| 17.4.01 Last year we organised a live outdoor music festival in Barnsley's town center [Mandela Gardens opp. Regents Park nughtclub] to showcase local bands and talent. The main event took place on an outdoor stage with an 8k rig and lasted from 11.am until 6pm, where various local bands and soloists entertained a crowd of 3-400 people in lovely sunshine. Then that evening Chunky split into 4 local venues where the music fragmented into variuos styles...pop, folk, hard rock and deejays. The day was quite a success, to say it was a first for Barnsley. The locals had an audio assault of original players... quite a change to the usual 'club turns' doin Gena-fkin-G and Pricky Martin. Anyway...we get to do it all again this year, although with a lot less cash. Last year we had the full monitary support from Barnsley Council's Arts Developement department, but this year due to cutbacks we've only got so much cash. [any donations welcome] So the headliner might be cheap but our main aim is to promote Barnsley's live music scene, which has been booming recently as our student/alternative population rises. This year we also aim to include an extra day of venue gigs so we can spread the variety of music Barnsley has to offer. This means that Friday night will exploit the heavier side of our music scene, with new metal, punk, thrash and anything painfully loud and dirty. Then on the Saturday 12-8pm the Chunky stage will have the more pop/ accessable kind of music that entertains and is still alternative and original. There is hope to get a couple of signed headlining bands to finish the outdoor side of Chunky, then back to various venues for the best late night bands in many styles, from accoustic folk to ruffneck Drum and Bass. If there are any survivors, Sunday will be the post chunky chill with Jazz and ambient events happening in what's left of the rubble of our lil' town. |
