Notes for GEORGE E SCHWAB: OBITUARY GEORGE E. SCHWAB DOCUMENT #:001 Document: Forest Republican (Newspaper) Vol. 71, No. 14 Wed. June 22, 1938 Tionesta, Pa. DOCUMENT LOCATION: Tionesta Public Library, Tionesta , Pa. 16353 DATE SEARCHED: Copy of article in David Kern Tucker's Possession 30 March 1988. CONDITION: Good Condition OBITUARY George E. Swab George E. Swab, aged 95 years, one of Forest County's two surviving Civil War veterans, died at his home in Tionesta at 9:30 o'clock, Saturday, June 18, 1938. Mr. Swab, a member of the "West Clarion Guards," of Civil War fame, had been in failing health for the past three years, but had been able to be around his home until about two weeks ago, when he was confined to bed. Mr. Swab was a son of Joseph and Mary Swab and was born near Fryburg, Clarion County, Feb. 12, 1843. He moved to Venango County with his parents in 1855, following which the family moved to Forest County in 1890, where for many years he owned and managed a farm at Hunter Station, on the Allegheny River. He moved to Tionesta in 1920, which had since been his home. When the Civil War broke out Mr. Swab enlisted as a private in Company G, 155th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, known as the Pennsylvania Zouaves. With his company and regiment he was engaged in the battles of Gettysbury, Chickamauga and Antietam. He was wounded in the wrist in the battle of Gettysbury and remembered facts about that battle very distinctly until only a short time ago. He spoke of one of the thrilling moments of that battle when he saw the Pennsylvania Bucktail Regiment march by the location of his regiment in preparing to drive out Confederate sharpshooters who were picking off their soldiers. Mr. Swab often recalled having seen General Ulysses S. Grant return General Robert E. Lee's sword at the surrender of the famous Confederate general. Mr. Swab assisted in stacking the arms surrendered by the Confederate soldiers. Mr. Swab's company met at Blair's Corners, Clarion County, on August 14, 1862, and proceeded by wagons to Kittanning via Callensburg and Rimersburg, reaching Kittanning that same night. The company went into camp at Camp Copeland and was mustered into the U.S. service on August 28, 1862. After a number of assignments, the 155th Regiment, of which Mr. Swab was a member and whose movements he often recounted, was advanced to Antietam. After being engaged in the battle of Fredericksburg the company went into desperate fighting at Gettsburg on July 2, the battle in which Mr. Swab was wounded in the wrist. Mr. Swab often spoke of President Lincoln and told of the president's high esteem for his soldiers and his concern for their welfare and that of their families. Mr. Swab was of the opinion that it was an honor to fight for a man like Lincoln. He was honorably discharged from the Union Army on June 2, 1865. While the Capt. George Stow Post, G.A.R. had its organization in Tionesta, Mr. Swab was one of its active members. He attended the Methodist Episcopal church in Tionesta. He had a wide circle of friends in all walks of life who held him in the highest esteem as a good citizen and friend. Mr. Swab is survived by his wife who was formerly Miss Thora Bech. Surviving also are three children of ten born of a former marriage. Mrs. Sarah Lindsey, of Williamsport; Oliver E. Swab, of Franklin; and Mrs. Judd Carter of Polk. There are also 37 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and eight great, great grandchildren surviving. Military funeral services in his memory were held at 2:30 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon in the Tionesta M.E. Church with the pastor, Rev. C.L. Hayes officiating, assisted by a grandson Rev. L.J. Lindsey, pastor of the First Free Methodist Church of Oil City. There was a large attendance of friends and relatives and many beautiful floral tributes. A quartet composed of Mrs. R.R. Philp, Mrs. Howard Fox and Dr. F.J. Bovard, of Tionesta, and L.E. Fitzgerald, of West Hickory, with Miss Iva Daniels at the piano, sang "Rock of Ages," "Nearer My God, To Thee," and "Jesus Lover of My Soul." The flag draped casket had a guard of honor stationed at the head and foot, Larry Maze, of West Hickory and Ott Highfield, of Endeavor. A detail of World War veterans, members of Gus E. Warden Post, American Legion, of Endeavor, and Cleo Bargarstock Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Tionesta, gave full military honors to Mr. Swab, these being Byron Andeson and F.S. Ellis, Color bearers, W.F. Swanson, chaplain, Marvin Alcock, Glenn Klinestiver, Miller G. Keeley, Miner B. Keeley, Arthur Mealy, Ott Highfield and Larry Maze, under command of Captain F.L. Cropp. The firing squad was comprised of Arthur Mealy, Miner B. Keeley, Glenn Klinestiver, Larry Maze, Marvin Alcock, Ott Highfield and Miller G. Keeley.
