason Wayne opted to leave it original & just clean it up a little. Good choice Wayne.

Always eager to help start an engine that hasn't run for decades club members clean the mixer  & ignition system in preparation to start-up.
In this photo Jim Wells & Kevin Davis tinker while Tim & Kevin Wells look on.This big engine started easily and built compression quickly. It must have been kept well oiled & greased as it shows very little wear  and now has as much compression as a new engine.
The Type 1 Massey-Harris engines  were the earlier models and are much less common than the later Type 2s.
  They are characterised
by the funnel shape on the hopper and unusual valve / rocker arm set-up.
