Learning to Fly

Learning to fly is probably one of the most enjoyable ways to get involved in aviation. This page willl tell you about your many options in learning to fly.

Before you start taking lessons, you have to figure out a few things. You have to decide how much time you have to dedicate to lessons and how much money you are willing to spend on lessons. What you want to do with flying will also determine the kind of lessons that you want to take.

If you have the money and want to be able to schedule lessons around your schedule, a flight school is probably the way to go.

Another way to get involved with flying is with gliders or sailplanes. This can be cheaper because it requires less time and the aircraft are simpler. There is a disadvantage though, and that is that there are less glider schools than powered, so you might have to go farther to find a school.

Flight Schools

Flying lessons at a local flight school are probably one of the more convenient ways to get a license. However, this can be rather expensive. To get a license for powered aircraft requires at least 40 hours of flight time. The minimum age is 16 for a solo certificate, which means you can fly by yourself, and 17 for a Private Pilot's certificate, allowing you to fly with passengers. For somebody with little to no experience, the average cost to obtain a license can run anywhere between $4,000 and $6,000. This includes ground school, a flight instructor, and rental of the airplane.

Gliders and Sailplanes

Starting flying in gliders can have many advantages. First, because gliders don't have engines, they are much simpler to learn than airplanes with engines. This means that students can solo faster than in powered airplanes. The average cost to solo from having no experience is about $3,000. Gliders are a good place to start for younger aviators; the minimum age to solo in a glider is 14, and a private pilot's certificate can be obtained at 16. Some glider schools will offer week-long courses that can take somebody with no experience to a solo, or somebody with solo to private pilot.
