Organizations that
Support Flying

There are several organizations that promote flying for teens. This page will tell you about what groups you can get involved with to find others your age interested in flying.

One of the best organizations where youths can gain knowledge in flying is the Civil Air Patrol. This is a program that teaches youths about leadership, aviation, emergency services, and more in a military environment. Most of the activities in Civil Air Patrol are at very reasonable prices, including flight time and instruction.

Another group is the EAA, the Experimental Aircraft Association. The EAA is the largest association for recreational aviation. They have many excellent programs, overviewed on this page.

Civil Air Patrol

The Civil Air Patrol is the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The Cadet Program is open to all youth ages 12-20. The main mission of Civil Air Patrol is to "develop dynamic Americans and aerospace leaders." CAP provides training in a military environment.

Civil Air Patrol is an excellent resource for flying if you are willing to work for it. CAP offers 10-day long flight academies for both powered and gliders. These academies are for more advanced cadets and cost under $1,000, which is not much when compared to how much the same instruction costs through a private school. CAP also gets many exclusive opportunities for tours, etc. with the Air Force and at airshows and other activities.

CAP is a great place to learn about military careers and is an excellent stepping stone to the military.

EAA

The EAA offers several youth programs. There is the Young Eagles program, which offers free flights in private airplanes. The EAA keeps a logbook of all the Young Eagles that have been flown, and, just recently, the 1 millionth young eagle was flown. Click the Young Eagles logo to go directly to the Young Eagles homepage.

The EAA also offers air academies. These are summer programs with different levels for people with different levels of experience. They offer workshops, simulators, flight experience, and more. These air academies have been running longer than any other similar program. Click the logos for more information.
